Appendix B: Plant Nutrient Laboratory Report

Conduct the Plant Nutrient Virtual Laboratory. In each experiment, 12 plants have been grown in a nutrient solution. Six act as a control and are grown in a complete nutrient solution, and six are grown in a solution that is missing one or more nutrients. Nutrients and their concentrations are provided in on page 3. In experiments 1–5, the test plants are missing one nutrient each. In experiment 6, test plants are missing six nutrients.

Answer the following questions in 1 to 2 sentences each.

1. Complete the following table. Compare Test Plants 1–5 with corresponding controls using the magnification tool. Identify the missing nutrient by analyzing deficiency symptoms. Present your observations, and offer reasoning.

|Experiments 1–5 |Missing nutrient |Observations and reasoning for selection |

|Test Plant 1 | | |

|Test Plant 2 | | |

|Test Plant 3 | | |

|Test Plant 4 | | |

|Test Plant 5 | | |

2. Test Plant 6 is lacking several nutrients. List at least four possible nutrients missing from the solution. Suggest two methods that would allow you to determine the identification of each.

3. What is the role of an experimental control?

4. Why were the plants grown in a nutrient solution instead of soil? Explain your answer.

5. This experiment had several control plants and test plants for each nutrient. Explain why this approach is necessary for scientific experiment.
