Welcome back to clinical. Once again, we look at the role of the nurse in the context of provider of patient centered care, member of the profession and health care and patient safety advocate. During the next few weeks of clinical, we will discuss these roles as they apply to daily clinical activities in the areas of medical surgical nursing and pediatrics and obstetrics, along with use of the nursing process and evidence based practice.

Week One: How do you see yourself this semester in clinical? Do you perceive a change in the way you prioritize your care? In what areas has your knowledge base grown?

Week Two: Discuss a patient you cared for today. As a provider of patient centered care, what therapeutic communication techniques did you use in the assessment phase of the nursing process? What techniques did you use in the evaluation phase to confirm if any interventions were successful?

Week Three: Discuss a patient you cared for in clinical today. What was their medical diagnosis? As a provider of care, what new nursing or medical skills/techniques did you observe as you assisted in the care of this patient today? What nursing diagnoses were formulated for the patient?

Week Four: Discuss, as a group, a patient cared for today. If this had been your patient, what nursing role would you assume? Why? What nursing diagnoses would be appropriate for the patient and family? What interventions?

Week Five: Discuss, as a group, a patient cared for today. If this had been your patient, what nursing role would you assume? Why? What nursing diagnoses would be appropriate for the patient and family? What interventions?

Week Six: Read the article provided by your instructor. How did this article tie in with your nursing practice today? How do journal articles enhance the nursing role of member of the profession?

Week Seven: Read the article provided by your instructor. How did this article tie in with your nursing practice today? How do journal articles enhance the nursing role of member of the profession?

Week Eight: Read the article provided by your instructor. How did this article tie in with your nursing practice today? How do journal articles enhance the nursing role of member of the profession?

Week Nine: Read the nursing article provided to you by your instructor. Answer the accompanying questions. How did this article tie in with your nursing practice today? Which nursing role does it reinforce? Why?

Week Ten: Most students by this week have experiences in pediatrics, labor and delivery, post partum, and nursery. Have you encountered any legal/ethical issues? How were they resolved? Did you agree with the resolution? Why or why not?

Week Eleven: Have you encountered any death and dying issues when in clinical in maternal child health? How did you react to the situation? Was the information or readings you did in Level One helpful in this situation? What was helpful? What was not helpful? What nursing roles did you observe in other nurses in the death and dying situation?

Twelve: As this semester ends, what role challenges do you anticipate in the next semester? Clinical work will become more independent as the last semester progresses. What nursing experiences have you had this semester that will lay a broad base of support to the nursing roles of provider of patient centered care, member of the profession , patient safety advocate and member of the Health Care Team?
