You are now at the age when you can earn your driver’s license and begin to drive! Driving is the next step in your maturity as a young adult. You will soon have the ability to be more independent and able to travel on your own. With the privilege of driving a motor vehicle there is great responsibility and also great risks. This semester, I provide you with the necessary information and skills required to pass the New Jersey Driver’s examinations. You will need to pass both a written exam and a behind-the-wheel exam before you will acquire you probationary license. I will emphasis to you many of the serious conditions you may encounter when you are part of the driving community. This course should be taken very seriously for many reasons, most importantly, for your safety, for the safety of your passengers and for the safety of others on the roadways. You will be required to fully comprehend the laws put forth by our lawmakers in New Jersey before acquiring a New Jersey driver’s license. There are many laws that have changed over the years and the dangers facing young people today on our roadways are more risky than ever before. Heavy traffic, distracted drivers, reckless and careless drivers are constant threats to your safety. Your best defense to avoid accidents is your total awareness and complete concentration when you are driving on the roadways. We will cover many of the potentially dangerous behaviors on the roadways.I have put together a portfolio for you to use while in this course. I encourage you to read it thoroughly prior to the beginning of this course so you are completely aware of what is required in Driver’s Education, and also share with your parents and guardians. I have also included in this folder agreements for you, the student to sign and also information for your parents. Those documents for your parents must be signed and returned to me during our first week of Driver’s Education. Good health and Safe Driving, 266319038735000Driver's Education Course Dear ParentsI will be teaching your teens Driver's Education this semester. There will be a lot of material to cover during this course. My primary goal is to provide my students with the tools and knowledge to keep them safe when driving a motor vehicle and provide them instruction of all driving laws in New Jersey. We will be covering information necessary for your teens to pass the written portion of the New Jersey Driver's exam.GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSE PROGRAM (GDL)The State of New Jersey introduced a new law for young drivers under the age of 21 in 2010 called THE NEW JERSEY GRADUATED LICENSE PROGRAM. This law makes it mandatory for all young drivers under the age of 21 to display a decal on the plates of the car they are driving. The decals are available for purchase at any State of New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles office. The decals are sold in pairs for four dollars a pair. The decals must be affixed to the front and back plates on the car whenever your teen is driving. The decals can be removed when you are driving your car. As stated on the State of New Jersey's website, studies show that a young driver's risk of being involved in a car crash is highest within the first 12-24 months of driving. The GDL program delays full privileges to young drivers during times and situations when most accidents occur. The objective of this law is to provide teens with guidelines and restriction when driving until they have had more experience on the roadways and to protect the lives of young drivers, their passengers and others on the roadways. Data has proven fatalities and accidents have been reduced since the inception of the GDL program. Full detailed information about the GDL program can be found on the links listed below. I have also attached a separate sheet with information of the GDL restrictions. you child has a disability or special needs, please inform me at the start of this course. I will accommodate and modify all lessons as needed.Because most of us have been driving for some time, we take our knowledge of signs, lines on our roadways, speed limits, passing techniques, turning, signaling, parking maneuvers and many others, for granted. These basics are familiar to experienced drivers, however, may not be fully understood by new teenage drivers. 13716009020175Driver's Education High School00Driver's Education High SchoolWhile driving with your children, I encourage you to explain some of the things I have listed above. This way your teen can see and connect the information they will be learning in my classroom to real-life situations. Feel free to contact me via email or call the main office any time if you have questions or concerns. I will respond within the next school day. This is an exciting time for your teenagers. Together, let’s work to make it safe! THE GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSE (GDL) IS A PROBATIONARY LICENSE FOR YOUNG DRIVERS UNDER THE AGE OF 21The GDL law in The State of New Jersey restricts for young drivers from driving at certain times and under certain conditions when it is most dangerous for them to be on the roadways. may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5 a.m. may only transport one passenger, unless the driver is accompanied by a parent or guardian or the passengers are the driver’s dependents (children). cannot use a cell phone (hand-held or hands-free), hand-held video games or any other hand-held wireless electronic devices (i.e., ipod, GPS).must ensure that they and all of their passengers wear seat belts. must display the GDL decals on any vehicle they drive.face a fine of $100 for a violation under the GDL law.may not plea bargain any point carrying offense Chapter 1- The NJ Driver License SystemName: ________________________________??? ??? ??? ??? A Texting Driver’s Education. Should Texting While Driving Be Illegal In Every State? Article 1. A Texting Driver’s EducationWhen Mr. Kaiserman was driving his truck and first saw Reggie’s car, what did he notice and think to himself? How fast was Reggie driving at the time of the accident?Reggie’s car clipped another car. What happened when Reggie clipped the Saturn with 2 men inside? What damage was done to Reggie’s vehicle and what injuries did Reggie have? What were the other injuries with the victims of this crash? How many text messages were sent and received minutes and seconds before the collision? The article states that scientist have related our need to check an incoming message and our impulse to read it to that of “a lion in the brush” and just as difficult to ignore. Explain what you think this means? There is a lot of new research indicating that cell phones and electronic devices are very addicting for people today and there are more and more accidents involving cell phone usage while driving. Have you ever been in a car when the driver receives a text and reads it? If yes, does it make you feel unsafe?Do you feel the urge to look at a text immediately after you hear the ping from your phone? How would you suggest the best way to avoid the urge to look at a text and also respond to a text when driving?Article 2. Do You Think Texting While Driving Should Be Illegal in Every State??Answer the following questions from the articleShould texting while driving be banned in every state? What about driving while using a cell phone? Why do you think?many teenagers still choose to text and drive, even though it has been proven to be so dangerous — even?more dangerous than drunken driving? (click on this link)Do you think Americans, and especially teenagers, are aware that texting while driving is extremely dangerous? Does the country need a better awareness program?Or do you think states need to pass even stiffer laws (or any laws in some states) to crack down on distracted driving? Would you support your phone carrier developing a system to block incoming and outgoing texts from reaching the driver, like the one described in this article?PSA ProjectStudents will view two selected Youtube videosCheck out this video on YouTube: “Liz Marks Texting & Driving Story” HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" out this video on YouTube: AAA Video Analysis Provides Shocking Results Among Teen Drivers HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" . After viewing the two videos above complete the following project:Imagine you have experienced firsthand the effects of texting while driving. Maybe you have been involved in a car when the driver was texting or talking on a cell phone that caused an accident or had a near miss. Or maybe you have or a loved one has been the victim of a texting and driving accident. You are aware of the terrible tragic consequences of such actions. You are starting a program in your school similar to MADD ( Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers) . Your program is against texting, talking on a cell and driving. You need to promote your program to get others in your school to join. Design a poster promoting your PSA (Public Service Announcement). Be creative and make this poster one that will really draw attention to your cause! Make sure you have a name for your program that teens can relate to. 2. Today, there are many apps that people can download to their phones which will prevent calls and messages from coming into their phone when they are driving. Research this concept on the internet. Which program do you feel is the best one to use? Provide the link and the name of the app. Also write a short description about the one you chose and why you chose it against others.Would you consider using an app as a means to avoid checking your phone while driving thereby keeping you, your passengers, and others on the roadways safe?Do you think this idea should be enforced by lawmakers after reading the articles in the previous assignment and viewing the Youtube videos in this assignment? Explain your answer. Finally, are you aware of the “Airplane Mode” and also the “Do Not Disturb” mode on many cell phones that will block all incoming texts and calls? Would you considering switching these modes on before driving your car?3. Lastly, Write two paragraphs or more and describe how this accident has affected Liz’s future and how texting and driving has changed her life. How has it affected others in her family? Do you think this video will stop teens from texting and driving?
