Federal Agencies
Federal Agencies with EMS Responsibilities
Providing Federal leadership for a comprehensive national EMS system surpasses the expertise and funding of any single department — and requires a strong coordinated approach among Federal agencies. Many Federal agencies rely on EMS to fulfill their missions:

Preparedness
Preparedness requires a coordinated national effort involving every level of government, as well as the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and individual systems. As frontline providers of emergency medical care, EMS systems are an important component of national preparedness.
Lessons Learned Information Sharing
NEMSIS
The National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) will provide the framework for collecting, storing, and sharing standardized EMS data from States nationwide. The new NEMSIS database, to be housed at NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis, will empower EMS stakeholders at the local, State, and national levels with the information necessary to accurately assess EMS needs and performance today — and strategically plan for tomorrow.

About NHTSA EMS section & subsection
Overview
NHTSA and EMS share a 40+ year history. In fact, our Nation’s emergency medical services system was developed under NHTSA’s predecessor agency. As a result of this shared history, NHTSA has long been the de facto lead coordinating agency on EMS issues within the Federal government.
