Calm Classroom Contest Winners

Calm Classroom is a school wide program that teaches students how to manage stress and anxiety. Recently, all SMS students had the opportunity to participate in our Calm Classroom Contest, where they could write their very own technique. The winners of the contest will read their technique on Calm Classroom Mondays to the entire school and also be awarded a $50 gift card. We are very proud of all the students who participated in the contest and look forward to hearing student created techniques!! Congratulations to all Calm Classroom winners!!

SMS Behavior Policy & Celebrations

The Shields Middle School Behavior Policy and celebrations encourage all students to act in a positive way. All SMS students participate in our Reward Day opening ceremony every month. Every student has the opportunity to participate in the Reward Day grade level activities based on the student’s behavior effort for the month. Students and teachers work very hard to ensure students are celebrated for their efforts, so please make sure to speak to your child about how their effort makes a difference!

School Safety

Thank you for your continued support as we are following the morning and afternoon traffic patterns expectations. As the weather starts to improve, students will remain outside in the morning. All students should be entering through the back entrance for morning entry. Thank you for your support!

Safety is a primary concern of all members of the SMS community; please continue to speak with your child about best choices as they travel to and from school. Please remind students to travel in pairs or groups, use headphones wisely, and be aware of surroundings. It is also extremely important that parents and students discuss how they will travel home before they leave for school. We have a number of students who are waiting to call home at the end of the day instead of walking home in groups or pairs. Please make sure to have this conversation before the start of the day!

Supportive Environment

BPNC – Parent’s Arts and Crafts

Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4-6pm parents are invited to join the arts and crafts class. Currently, the parents are working on recycling items into art pieces, specifically old frames repurposed with foam materials. All parents in the community are invited to join the group!

Youth Leadership Meeting

The Youth Leadership Council provides an opportunity for students to take a leadership role in their school and local community. 7th and 8th grade students have been invited to participated, interested students should come to the main office for more information.

Parent Involvement

School Uniform Policy

During the winter months, students are coming to school with boots and sweatshirts to stay warm. We encourage students to dress appropriately as they travel to and from school. However, students will not be able to wear hoodies in school or their boots. Please make sure your child has the appropriate shoes (all black, brown, or white shoes) and sweaters (all white, gray, purple, and no hoodies) for the school day.

Ambitious Instruction

NWEA Testing

Students take NWEA to measure their progress in reading and math. This winter all SMS students in grades 5th-8th tested for NWEA Math. Teachers and students will be using their winter scores to push their learning to prepare for the spring testing in NWEA. Students have been working hard to reach the RIT scores and we want to continue this momentum as we move into the spring months! If parents have any questions please come to the office to set-up a meeting to discuss NWEA.
