Pre-lesson assignment and/or prior knowledge: At this age, students understand that words are needed throughout their writing to make it more descriptive and expressive. Students may understand why adjectives are used but they may not know why they are placed where they are throughout a sentence.

Lesson Beginning: Before the lesson begins, the students will be given an example sentence that includes adjectives in it. The students will be asked to point out which words throughout the sentence are adjectives and why they are needed in any given sentence. “Edgewood Elementary School is an adorable school found in the pretty and small town or Yardley, Pennsylvania.” After the students identify the adjectives placed in this sentence, the teacher will ask the class to imagine what the world would be like if there were no such thing as adjectives. “How would someone be able to describe something? Would it be boring?”

Instructional Plan:

● Formally explain what an adjective is and identify when in a sentence they are found.

○ Refer back to the initial sentence given to the class to underline the adjective and circle what it comes before

■ An adjective is a word that modifies, or describes a noun or pronoun

● The teacher will mention that she knows the students have been learning about different kinds of dinosaurs and what each of them were like when they lived years ago.

● The teacher will ask if the students know what kind of scientist study fossils and dinosaurs: a paleontologist. The teacher will further explain that paleontologists need to be able to describe every detail of what they find in order to help classify different types of dinosaurs. If adjectives were not used, they would not be able to differentiate different fossils they find by word or in their writings.

● The book Dinosaurs Galore by Giles Andreae will be introduced to the class and the students will be called to the carpet. The students will be instructed to pay close attention to the adjectives they hear throughout the story as they will be gone over after the introduction of each dinosaur mentioned during the story.

● After each dinosaur is introduced, the story will pause and its name will be written on newsprint. The students will be asked to list the adjectives that were used on the page that the author used to describe the character. After they have all been written down, they will be asked to provide a few more of their own adjectives that could be used to describe that particular character.

● At the end of the read aloud, the teacher will describe the activity the students will be doing to practice their use of adjectives when describing characters in a story.

● Three options of dinosaur outlines will be given for the students to create their own dinosaur. The new dinosaur’s name, along with the student’s name, will be placed at the top of the page before they may begin writing.

● The students will write 4 to 5 sentences about their newly created dinosaur using adjectives to thoroughly describe what it is like. All adjectives written throughout their dinosaur’s description must be underlined to show that they know which words are known as adjectives.

● When all sentences are completed, the students must read them to one of the adults found in the room. At this time, using the students’ descriptions of their dinosaur, they will color around the outlined picture a scene that their dinosaur would be found in.

Differentiation:

● Students will collaborate in pairs and small groups. This will permit students to engage in meaningful discussions and to observe and learn from one another.

● Speak at a slower rate and use basic terms when describing the lesson for the limited English proficiency students.

Questions:

● What can adjectives tell us as we read stories?

● Why do authors need to make sure they use adjectives when describing their characters?

● Why is it necessary to use adjectives in our writing?

Classroom Management:

● The teacher will circulate the classroom while the students are working, checking their progress along the way.

● Students will be attentive during open class discussions.

● Students will use inside voices while working in groups.

Transitions:

● Students will be called to the carpet based their shirt color (colors are adjectives).

● Adjectives will be written on the newsprint about each of the dinosaurs described in the book at the end of each page when the teacher asks the students, “What adjectives did the author use to describe the _____?”

● Looking at all the adjectives hanging on the newsprint, the teacher will introduce the activity and inform the students that they will be using adjectives like these to describe their own dinosaurs.

● Students will be sent back to their seats by groups where there will be three options of dinosaur worksheets for them to choose from.

Closure: Once all students (time to move on to next lesson) finish their dinosaur descriptions and colorings, volunteers will be asked to read the class what they have written and show their picture and underlined adjectives by placing it under the document camera.
