DESCRIPTION

This course engages students in oral and written practice in terminology and culture as used in healthcare and related fields (nursing, health science, nutrition, kinesiology, psychology, sociology, social work, etc.). The exploration of this terminology occurs via case studies and culture readings. Similarities and differences in cultural aspects and approaches as related to healthcare are evaluated and discussed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Understand and interpret Spanish vocabulary related to Healthcare

2. Recognize and understand cultural similarities and differences related to Hispanic clients in Healthcare fields

3. Practice and enhance Spanish oral and written comprehension as needed in Healthcare

4. Practice and enhance Spanish written skills as needed in Healthcare

5. Apply Spanish language and knowledge of Hispanic cultures to create and evaluate case studies

6. Define and examine the Healthcare needs of Hispanics in the US

PREREQUISITES

Prior to taking this course, the SPAN 253 class (Intermediate Healthcare Spanish III) must have been taken, and all of the areas of the exam SPAN 295 (Junior Assessment) must have been passed.

1. ONLINE PARTICIPATION (50% = 5% per module)

The completion of the 10 sequenced content modules is essential for the comprehension and practice of the topics covered in class. Since this in an online course, all participation takes place in Blackboard, and assignments are turned in via each module in Blackboard. Each module is to be completed in one week (see course calendar at the end of the syllabus). The agenda and points for each activity are listed in each module. Each module covers one chapter in Culture, Health, and Food in Latin America and one chapter in Medicina y Servicios Médicos and counts for a total of 120 points. Some assignments are turned in individually and some assignments are turned in as a group (you will find the pertinent instructions in each module).

Please note that each module is to be completed by Friday at midnight of that week (except for Module 1, which is due the Friday of Week 2). All online activities will have a DUE DATE and that no late work will be accepted!

2. RESEARCH PROJECT (5%)

You will pick two cultural topics from Celebrating Latino Folklore and write a brief blog entry in Spanish (250 words total) providing a definition and description of each of the two topics, as well as research and describe a real-life case where the phenomenon has occurred or has been applied, and why you chose the topics. The blog entries will start in week 3 of the quarter. During the first week of the quarter you will be assigned a week for your blog entry.

3. QUIZZES (20% = 4% per quiz)

There will be 5 Online Quizzes, which will be based on the topics from the two textbooks. Each quiz will cover 2 content modules. Quizzes are scheduled for the weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. Each quiz will be open Thursday 8am-Saturday 8am of that week. They are posted on Blackboard under QUIZZES. Quizzes are timed (1 hour per quiz), and you will not be allowed to go back to already answered questions. You need to study and prepare for the quizzes the same as if you were to take them in the classroom!

4. STAMP exam/Special exam in Lab UH-007 (10%)

You will take a test (similar to the one in Span 295) during Week 9 of the quarter in the MMLC UH-007. Test dates and times will be announced at the beginning of the quarter. There will be two days/times provided to fit your schedule. The test will take approximately 2-2.5 hours.

3. FINAL EXAM (15%)

This exam will be cumulative and consist of questions that will test your knowledge of the vocabulary and topics covered in this course, as well as your ability for critical thinking.

Extra Credit

Your instructor may give you an extra credit opportunity. The activities for extra credit are established solely by your instructor and only account for up to 5% of the grade.

PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

Plagiarism is the presentation as one’s own, the ideas and writing of another. Plagiarism is academically dishonest and subjects the offending students to penalties up to and including expulsion. Students must make appropriate acknowledgements of the original source where material written or compiled by another is used. Plagiarism and cheating are violations of the Student Discipline Code (see Bulletin of Courses) and may be dealt with by both the instructor and the Judicial Affairs’ Officer.
