Nouns

Grades: 1-4

I. National Standards:

NL-ENG.K-12.12 - Students use spoken, written, and visual language to

accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the

exchange of information).

NT.K-12.4 - Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate

information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.

II. Essential Questions:

1. What is a noun?

2. How can I recognize a noun in a sentence?

3. How can I write sentences using nouns?

4. How can I use technology to present my information about nouns?

III. Assess Prior Knowledge: (10 mins.)

A. Pass out note cards and ask students to write at least one word that is a noun.

B. Take up the cards and read them to the class. Ask students to raise their hands when they hear a word that is a noun.

C. Write a sentence on the board, and ask a volunteer to underline the noun.

IV. Instruction: (20 mins.)

A. Content to be presented:

1. A noun is a person, place, thing or concept (e.g. love).

2. Usually the subject of a sentence is a noun.

3. There are two types of nouns: common and proper.

B. Use a graphic organizer called a cluster (web) to classify the common and proper nouns students give you during the discussion. Write them on the board or the overhead projector so they can see the cluster.

C. Closure: Give the note cards back to the students. Ask them if the word they wrote was a noun. Have them write a sentence on the card using at least one noun. They must circle the noun when they are finished.

D. Assessment: Pass out Listening Center Activity. Tell students they will listen to a song and write down the nouns they hear in the mouth of the character on the page. Play “The Low Down Noun Eater.”

V. Activities and Assessment:

A. Nouns Scavenger Hunt:

1. Put the students in groups.

2. Give a prize to the students who find and write down 20 nouns first.

3. Technology option: The students will use digital cameras to do picture scavenger hunts of nouns in the classroom or on campus.

B. Nouns Collage:

1. The student will cut pictures of nouns out of magazines and paste them onto construction paper or poster board.

2. Technology option: The student will use Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop to create a digital collage.

C. ABC Book:

1. The student will make a book with 26 pages. Each page will feature a picture of a particular noun for each letter of the alphabet. The student will also include a sentence that uses the noun.

2. Technology option: The student will use Microsoft Power Point to create an alphabetical slide show of creative nouns and pictures.

D. Acronym

1. The student will write the word “noun” vertically on his/her paper.

2. The student will write four nouns horizontally that begin with the letters n, o, u and n.

3. Technology option: The student will use a word processor (e.g. Microsoft Word) to complete the assignment.
