Emphasis is on knowledge & application of psychopathology and psychopharmacologic therapies across the lifespan.Objectives:Throughout this course we will:1. Discuss concepts of health promotion, health restoration and disease prevention in the care of individuals with psychiatric disorders in a variety of mental health settings.2. Use critical thinking to provide therapeutic nursing interventions for patients who are experiencing psychiatric health problems related to alterations in functional health patterns.3. Reinforce therapeutic communication skills with patients in a variety of mental health care settings to reduce the likelihood of related complications.4. Apply concepts, principles, theories and models from physical, psychological and sociocultural sciences to the care of individuals within the mental health system.5. Demonstrate accountability for intervention and safety in the nursing care of psychiatric patients.6. Examine alterations in growth and psychosocial development and assist individuals in therapeutic tasks designed to effectively deal with these deficiencies.7. Discuss practice implications within the ethical/legal standards of professional nursing in the care of patients with mental disorder.8. Grading CriteriaGrading System:Grading is based on satisfactory completion of clinical experiences, clinical assignments and satisfactory performance on the Clinical Evaluation Tool.All assignments are graded on an either satisfactory or unsatisfactory basis (S/U). If the assignment rubric applies a numeric score, assignment must be completed at a score of 75% or higher to be considered satisfactory.S-Satisfactory U-UnsatisfactoryTypes of assessments:All assignments are done on an individual basis, except for the group teaching/service-learning project. By virtue of being registered in a nursing course, students agree to refrain from cheating. If cheating in any form (academic dishonesty) is detected, appropriate action will be taken. (Refer to USF Academic Dishonesty Policy). Grading Guidelines:A satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade will be assigned on each project based on the posted grading rubrics or expectations. Late or incomplete assignments will only be accepted with prior approval from the course instructor. There are no extra credit assignments available. Failure to pass any one of the required clinical assignments will result in a final grade of “U” for clinical, regardless of satisfactory performance in the other areas of this course. Clinical performance will be evaluated per the clinical evaluation tool. The student is responsible for reviewing the evaluation tool, and being aware of the criteria expected for satisfactory completion of the course. Due to the variety of clinical settings, assignment due dates will be set by the clinical instructor. Journals are due weekly and are to be completed within 24 hours of the clinical day unless otherwise specified by instructor. Make-up Guidelines: At the discretion of the clinical faculty, make up assignments may not be in the same format as the original assignment. Late Assignments/ Incorrect Method of Submission:Late or incomplete assignments will only be accepted with prior approval from the clinical course instructor. All requests to hand in assignments late must be made to the instructor in writing via e-mail. Schedule Change Guidelines:Students are responsible for checking the announcement site for the course at least on a weekly basis before the clinical day. The course announcement site on Canvas will be utilized for all announcements, including schedule changes. Individual e-mail announcements will not be sent to the students. Student ExpectationsSafety: Students are expected to adhere to all safety guidelines set forth by the clinical instructor, facility, and scope of practice. This includes, but is not limited to, appropriate attire, confidentiality, knowledge of policies and contraband, professionalism, and other areas of concern as delineated in the course evaluation. Attendance: Students are required to complete 90 (Ninety) clinical, some of which may occur in the lab. Students are required to attend all scheduled laboratory classes and clinical experiences including pre- and post- conferences. Absenteeism and tardiness may negatively impact student learning and the safety of the environment. Tardiness is defined as arriving to the clinical setting more than five minutes after the designated start time. Persistent tardiness (in excess of two occurrences) will count as an unexcused absence from a clinical day. Notification of the clinical instructor MUST be made prior to the start of the clinical day in the event of an absence. Failure to notify the instructor prior to the start of the clinical day (a “no call, no show”) may result in failure of the course unless there is a documented urgent situation that prevented notification. A clinical day may be excused only in the event of illness or an urgent situation, and the status of excused/ unexcused will be determined by the clinical instructor. The maximum clinical days allowed for make-up will be for two (2) excused absences. More than 2 absences, whether excused or unexcused, may result in a course grade of “U”. The maximum unexcused absences allowed for make-up is one (1). More than one unexcused absence will result in a “U” for the course. Cell phones: Cell phones may only be brought to the clinical site with instructor permission. Sending text messages or calling anyone other than the instructor while in the clinical setting constitutes unprofessional and unsafe practice and may result in course failure. Individual agencies are not responsible for the security of student cell phones. Cell phones are NEVER allowed in forensic settings. What to Expect of the Instructor: Clinical faculty will facilitate the student’s learning through role modeling, clinical rounding with assessment of student’s knowledge and ability for critical thinking about patient issues, and critique of assignments. The clinical instructor will inform the students during the first day of clinical about the method of contact during the clinical day. Pre-conference may be utilized to set the day’s learning objectives and answer questions. Post-conference will be utilized for peer-review of assignments, instructor feedback, and time to process the events of the day. A USF faculty member will be available throughout the clinical day for any needed assistance. Permission to use Lecture(s): Students may utilize information from this course to assist in their future nursing care of patients when in compliance with copyright issues. Important USF and USF CON InformationFirst Day Attendance: All students are required to drop undesired courses by the 5th day of each semester to avoid fee liability and academic penalty. Students are required to attend the first class meeting of courses for which they are registered prior to the first day of the semester. This policy is effective so that USF classroom space and USF student opportunities are maximized where demand exceeds availability of seats. Initial professor class rolls list students registered prior to the first day of the semester for the purpose of dropping students not in attendance first class meeting. Professors notified timely of extenuating circumstances may waive the first class meeting requirement. For Web-based classes: Students enrolled in web-based classes must check in by Friday at 5 pm in the first week of the semester. Withdrawal Policy (approved Faculty Council 12/15/06; revised 1/19/07)Withdrawals are limited to 1 per course, with a limit of 2 per undergraduate or graduate program. Withdrawals are defined as officially withdrawing from any class after the Drop/Add period, and before the final Withdrawal date as outlined in the Academic Calendar. Any student withdrawing in excess of stated policy may be dismissed from the College of Nursing, unless the College of Nursing has pre-approved a documented Medical and/ or Emergent situation. Incomplete GuidelinesDefinition: An incomplete grade (“I”) is exception and awarded at the instructors discretion only when students are unable to complete course requirements due to illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control.
