*Note: Some people say the comma before “and” is not required, but it is preferred in traditional academic writing. The comma helps to prevent misunderstandings.
For example, look at the two sentences below. They have different meanings.
A. I want to thank my parents, the Pope, and Mother Teresa. [pic] [pic] [pic]
This sentence means I want to thank
three different groups of people:
1. I want to thank my parents, and
2. I want to thank the Pope, and
3. I want to thank Mother Teresa.
B. I want to thank my parents, the Pope and Mother Teresa.
This sentence means I want to thank one group of people:
I want to thank my parents. My parents are the Pope and Mother Teresa.
[pic] [pic]
[pic][pic]
3. If you use the words “for example” in the middle of your sentence, use commas before and after them.
Example:
[pic] I put many ingredients in my salsa, for example, tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic, cilantro, and salt.

He puts just a few ingredients in his omelets. For example, he puts in eggs, butter, and a little milk.
