Summer Workcamps 2006
Dear friends,
With our 2006 workcamp program ijgd welcomes you to send volunteers to our international workcamps. We offer a wide choice of projects in which volunteers can engage themselves in meaningful work, as well as play an active role in the decision making of day-to-day group life.
Background and Goals
IJGD is a non-profit, non-denominational organization which has been active in international youth work since 1948. Each year ijgd ganizes about 110 international youth workcamps. In cooperation with partner workcamp organizations, ijgd also sends volunteers to workcamps in Europe, Africa and North and South America.
Ijgd aims to encourage young people to become aware of existing social and environmental conditions, enabling them to be active and responsible participants in a democratic society. The experiential learning in a workcamp leads to an examination of one's own cultural norms and values and consequently helps to break down barriers between people because of their cultural, social and racial differences. This development of international understanding is regarded as a contribution to the furtherance of world peace.
IJGD General Camp Conditions
• Generally each workcamp lasts about 3 weeks
• Participants are generally between 16 to 26 years
• Generally volunteers work about 5 hours/day, except Saturday and Sunday (25 to 30 hours a week)
• Most groups consist of about 15 volunteers
• Participants are expected to contribute to the daily life of the group in many ways (cooking, shopping, organizing free-time activities; the running of the whole event)
• Accommodations are generally simple (youth hostels, schools, forest huts or sometimes tents)
• Groups are usually responsible for cooking their own meals
• Projects may include renovation, environmental work, play schemes with children, work with elderly, etc.
Group Leaders
Group Leaders of IJGD workcamps are usually similar in age to other participants. Workcamps usually have two leaders, trained through IJGD seminars, who work together as a leader team. Camps are run using the principle of self-organization. This means that the leaders should not dominate, rather be participants themselves who are also responsible for contact with the project's supporter, taking care of administrative details and ensuring self-organization of the group.
After the Workcamps In autumn, after the workcamp season is over, ijgd organizes evaluation meetings with former participants, with group leaders and staff on a national and international level.

Your exhausting working day ends with a refreshing swim in the North Sea. Afterwards, you bask in the sun and proudly look at the beach: together with your fellow volunteers, you have again saved a good part of those dunes from erosion by wind and waves! If you like the idea of helping to preserve the dune landscape of this eastern-most East Frisian island, you have come to the right workcamp. Wangerooge has several nature reserves and bird and is a car-free zone. IJGD groups have worked in coastal and duneland protection on this North Sea island for over 50 years. W: Your international group will erect sand-retaining fences, plant mar ram grass and repair footpaths in the dunes. All these jobs prevent erosion of the dunes by wind and water, and are part of the island’s 3 sea defences. The dunes are a nature reserve and offer a habitat for coastal animal and plant life. This is a project for people who love the sea, the beach, the sun and the wind. Practical island protection work aside, you will have the opportunity to learn about the unique mud-flats habitat and take part in excursions to get to know this area. IJGD 6314 Kronach (BY) 14/04 – 30/04 ART/CONS 12V
Kronach is in Bavaria, in an area known as the Green Crown in the heart of Germany. It is a town of late mediaeval character with an historical centre and the unconquered Castle Rosenberg. For Kronach, 2006 is the “Year of Johann Kaspar Zeuß”, one of the town’s most famous sons. In his honour, the town plans to construct a trail which will feature wooden markers to commemorate the work and achievements of this “founder of Celtic philology”. This is where your help is required. W: The wooden markers are being created as part of an international art project and during this work camp you will have the opportunity to make one of them to your own design. There will be about 30 markers in total and locations have to be selected and prepared. One of your tasks will be to dig suitable holes and fix the wooden markers in place. We would also like your help with renovating a barn next-door to your accommodation, so that it can be used in connection with our youth work projects. In your free time, you might want to visit Bayreuth, Coburg and Bamberg (good public transport connections). A: In the comfortable “Struwwelpeter Youth Centre” in Kronach, cooking done by the group. The Weissenfels museum Association offers activity projects for school kids which are based upon sensory perception: SIGHT, SOUND, TOUCH, SMELL and TASTE. W: We would like your help in creating an additional project for local children and young people, namely a colour tunnel to help sharpen the senses. This will become a part of the existing collection of sensory objects such as Feeling Hand, Fairytale Wall, Smelling Snout and Sounds of Life, all of which will be installed in the Sensory Park and used by schools as part of their curriculum. We rely on you for imagination, determination and action! In addition there will be a theatre workshop shared with kids from a childrens home, and a joint performance will mark the end of the workshop. Weissenfels has an interesting history for you to explore and offers you the opportunity to meet great people and have lots of fun. A: In tents on site. IJGD 6414 Osterwieck ST 24/06 – 15/07 KIDS 15 V
In Osterwieck, a small town of half-timbered houses in the Harz mountains foreland W: you will have the opportunity to work with children and young people. Your work includes playing games, drawing, sketching and other forms of creative work as well as dance and music. You will show German children what your home countries’ culture is like, thereby paying special attention to the needs of different age groups. Work will be carried out in municipal institutions such as a kinder garden and a day nursery for children aged 1-10. If you want to work with young people who attend High School (“Gymnasium”) you will have to prepare for a multi-cultural theatre-, dance or music project. You will rehearse your show with the young people during the optional afternoon classes and will stage it at the end of the camp. Bring your own ideas for the projects, including material and precise ideas. The project is organized by the Catholic church, your accommodation will be in the local parish hall.

IJGD 6228 Hoisdorf (SH) 01/07 – 19/07 CONS 20V
Some 25 km from Hamburg, within the region known as the “Stormarnische Schweiz” (“Stormarn’s Switzerland” – Stormarn being the local district), is the little town of Hoisdorf. The Lichtensee Youth and Leisure Centre occupies an idyllic location between forest and lake, and your help is required with renovating and extending the Centre’s playground. W: An adventure ship for children is waiting to be built, but before you can get started on this, preparatory earthworks have to be carried out. The ship itself will be made from wood, and a lot of the work will take place outdoors and can be physically demanding. You will have the use of bicycles to explore the beautiful countryside. The city of Hamburg is within easy reach by public transport, and at weekends you might like to take a trip to the North Sea or the Baltic. A: In the Youth and Leisure Centre, in shared rooms. "Time to make friends™" is the official motto of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™. The UNESCO World Youth Festival will see Stuttgart playing host to the world. This festival is a programme which promotes encounters between young people, its main focus being a sporting and cultural exchange of ideas. With the lsupport of a number of the region's cities, districts, organisations, clubs and businesses, a symbolic number of 2006 young people from all over the world will be invited to the Stuttgart area during the World Cup. From 02/07 to 19/07 2006 they will be the guests of Stuttgart and the surrounding region. We would like to invite you to be part of this Festival and help to encourage interaction between the different nationalities, languages and culture – the overall aim of course is to forge a great many international friendships. W: After the Festival, we would like you to help renovate two children’s and young people’s centres in the north of Stuttgart. This will include mosaic and natural stone work in the grounds of one of the centres, as well as remodelling the gardens of another. This work is physically demanding but also needs your creative input. All in all, these three weeks offer a great deal of variety and your input, imagination and ideas are very welcome. You’ll have complimentary tickets for all local public transport so that you can visit the numerous local museums, castles, parks, thermal baths and swimming pools, or hike across the vineyards by the river Neckar. IJGD 6101 Berlin-Köpenick (BLN) 08/07 – 29/07 MENT 12V
In the Köpenick district on the outskirts of Berlin, within close proximity to two rivers, lakes and extensive forests, is a home for mentally handicapped people run by the “Sozialstiftung Köpenick”.W: Your main task will be to organise and run a summer fete together with the residents. We would hope that the preparation of decorations, games, entertainment (for example, music and theatre) and food would mirror the varied cultural backgrounds of the participants. Other tasks are the creation of a herb and vegetable bed for each of the groups living in the home, and take day trips with the residents. Most of the residents work in workshops until early afternoon and you will need to be flexible in arranging your working time and be prepared to work in the afternoons. At Humboldstraße, the municipal cemetery in the north of Berlin, W: you will help with the restoration of the graves of war victims. This will include the removal of old grave borders and the cleaning of gravestones. Moreover, you will put in frames for new grave borders and sow grass. The war victims are German and non-German soldiers and civilians and the cemetery has been set up especially for them. A: in a youth guest house nearby, cooking done by the group. Kaufering has prepared many interesting tasks for this year’s workcamp: W: To a large part you will work in the forest and amongst other things - clear paths, replanting or clearing wild areas, pruning young trees and other “wood” work. In addition your help is required in repairing the local youth club. Kaufering is a nice little town in Upper Bavaria - trips are possible to Munich and Augsburg. IJGD 6308 Stuttgart FORST (BW) 08/07 – 29/07 ENVI 13V
Stuttgart is the capital of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg and for many years has marketed itself as “Stuttgart – city amongst forests and grapevines”. One of the most beautiful local forests is the “Rotwildpark”, the deer park in the western part of the city and some 4 square km in size. The Rotwildpark with its profusion of ancient oaks and beech trees of strange and impressive shapes has been a nature reserve since 1939. W: Unfortunately, non-indigenous plants started to become a problem some years ago and this work camp’s main task is to help halt their spread, especially that of the Indian balsam (impatiens glandulifera). As this is only possible with the help of many willing hands, both the Stuttgart Council’s Countryside Conservation Department and the local forestry commission are very much looking forward to your contribution. A: In a comfortable cabin idyllically located in the middle of the Rotwildpark and yet only 10 km from Stuttgart city centre, cooking done by the group. This work camp takes place in the centre of the Black Forest – in co-operation with the Triberg forestry office, W: your tasks are all to do with forest and environmental conservation. They include: clearing trees from high pastures, maintaining waterways and wild meadows, and building an observation platform or two… You’ll be working with forestry professionals who will be happy to share their knowledge of the forest environment. The area has been preserved as a cultural monument to the achievements, work and ingenuity of the Upper Harz mining community over the past centuries, and is maintained and run by the local waterworks authority. W: Your help is required with the restoration of moats and the excavation and repair of bankside walls, and we would like you to carry out some carpentry work on bridge supports. In addition, there is nature conservancy work to be done around the reservoirs. All this is physically demanding, so please make sure you are fit and well! The old village school in Schweicheln was built in 1847 and, since its renovation in 2001, is run as a school museum (museumsschule.de) by the local Museums Association In 2004 W: The Museums Association acquired and restored the 200 year old farm labourers’ cottage opposite the school, to provide an insight into children’s homelife. Under expert tutelage, one of your tasks will be to lay the earthen floor in the cottage, which has to be “stamped” to seal it. Using traditional round dances and music from 200 years ago, you’ll be combining work and pleasure like the olden-day builders. A hundred years ago, water for the cottage dwellers was fetched from a spring. We would like you to build a new wall around this spring, lay a pathway, and help with planting a farmers’ garden with a fence to surround it, and clearing and restocking a pond. If the weather is poor, we would like your help with various restoration works indoors, for example laying floor tiles in the school’s attic. The grounds of the Falckenstein Youth Holiday Camp, which served as accommodation for young participants of the 1972 Olympics, are right on the shores of the Kiel Fjord (“Kieler Förde“). Every year, this vast area by the water’s edge is used as a play centre for some 1500 children. W: We would like you to help us with providing day care for the children. Each week has its own theme, for example “Living like Native Americans” or “Magic Worlds”. You’ll be involved in all kinds of activities – playing, making things, fancy dress and many more. If you love working with kids, are keen to gain working experience in this field and enjoy the seaside, you’ll have a fantastic four weeks. The first week gives you time to get to know each other, take a look around Kiel and become familiar with the holiday camp. The “Glashütte“ Cultural Centre for Children and Young People in the Porz district of Cologne needs your help with a variety of tasks, including the renovation of a beach volleyball court in the Centre’s grounds. W: This involves laying foundations and renovating and cleaning the entire court area. We would also like you to help with turning one of the Centre’s rooms into a Black Light Theatre. Ceiling and walls are to be painted black, windows blacked out and black lights to be installed. You might also be able to develop displays for the Black Light room – any ideas you have will be supported if at all possible – and create wooden markers saying “Please Touch” which are to be displayed indoors. The Centre will be in use throughout your stay, giving you the opportunity to spend time with lots of young people from Cologne and make new friends. The health resort of Monschau with its picturesque half-timbered houses is beautifully located right outside the “Hohes Venn” Nature Reserve, on the Belgian border. In co-operation with Aachen District Council, the Biological Department and the Sielmann Rangers, W: we would like you to tackle a number of environmental and nature conservation tasks within the nearby “Fuhrts- und Perlenbachtal” area. This includes restoring a fishpond to its former glory, clearing streambeds, removing unwanted young fir trees and tending neglected grasslands. All these are part of the special measures designed to provide protection for endangered habitats (NATURA 2000/EU-FFH-Gebiete) of animals and plants in the Eifel region. Some of the tasks will be physically demanding. If interested, you can learn a great deal about nature conservancy work and, if you like, Aachen District Council will arrange visits to the local facilities for the 2006 World Riding Championships and an excursion to the grottos and mines of Valkenburg. Oberursel is a picturesque town in the Taunus, a heavily wooded region near Frankfurt.W: Your first task is to help the local forestry office with its environmental protection work, to include the removal of undergrowth and maintenance work in the “Stadtwald”, the forest part of town. Your help is also needed with an area known as the “green classroom”, part of the town’s “Schulwald” or “forest school”. There, the tunnel of a “gold and silver mine” requires alterations, a number of benches for kids are to be constructed and a sensory trail is to be extended. Your second task involves helping the Kaleidoscope Association with their holiday play scheme “Environmental Adventures in the Forest School” for children aged 6 to 13. This takes place on 1 or 2 days per week and involves working with the children and local staff to prepare and run a forest rally. Your ideas for other games involving “forest” and “environment” will be most welcome and all your own initiatives will be supported wherever possible. W: Your task is to work in the beautiful Sanssouci gardens, which will give you the opportunity to gain a rare insight into this specialist working environment. The Charlottenhof Park, designed by P.J. Lenné in 1838, is one of the areas where you’ll help with the maintenance of paths, flowerbeds and lawns, all of which is an important part of the conservation effort. This work camp is all about the Celts: burial sites revealed that the area had been settled by the Celts since before the time of Christ. W: This is why in 2003 an ijgd group started work on the reconstruction of a Celtic house. Your task will be to construct a storage hut built on wooden poles and other work including the extension of fencing made of natural materials, and continuing with site works. Wachtendonk is located on the lower Rhine, in the northern part of the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park near the Dutch border. The countryside is stunning, with vast forests, fields and meadows and idyllic waterways, and the town’s picturesque centre is a conservation area. This camp is for people who enjoy nature, are happy to work outdoors and are not afraid of hard physical labour. W: Your task will be to reconstruct an old hiking trail, about 300 metres long, along the river “Nette”, in co-operation with staff from the Council Depot. To begin with, the old surface needs to be broken up with pneumatic hammers and the debris removed from the site. Next, the trail has to be shored up and a new surface constructed with gravel and mineral compounds, and the border areas filled with topsoil and laid to lawn. The use of machinery is almost impossible due to the trail’s location. If time permits, you might also be involved with erecting wooden benches along the trail. Free time activities might include a visit to a beautiful lido known as the “Blue Lagoon” some 5 km away, as well as trips to the nearby towns of Kempen and Straelen. Wunsiedel is a district town in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park. W: Your help is required with two projects: one is the restoration of two ancient, listed narrow passes which, in co-operation with the council’s forestry office, need to be restored and integrated into the existing network of circular hiking trails. Your task will be the removal of undergrowth and debris. The second project takes place at the “Katharinenberg”, where new signage is to be placed in a listed park, the “Bürgerpark Katharinenberg”. By the time you arrive, new and topical information boards will have been prepared for the existing countryside learning trail and its integrated forest learning trail, and we would like you to place these around the Katharinenberg area. Minibuses are provided for your use, in your free time you might like to visit Bayreuth, Bamberg and Nuremberg or take a trip across the nearby Czech border to visit the town of Cheb. You should also visit the nearby “Wunsiedeler Felsenlabyrinth”, an amazing rock formation. In the western Taunus region, right next to the beautiful vineyards of the Rheingau, is the spa town of Bad Schwalbach. The local Youth Education Department and foresters from the Bad Schwalbach forestry office have set out a programme of different nature protection tasks for you, which includes the creation of a “Forest Learning Area” for nursery and primary school children. W: You’ll construct a circular trail, a barefoot path and a number of specific activity “stations” - for example a “balancing and musical tree” - and a miniature rope garden. We would also like you to create a wetland habitat and seating facilities for visitors as well as help restore a forest glade, which involves creating a wetland habitat and removing coniferous trees. Your third project is about helping with maintenance work in the “Rosit Slate Quarry Nature Reserve”, more specifically removing undergrowth and overgrown fences and taking out small trees in the water meadows. Another task is the renovation of the local Jewish cemetery and to work in the “Grube Christine” colliery museum in Adorf. In your free time, you can swim in the Diemel reservoir or visit the pretty half-timbered villages of Korbach and Frankenberg. It is planned that during the last week your work will take place on Freising’s famous Domberg Hill. Freising lies in the Isar valley and offers easy access to Munich and the Alps. Gerolstein is a pretty little town in the heart of the volcanic Eifel region, an area renowned for its vast forests, romantic valleys and the distinctive rock formations of its dolomitic hills. The Council and local forestry commission have prepared a number of tasks connected with nature conservation and archaeology, which include maintenance works at the ancient Celtic settlement of Dietzenley and the construction of an observation tower. W: Your help is also required with projects in surrounding villages; for instance, there are earthworks to be carried out in the Millstone Caves in Roth, and sign posts to be replaced on the walking trails around the small community of Birresborn. And there is some creative work to be done in the local school (which is where you’ll stay) including making a large mural. Some 700 disabled people live and work in the “St Nicolai Home” run by the Sundsacker e.V. Association. W: We would like you to work with the residents to help make the home’s pretty grounds even prettier, by building or renovating benches, rest areas and various other creatively designed elements of the gardens. In addition, we would like you to join in with creative activities such as painting, games and maybe making music. You’ll be in contact with the residents throughout your working time, and you’ll have the possibility to extend this contact by joining in with parties and barbecue evenings. For this camp, you’ll need to be interested in and enjoy spending time with disabled people. The “St Nicolai Home” is in a beautiful location on the river Schlei estuary. The south-western region of the Palatinate hugs the ‘green border’ of the Alsace region of France and features an interesting and romantic landscape. Dominated by bizarre sandstone formations (the subject of countless mythical tales) and legendary ruined castles, this area is part of the “Biosphärenreservat Naturpark Pfälzerwald”, a habitat conservation area and nature park which forms Germany’s largest continuous forest area. The Hinterweidenthal forestry office has prepared a variety of conservation and environmental awareness tasks for you, which include the creation of a “green classroom” with covered seating, and seed and humus beds. In addition,W: your help is needed to repair a climbing frame, clear an overgrown mountain-bike trail in the forests near Hinterweidenthal and clear the watercourses in our ecologically sensitive water meadows. In week three, we would like you to create a pathway through the rocky landscape in what will become a wilderness area within the habitat conservation area – this is physically demanding work. And if there is time, you might start building a “Forest Educational Trail”. This trail will be known as the “St Francis Trail” and will be designed to offer visitors a holistic, non-denominational, aesthetically pleasing walking retreat to engage with on all levels – emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. W: We would like you to join students from the Mittenwald Wood Carvers’ College to create 17 “stations” (7 “reading stations” and 10 “art stations”), and to help with general work around the two new architecturally innovative chapels currently being built. This will include placing benches, planting, and creating a “green roof” for the chapels. Some of this work is physically demanding, but we would also like you to be creative: you’ll have the opportunity to use paint and your imagination on this and other playgrounds. The park of Dieskau Palace has been part of the “Gartenträume” (garden dreams) project of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt (gartentraeume-sachsen-anhalt.de) since the year 2000. Forty historical parks are protected from decay and restored following the principles of the preservation of historical monuments in order to make the heritage of garden culture accessible to the public. W: In order to make this possible you will work on gardening and landscaping projects. This includes digging, water tasks, and care of orchards, as Under professional guidance you will trace the course of historic paths and build them anew. Moreover, you gain an insight into the history of horticulture and botany and get to know the “Gartenträume” network. You will document the project in various forms, including photos and reports. If the weather is bad you may support the municipality with construction and restoration work in the palace and elsewhere in Dieskau. For music lovers there is a concert every Sunday. “bat detectors“ from your hosts at the Steinberg Youth Forestry Centre. The Centre, where you will be staying, is comfortably furnished but it is located 500m high up in the forests, far away from “civilisation“. You will need to enjoy living in the wild, and please don’t forget your hiking boots! All this preserves habitats for flora and fauna which only survive in moorland conditions. The work is often physically demanding, but you’ll have unlimited access to fresh air! A different kind of meeting place: last summer, the village of Marklohe started to build a meeting place for young people by turning a large circus wagon and several “Bauwagen“ (a type of temporary accommodation buildings commonly used on construction sites) into a “Wagenburg”, a wagon train circle. W: Your task, in co-operation with young people from the local youth work association “JAM”, is to remodel the grounds (2,500 square metres) and paint the circus wagon – please feel free to let your creativity and imagination run wild! Your help is also required with preparing and running a one-week holiday play scheme for children aged 6 to 14 years, again in co-operation with young people from JAM. We hope you’ll contribute games, recipes, artistic and musical abilities, imagination, and other stimulating and inspiring ideas. Marklohe is an idyllic rural community located between Hanover and Bremen. The village has a variety of shopping facilities, and bicycles are provided so that you can explore the surrounding area. The Marburg-Biedenkopf District Council, local environmental protection organisations and the Burgwald forestry office would like your help with a number of environmental protection tasks in the surrounding areas. W: These include building winter quarters for bats in an old bunker, renovating an environmental information trail near the small town of Lahntal, and carrying out maintenance work in marshlands within the Burgwald Nature Conservation Area. Your help is also needed with a large-scale pastureland project and a variety of maintenance and conservation tasks. You’ll have the opportunity to take part in excursions to learn about different environmental protection projects. Quetzdoelsdorf is a small town between Halle and the Dessau-Wšrlitzer Gartenreich, a man-made landscape of castles, stately homes and gardens, huge parklands and other sites of cultural and historical interest mostly dating back to the 18th century. In 2005, the Land-Life-Art-Craft Association took over one of the castles as a centre for artistic, cultural, ecological and educational programmes. W: Your help is now required to restore the overgrown parklands surrounding this centre to their original English landscape-garden design. With support from local experts, your tasks will include the renovation of moats, bridges, a pond, pathways and grasslands, and the historic kitchen garden, discovered during archaeological digging work, is to be re-instated in the meadow close to the castle. Renovation work is also required in the castle itself, and we´d like you to help build a high rope garden in the trees at the edge of the forest, with lots of opportunities for adventure. You will also have the opportunity to develop your creative side there are facilities for woodcarving, sculpting, pottery, theatre acting, adventure games, painting and photography; in fact, the entire area turns into one big studio/stage. The camp ends with the village fete, and you are invited to contribute in any way you choose, for example, you might like to exhibit your works of art or star in your own theatre production or cook your favourite soup for a hundred people In your free time, you can make use of the bicycle-hire facilities to explore the surrounding area. The picturesque health resort of Stamsried is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the “Bayerischer Wald“, the Bavarian Forest, Central Europe’s largest wooded area known as “Europe’s Green Roof“ and tailor-made for relaxation and recuperation. W: The aim of this work camp is to create a place of power which will enable people to recharge: in the grounds of the baroque Stamsried Castle you’ll construct a geomantic “Self-awareness Trail” whose 18 “stations” will be placed on specific locations with strong earth energy fields. Amongst others, you’ll construct a stone circle made from granite blocks, a lawn labyrinth, two spirals made from cobblestone and an observation hill with a rock garden. You’ll work mostly with natural stone and you’ll be supported by local experts and young people under the supervision of (landscape) architects. In addition, we would like you to participate in a workshop where you can use your creativity and your community spirit: the aim is to create a Celtic Wheel of the Year or Sun Wheel to symbolise intercultural connections. This camp is for people who are happy to live, work and spend most of their free time surrounded by “Mother Nature“ – you must be very much in tune with nature to enjoy this project. The Harz region is a popular holiday destination; there are mountains, caves with stalactites, mining museums, nature reserves and vast forests steeped in legends and fairy tales, all waiting to be explored by you. The forestry team will of course be happy to share their knowledge of nature conservation and their involvement in the environmental protection of the forests. You might read to residents or go for walks with them (on foot or with a wheelchair) and an important part of your day will be caring for individual bedridden residents, maybe you’d sing to them or make music, play games or just talk with them. Alfeld Council is currently running a project called “Into the Centre“, part of which is the environmentally friendly renovation of the historic town gardens. W: A multitude of tasks awaits you: helping to re-establish the alpine rockery and build a jetty in the upper pond, construct a circular bench, and gardening work which will include planting. There is more work to be done on the pond (the “Stiefelsteich”), most importantly maintaining existing and establishing new habitats, shoring up banks in an environmentally sound manner, and build an island for breeding birds. Free time possibilities are equally varied: a swimming pool, a youth centre which offers concerts and performances, museums, boules and sports facilities and, if you want to be brave, you can try tandem hang-gliding. Additional tasks will include painting the perimeter fence, possibly build a shed and help with ongoing grounds maintenance. Bad Windsheim is located at the edge of the „Frankenhöhe“ (Franconian Heights) Nature Park between the cities of Würzburg and Nuremberg. Two exciting tasks await you: firstly, Band Windsheim Council would like you to help with the creation of a forest experience trail. This is part of an ongoing project to extend the local leisure facilities and, under expert tutelage, W: you’ll be involved with the building of two specific parts of this trail, one of which will be a play area. The second project, which was proposed by the local environmental protection group, is about clearing the bed of a local stream called the Kaibach which, in three different places, has been so obstructed by landslides that its flow has been severely disrupted. Barleben is right next-door to Magdeburg, the capital of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. Its surrounding countryside at the edge of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide Nature Reserve is steeped in history. Last year, Barleben started a project called Local Breeds of Domestic Animals which now aims to collect and preserve rural crafts and traditions, both local and from the wider region, and present them in a way that makes them come to life for both visitors from afar and local people. One of the main themes is about old breeds of domestic animals. At the centre of this facility will be a Teaching and Meeting Centre suitable for all kinds of events. W: We would welcome your help with the development of the grounds, the tasks include removing undergrowth and deadwood, restoring hedges and rough stone walls, laying
pathways and the first steps towards the establishment of a planned habitat. In your free time, you can use the Mittellandhalle, a sports hall, opposite your accommodation. On the Swiss border, close to the culturally and artistically aware city of Basel and in Baden-Württemberg’s sunniest corner, is Grenzach-Wyhlen. This year, the town plans to run various projects with a number of partners, all of them along the lines of “Climate and Environmental Protection” and “By and For Young People”. W: We would like you to join local experts in the preparation and running of these projects, which will include working with the local BUND association to create a shallow water zone and habitat on the river Rhine, and help prepare a forest project in the nearby Dinkelberg Nature Reserve. We would also like you get involved with the “Umweltzeltstadt” (“Environmental Tent City”), a 2 week camping holiday with an environmental theme for children aged 8 to 13 years, run by the local Department for Youth who would welcome your help with preparing and running this event. The camping ground also houses the local football association’s clubhouse which is in dire need of renovation, and your help would be appreciated. Finally, there is the local skateboard facility, which needs extending. Grenzach-Wyhlen lies in beautiful countryside and is within easy reach of the Black Forest, the Basler Jura, the Vosges and the Alps. There is ample opportunity for leisure pursuits such as climbing, cycling and hiking, or bathing in the wonderful river Rhine. The “Heiligengrabe“ convent was founded in 1287 and is the only remaining almost perfectly preserved Cistercian convent in the Federal State of Brandenburg. A long-term renovation programme began in 1998, funded by the Federal State, the German Association for the Protection of Historical Monuments and private donations. The convent is still home to a spiritual community of protestant nuns, but also offers training courses and a number of tourist facilities. W: As part of a scheme involving volunteers working in the protection of monuments initiative, renovation work is under way in the grounds of the convent to restore the former distillery and an administrator’s house so that they can be used as a training centre for voluntary organisations. The idea is to make this location attractive to young people, and the project already has several young participants. We would like your help with outdoor work – projects include a stone wall, an orchard, a herb garden and repairing natural stone paths. As if in a fairy tale, your task in this work camp will be to awaken an enchanted castle: Castle Beilstein, located to the east of Kaiserslautern city centre, has almost been reclaimed by the surrounding countryside. W: Staff from the local forestry office will work with you to clear the hiking trails leading to the castle as well as cut back vegetation that has overgrown the castle, and provide new seating facilities. In addition, we would like you to create a “barefoot path” as part of a “forest experience trail”. Then, depending on the time available, there is a vantage point to set up, from which to enjoy spectacular views across Kaiserslautern and its beautiful surroundings which are so typical for the western Palatinate. If you are interested, you’ll have the opportunity to learn lots about the forest and its role as a recreation facility close to the city, and get to know some of its other users, such as the “Kaiserslautern Waldkindergarten”, a children’s nursery in the forest. There is an open-air swimming pool for you to use in your free time, and Saarbrücken, Mannheim and Heidelberg are within easy reach. At the end of this work camp, the forestry office will throw a big party for you at the castle to thank you for all your hard work and to say goodbye in a suitable manner. The grounds of the former slaughterhouse in Naumburg, now a listed building, are being transformed into a Cultural Centre for historic crafts and building materials. You’ll clean old building materials prior to their reuse and you’ll be involved in restoring the perimeter wall. During your third week, we would like you to take part in a number of creative workshops with local young people. You might discover a fascination for the rhythm and power of samba drumming, or you might like to create beautiful objects from all kinds of historical and ecological materials. You could also collect your impressions and express them in a variety of media, and then publish them on the Internet. In 2005, the small town of Syke purchased an area of former military terrain on the Hoher Berg (“High Mountain“) in Ristedt district. A number of remodelling projects have already taken place to help reduce the military character of the 5 hectare area and to work towards creating new leisure and cultural facilities. W: During this work camp, we would like you to help build and erect playground equipment for children and seating arrangements for visitors – this project is in co-operation with the local environmental protection association (NABU) and you’ll be working mostly with wood. We would also like you to build a shelter for sheep and remove paving and cobbles from some smaller areas so that they can be naturalised. All work takes place outdoors, and you‘ll need to be able to work with tools and enjoy physically demanding labour. In you free time, you can discover Syke and its surroundings by bike or public transport, or share a barbecue with other young people from the area. Syke has sports and leisure facilities including swimming and riding, and at weekends you could take a trip to the North Sea. The village of Trassem is located in the idyllic Leukbachtal, part of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature park. In 2005, the construction of a new “Forest Experience Centre“ was started in the village. W: We would like you to join in with local young people to help build a Forest Experience Trail. This will include constructing a “suspension bridge” and creating a proper little “adventure course” with wood and rope – we will support any ideas you might have wherever possible. In addition, we would like you to get involved with a number of conservation and maintenance tasks in the grounds around the Centre, for example, building a campfire site, laying paths, designing and erecting information boards, laying a lawn etc. You might also be able to create your own exhibition featuring items made (by you) from wood. Close to Trassem is the beautiful wine-growing city of Saarburg, which boasts lots of sight-seeing attractions (such as a historical ruined castle and a picturesque town centre complete with waterfall) as well as outdoor cafés, an open air swimming pool, and a Bird of Prey Centre. In the north-eastern part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, right next-door to the Polish Republic, is one of Germany’s latest nature parks. It has at its centre an environmental conservation area known as the “Altwarper Binnendünen”, a huge stretch of dunelands dating back to the last ice age, which includes the “Neuwarper See” with the “Riether Werde”, an island not open to the public. W: The first part of your work takes place on this island which is an ornithological nesting place and stop-over for rare species of birds. Your help is needed with restoring the island’s natural water levels, which in turn will improve living conditions for flora and fauna. This includes reopening existing ditches and removing previously erected water defences. In addition, a building once used as a pumping station needs to be transformed into living quarters for birds and bats. On the mainland, we would like you to design and build a guided path through the dunes, which includes remodelling existing information boards and translating information into English and Polish. You’ll be supported by staff from the Centre for Experiential Learning and Environmental Awareness (ZERUM), the Federal Office for Environment and Nature and the Nature Park Office. Boat rides are part of your daily travel to and from work, and if you have a passion for environmental protection and the sea, you will have a brilliant three weeks. Your free time could be spent enjoying the excellent leisure facilities on offer, including water sports and swimming. Stapelburg is a small town with some 1,390 inhabitants which lies on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains on the border with Lower Saxony. Because of this ideal location in beautiful countryside adjoining the Harz Nature Park, Stapelburg is a preferred starting point for extensive hiking and other excursions around the ÒGreen BeltÓ region, GermanyÕs longest interconnected natural habitat system (some 1,393 km of it!). The ÒHorizonte 2006Ó Nature Tourism Camp is being run by a number of local and regional environmental associations and your help is needed with erecting signposts and information displays and arranging rest areas for the hiking trails as well as carrying out specific tasks for environmental protection. In addition, there are experiential environmental workshops, hiking tours in the Harz Nature Park and the region known as ÒGreen BeltÓ, and a number of interesting presentations. Other activities with the motto ÒThe Stranger in Me and OthersÓ are planned near the former East/West German border, the so-called ÒIron CurtainÓ, and will involve work camp participants and local people. In recent years, the residents, children and young people of the Drispenstedt district of Hildesheim have worked hard to create a better living environment as part of the “Soziale Stadt – Drispenstedt im Aufwind” programme. This has resulted in many social and inter-cultural connections being developed within the district. W: The plan for this summer is to build a “Tree Information Trail” along ecological and artistic lines. In addition to creating the information boards, we would like you to help with designing an information manual. You’ll have the opportunity to work with disabled members of the “Lebenshilfe” printing workshop and be involved with the production of a professionally bound manual which will be used by schools and children’s nurseries. This project is run in co-operation with the Local Authority and the Hildesheim Workshop Association “Practical Support for People with Disabilities”. We would also like you to take part in another project involving young local people working with disabled members of the community to write a book called “One Moment of Life”, which is to be designed and printed in the printing workshop. This place of cultural and eco-historical special interest still represents a form of land management widely in use during the Middle Ages. W: In co-operation with the Stavenhagen forestry office, your tasks will help to conserve and develop the unique character of this area and contribute to improving the environmental understanding and experience of its visitors. Specifically, you’ll be involved with creating an experiential trail, restoring a crossing point across a stream, and the charting and measuring of ancient beech and oak trees. You’ll be working in the open air and you’ll have bicycles to make your way between your accommodation and the “Tiergarten”. All these jobs prevent erosion of the dunes by wind and water, and you will make an important contribution to the island’s sea defences. The dunes are a nature reserve and offer a habitat for coastal animal and plant life. You will have bicycles to reach the particular beaches you’ll be working on. This is a project for people who love the sea, the beach, the sun and the wind. Wangerooge has numerous nature and bird sanctuaries and is a car-free zone. Since 1999, archaeologists from the Rhineland Countryside Association have been following in the footsteps of Iron Age settlers and working on the reconstruction of a settlement in Titz, home to a branch of the Rhineland Department for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments W: Under professional tutelage you will use authentic tools, and following original layout details excavated on the site, build a house within the Iron Age settlement location which will help paint a vivid picture of Iron Age daily life. You will shape tree trunks to be able to construct the building, build walls from wattle and daub and cover the roof with thatch. In addition, you will make Iron Age utensils and pottery and other everyday objects. There is a small study programme to teach you about archaeological digs and the methods employed to locate sites. Your help is required with the preparation and running of a three week holiday scheme for about 100 children, conducted by a local youth organisation. W: The scheme is supported by local young play workers on a voluntary basis together with experienced educators who will work with you to devise and run a programme for the children which, we hope, will incorporate many inspiring concepts from your own countries. Plans to date include games, art and crafts sessions, excursions and much more, and, at the end of the three weeks, a big party. Please be aware that this camp is labour intensive – you’ll be with the children from 8.00 in the morning to 17.00 in the afternoon, and you’ll be given a day off each week in addition to weekends, to compensate for the long working days. The grounds of the “Kahlenberg” Youth and Leisure Centre, run by the “Zeltplatz Brahmsee e.V” Association, are right on the shores of the Kiel Fjord (“Kieler Förde”) on the Baltic Sea. W: The Association only purchased the grounds last year and would like your help with renovating one of the buildings and improving the surrounding area. If you get too hot with all that hard work, you can cool off in the Baltic. Aside from the physically demanding work, we would also like you to use your imagination and creativity: for example, you could design and build small recreational areas in the grounds, or decorate walls and information boards. This autumn, the small town of Edewecht in the beautiful Ammerland district would like your help to convert an area of agricultural land into an environmental conservation project. W: There is a variety of outdoor tasks for you supported by local expertise. You’ll have the opportunity to take part in small group excursions to learn about local flora and fauna, and during these two weeks you could gain a lot of knowledge about nature conservation and countryside maintenance. Storkow Peace Village is an anti-racism youth project which aims to promote humanity, solidarity and inter-cultural youth work. In addition to your work, this camp gives you the opportunity to learn German. All tutors are experienced teachers of German as a foreign language and they too are participants in this work camp. At the edge of the Grunewald (one of Berlin’s large forest areas) on the shores of Lake Grunewald, is the Grunewaldheim Scout Centre. The centre is a popular holiday location for children and youth groups, a place where local associations hold their summer parties and kids can celebrate their birthdays. Aside from the work aspect, this international work camp will give you the opportunity to learn German. In addition to your work, this camp gives you the opportunity to learn some German. You’ll work for about three hours per day, followed by two hours of intensive language study, which will then continue in a variety of everyday settings. All tutors are experienced teachers of German as a foreign language and they, too, are participants in this work camp. The Grunewaldheim Centre is surrounded by some 30,000 square metres of grounds and this is currently demarcated by a very old and broken down fence. W: Your task will be to build a hedge out of dead wood around the perimeter of the old fence. The purpose of this is to protect the building and its users from wild boar, as well as provide nesting and shelter for birds, hedgehogs, mice and all kinds of insects: in a city, deadwood hedges fulfil an important ecological function. The Stormarn District Youth Organisation (KJR) would like your help this summer with turning the grounds of its Lütjensee Youth Centre into an environmentally friendly adventure playground. W: In co-operation with KJR staff you’ll develop ideas for the new playground and then you’ll set to work: you’ll build wooden climbing frames and other play equipment and site them in the grounds. You’ll have professional support and you don’t need to be skilled craftspeople – but you need to enjoy working with wood and tools such as hammers, saws and spades. In your free time, you can swim in a lake adjacent to the Youth Centre grounds, and make full use of the Centre’s facilities: climbing, basketball, football, beach volleyball, long evenings around the barbecue etc. The village of Lütjensee and its surrounding lakes are part of the beautiful “Stormarnische Schweiz” (“Stormarn’s Switzerland” – Stormarn being the local district). The Donatus Centre for Senior Citizens in Bad Bramstedt would like your help with the grounds of the centre: the plan is to create. W: Together with some of the senior citizens, a sensory garden area and get involved with a number of other improvement projects in the beautiful surroundings. We would also like your support with other local social projects, such as “Die Tafel” (“The Dining Table”) which collects groceries and distributes them to the poor, and the “Soziales Kaufhaus” (“Communal Store”) which works on a similar basis. By working with them, you’ll be able to get to know how both of these initiatives operate. This is a varied social project which is ideal for those of you who want to make a difference to people less fortunate than themselves. The small spa town of Bad Bramstedt offers some shopping facilities and is surrounded by beautiful countryside which has a good network of hiking trails. Hamburg and Lübeck are within easy reach by public transport, and at weekends you might like to visit the North Sea or the Baltic. Erftstadt lies between Cologne and Trier on the historical Roman road, some 12 kilometres of which is still recognisable. As part of the REGIONALE 2010, Erftstadt wants to make a special feature of 400 years of Roman history in the Rhineland, with special emphasis on Roman rural life and a comparison of mobility between then and now. The aim of this project, in co-operation with the „Rheinisches Amt für Bodendenkmalpflege“ (the regional curator of monuments), is to make the experience of rural life during the time of the Romans accessible again. This is why over the next few years it is planned to build a Roman hostelry, a „Mansio“, as a living museum by the side of the old Roman road. W: Your help is required to construct the first building for this inn by using historical clay-building methods. You will use stamped clay to fill in the timber-framed walls, and the roof will be tiled in the classic Roman fashion. In addition, this camp includes a small study programme, where you can learn in detail about Roman life. This will include excursions to Xanten, Trier and Cologne and other places of historical interest. In Kuhhorst, you have the opportunity to learn about living and working in a rural community. Run along holistic and ecological guidelines, this organic farm will teach you about a way of life where animals and humans live in close harmony. At the centre of this farm are a billy goat, 5 donkeys, 100 pigs, 200 cows, 600 ducks and 800 geese, which are being looked after carefully and humanely as truly ÒdomesticÓ (meaning Òpart of the householdÓ) animals. The animals are being cared for in co-operation with people with mental disabilities. In addition to potato and vegetable crops, the village has a dairy, a pasta production plant and farm shop. In summer, community life is centred around the beautiful farmyard. We would like your help with installing an information display for our visitors and residents, and with building a conservatory adjacent to the farm shop. In addition, with support from local experts, you can help renovate barn gates . Kuhhorst offers lots of open countryside surrounded by forests and waterways, all of it accessible for exploration by bicycle and on foot. A special attraction in the summer is the large number of visiting storks. Berlin city limits are only about 30 km away and you are welcome to organise your own entertainment. Lindlar is home to the “Bergisches Open Air Museum for Ecology and Rural Crafts and Culture“ which was established by the Rhineland Regional Authority. Houses and farms from the region are displayed at the museum providing an insight into past life styles and ecology. W: Your help is required with the creation of a forest experience trail to complement the existing displays. In addition, you might work on one of the farms or gardens using methods employed hundreds of years ago. The area is great for hiking and Cologne, Bonn and the river Rhine are within easy reach. Idyllically placed at the edge of the forest, some 4 km from the small town of Melle, is the guesthouse belonging to “Wilde Rose”, a self-governing cultural centre. The meeting centre part of the complex has already been lovingly restored and furnished. W: Now the time has come to tackle the outside pavilion and the communal rooms, which require renovation and brightening up, and to continue last year’s work on the sauna. You will need manual skills and a love of creative work. For the three week duration of this camp, you will have the opportunity to take part in a music workshop with professional musicians – you could sing or “groove” or play instruments. Under professional guidance, you’ll be writing your own songs in two languages, which will be performed at the end of the camp as part of a communal summer festival. A: In the meeting centre. You can use the large meadow near the house for sports and play activities, and the grounds feature a “sensory trail” and a small open-air stage. The beautiful Muehlental (Mill Valley) is one of the loveliest valleys within the Thuringian woodlands. It is the location of the Froschmuehle (Frog Mill) youth hostel, which is run by the Thuringian Youth Hostel Association in the grounds of a former saw and flour mill. Your tasks will be about shaping the grounds to suit their new purpose and include erecting fences, creating an open-air enclosure and seating arrangements and helping with the maintenance of grassed areas. During the first week, we would also like you to offer holiday workshops for children, and we would hope that you´ll contribute ideas, games, arts and crafts with an international flair. Work and explore nature in the fascinating alpine countryside of Berchtesgaden National Park. W: During the first two weeks you will help the national park staff to remove roots and branches from alpine meadows. Through this ‘forest-pasture separation’, the alpine pasture should return to its natural state, instead of one designed for human use. The third week of your camp will be spent on hikes and excursions with mountain experts. You will learn a lot about the alpine ecosystem and the work of looking after a national park. This camp is based within the grounds of the former “Hannover“ colliery, these days surrounded by open countryside. Now the location of the regional authority’s Westphalian Industrial Museum. part of the ongoing restoration work centres on three of the historic miners’ houses, to show the living conditions of both local and migrant workers. W: Your task is to establish two workers’ gardens for these houses, laying paths according to historic records, preparing the soil and starting the planting process to re-establish the original biodiversity once found in gardens such as these. Help is at hand from the staff of the eastern Ruhr region’s Biological Department as part of their “Value of Diversity” educational campaign. You could spend your free time exploring the wilderness surrounding the museum, or take advantage of the cultural and leisure facilities on offer in the nearby university city of Bochum, and elsewhere the Ruhr region. The association “kunstbauwerk e.V. (kunstbauwerk.de) has taken on the renovation of the former tobacco factory at Vierraden dating from 1880, and to contrast it with modern works of art. In the summer, the site will be transformed into a lively art exhibition centre, which attracts artists as well as those interested in the arts. The association’s name, an amalgamation of the words “art”, “building” and “works”, has previously given rise to erroneous expectations for some participants concerning the tasks at hand: please be advised that we would like you to be involved with renovation and building work. Until 1990, both the factory building and the owner’s mansion have been occupied by a number of different companies, and, as a result, both buildings have been dramatically altered. W: We would like your help with restoring the factory building to its original layout. Local craftsmen will work with you to clear and demolish old storage sheds and restore original boundaries. We would also like you to help with the creation of a parking area and the maintenance of the factory’s grounds. During the second half of the camp, we would like you to work in co-operation with our project partner, the “Internationalpark Unteres Odertal”, in both the Polish and the German areas of this international park. Your task will be to create a wildflower meadow, construct information boards and renovate paths. During August, you will still be able to visit the art exhibition “oder | odra” in the attic space. On August 20th, you are invited to the annual tobacco flower festival run by local associations. Vierraden is a small village in close proximity to the “Unteres Odertal” National Park, which you might like to explore by bike or on foot. The “Sozialpädagogisches Institut” Foundation is responsible for the running of a holiday centre called “Bergschlößchen” in Spremberg and a meeting centre for young people in the small town of Felixsee. The meeting centre lies on the banks of Lake Felix (“Felixsee”) surrounded by well wooded, beautiful countryside. The location is ideal for groups of children and young people to spend their free time and holidays playing sports and games in natural surroundings. W: Your task will be to help transform the centre on Lake Felix into a “Mining World Experience Centre”. This will require a lot of imagination and creative flair – under expert tutelage, you’ll work with clay and you’ll paint and do carpentry, create seating arrangements and a large wooden figure as well as prepare information and exhibition boards. From 25/08 to 27/08 you are invited to participate in the Youth Culture Festival which is taking place near Berlin and features live music and a number of arts and sports workshops. In your free time, you can swim in Lake Felix, play beach volleyball and table tennis and make use of the open-air bowling alley and inline skating facility (please bring your own skates).
