Integers and Coordinate Plane

Integers and Coordinate Plane

Study Guide

1. The Number Line

Integers

All whole numbers both positive and negative

Opposites

Two numbers that share the same absolute value but are on the opposite sides of zero.

Ex. -5, 5

Absolute Value

A numbers distance from 0

*Because it is measuring distance, absolute value is always positive!!!

Inequality

A mathematical term for comparing two quantities using , or =

Students should be able to….

• write integers for real world situations

• graph integers and their opposites

• show a numbers absolute value

• write or solve inequalities using integers

• recognize a numbers position on the number line in relation to other numbers (Must know left and right directions!!!)

• be able to order both positive and negative numbers from least to greatest

**If a number is to the left of a number on the number line, it is less than the other

number. If it is to the right then it is greater than that number.

2. The Coordinate Plane

x-axis

the line that runs horizontally from left to right

y-axis

the line that runs vertically from top to bottom

origin

the point where the x and y-axis intersect

ordered pair

two coordinates that tell you the location of a point.

Ex. (2, 6) *first # is the x-axis, second # is the y-axis

quadrants

The four regions created by the intersection of the x- and y-axes

Students should be able to….

• graph and locate points using ordered pairs

• know which quadrant a point will lie in according to the signs of its coordinates (ex. (-7, 6) would lie in quadrant II )

• reflect points across the x- and y- axes and determine the ordered pair for a reflection according to the quadrant in which it would lie

• calculate distance between two points in a vertical or horizontal line

Students should use their notes in their math composition book as well as homework assignments and assignments in the OnCore workbook to study.
