General Description: L ow- growing perennial, c reeping to vinelike, bearing both fertile and s terile s tems . Sterile s tems horizontal, flat on the ground, 5 - 2 5 x 0 .5 - 1 c m. Sterile leaves many, s mall, s c alelike to needlelike, 1 -veined, s pirally or alternately arranged, s preading, upc urved, 5 - 6 x 0 .5 - 0 .7 mm, margins entire.

Reproductive Characteristics: G enerally 1 - 2 erec t fertile s tems , unbranc hed, 3 .5 - 6 x 0 .4 - 0 .7 c m, inc luding the s ingle s pore- bearing c onelike s truc ture at the tip of the s talk. C ones erec t, 1 0 - 2 0 x 2 .5 - 5 .5 mm, or 1 /3 - 1 /2 total height of fertile s tem; leaves s preading, rarely with toothed margins . S porophylls s preading to as c ending, 4 .5 - 5 x 0 .5 - 0 .9 mm, margins rarely toothed, mos tly res embling the vegetative leaves . Rec ognizable throughout the year.

Identif ication Tips: T he genus Lycopodium has fertile c onelike s truc tures that are either s es s ile or on branc hed s talks with s pars e, reduc ed leaves ; Lycopodium s s p. us ually grow in dry upland habitats ; Lycopodiella s s p. are us ually found in wetlands ; their fertile s tems have many well- developed leaves and are unbranc hed, produc ing 1 erec t c onelike s truc ture per s tem. Lycopodiella inundata is the only s pec ies of this genus that is found in the P ac ific N orthwes t.

Range: E uras ia; A K s outh to the P ac ific N orthwes t; throughout s outhern C anada and the northeas tern U .S., s outh to N C , and wes t to M N and I A .

Habitat/Ecology: Sphagnum bogs , wet s andy plac es , wetlands adjac ent to lakes , mars hes , and s wampy ground. T ypic al elevations are 0 to 2 0 0 0 m (0 - 6 5 0 0 ft); in WA doc umented elevations are at 3 to 5 7 5 m (9 - 1 8 8 0 ft). A s s oc iated s pec ies inc lude s weetgale (Myrica gale), s edges (Carex s pp.), rus hes (Juncus s pp.), white beaks edge (Rhynchos pora alba), roundleaf s undew (Dros era rotundifolia), s tic ky tofieldia (Triantha occidentalis s s p. brevis tylis ), and s phagnum mos s (Sphagnum s pp.).

Comments: H ydrologic c hanges , invas ive s pec ies , and rec reational impac ts may lead to degradation or los s of habitat. T his taxon is rare in s everal s tates and C anadian provinc es .
