Technological changes and advancements are continually enhancing the care provided by nurses and other medical disciplines. In seeking more information regarding the informatics field, an interview was conducted with Angela MacKay, RN, MSN. Her thoughts on the importance of nursing informatics in providing quality patient care were insightful and inspiring.Angela is the Director of Nursing Informatics at Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) in Dothan, Alabama. Angela attended George Washington University where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus in Healthcare Quality. She has been in her current position at SAMC since May 2013. Prior to moving to Dothan, she held several positions in both nursing and informatics. She has clinical nursing experience in women’s health and emergency nursing, as well as general medical surgical floor nursing. Her previous informatics experience includes working as a clinical analyst with McKesson and also in the clinical research area at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. When asked why she chose her current position, Angela explained she joined the SAMC team at a critical time. SAMC is converting to the McKesson Paragon Hospital Information System (HIS) in April 2014. Angela stated she was excited about the prospect of being involved with the transition from the very beginning. Her primary goal in helping to build the Paragon system is to make it as efficient, non-redundant, and usable as possible. This echoes the sentiment that “the primary interest of nursing informatics is to expand how data, information, and knowledge are used within nursing practice” (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012, p. 391). Angela believes her clinical nursing experience enhances her capabilities as an informatics nurse. She explained that in order to design accessible systems, she had to first understand what systems were needed and how exactly they would be used by the providers. When questioned about the most common quality issue she deals with in her daily work, Angela was quick to respond that she works diligently to design processes and documentation that assist in improving all areas of quality. Healthcare quality is truly her passion. How does informatics affect quality? She gave the example of preventing hospital acquired deep venous thrombosis (DVT). She understands her responsibility to both the patient and the provider is to design electronic processes on assessment, ordering, and documentation to ensure DVT prevention steps are accomplished. One of the main reasons she chose informatics was to affect quality of healthcare on a broader level. She was seeking to impact quality from a population based perspective. She stated the reason her degree is focused on healthcare quality is because quality is always the ultimate goal.Angela stays current on the latest healthcare regulations by subscribing to multiple listservs and being a member of organizations such as the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). “NCQA has helped to build consensus around important health care quality issues by working with large employers, policymakers, doctors, patients and health plans to decide what’s important, how to measure it, and how to promote improvement” (“About NCQA”, n. d.). Through the efforts of organizations like NCQA, quality healthcare in America has been on the rise. Like NCQA, Angela remains diligent in her mission. She understands where she belongs in the nursing field. She believes she has found her niche and plans to continue impacting quality of healthcare on a daily basis.ReferencesKearney-Nunnery, R.
