Make sure you take advantage of all of the resources we have in place!ONLY TWO SATURDAY SCHOOLS BEFORE REPORT CARDS!Only two Saturday School’s remain until the end of the 1st Marking Period! Take full advantage and come this Saturday!The Saturday School sessions for the Spring Term are listed below. Saturday school runs from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM! In our second year as a school giving students an outlet to make their voices heard we will be conducting Participatory Budgeting. There will be displays in the lobby on Tuesday and Thursday presenting proposals to spend $4,000. On Friday YOU(!) the students will be voting for which project will receive the funding. As part of our push to increase future civic engagement, UNHS will also be conducting a Student Voter Registration Drive. Any student that is a citizen of the United States and at least 16 years old is eligible to register to vote! Any student that will be 18 on Election Day in November can vote in the upcoming Presidential Election! Opportunities to register will be provided in your Social Studies classes or see Mr. Wohlers if you have any questions. If you are interested, please bring a New York State issued Identification card or your Social Security number this Thursday.ALTERNATE SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4THWe will be running an alternate schedule on Wednesday, March 4th, 2020.All 9th grade students will be attending a trip to the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn. Please arrive to school by 8:15 AM and report to the Cafeteria. Ms. Loccisano has permission slips if you have yet to receive and return one.All 10th grade students will be taking the PSAT. Arrive to school by 8:15 AM, check in at the tables in the lobby of the school for your room assignment and report to your classroom. All 11th grade students will be taking the SAT. The event will be held in the UNHS library during 5th period as well as 6th period lunch.?See Ms. Villacorta or Ms. Asch on the second floor for details!3rd ANNUAL LGBTQ WRITERS IN SCHOOL AUTHOR VISITUNHS was proud to welcome Yanyi, author of Yale University Press’ award winning poetry collection, “The Year of Blue Water,” on Friday, 2/28 to discuss his work with our junior class. The book reflects on his life as a Chinese-American, transgender man and his journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. Our students truly made an impact on him with their questions, original poetry, analysis, and artwork. They were moved and grateful for his visit. Incorporating LGBTQ content in our curriculum creates a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all! Lunar New Year brings together family and friends to celebrate the most popular traditional Chinese holiday. As is now a tradition at UNHS, we showcased and celebrated aspects of traditional and modern Chinese culture. Performances included: students singing modern Chinese songs, students and special guests performing Chinese songs and dances, our UNHS Dance Team and Korean Club performing a selection of performance. Red envelopes which symbolize good fortune were distributed to our audiences during the festivity. The show included learning moments about different aspects of Chinese culture. Thank you for all that attended to celebrate the great talent we have at UNHS!? LEADERSHIP STUDENT LUNCHEON AN INSPIRING EXPERIENCE!Prior to the Lunar New Year Celebration, UNHS hosted our first Asian Leadership Student Luncheon! The luncheon focused on discussion centered on the unique aspects of assimilation into the US culture, networking and the professional environment. Presenters shared their experiences being an Asian American and how they overcame their own personal struggles to become the successful executives that they are at Moody’s Corporation.? ATTENDS DOE LGBTQ STUDENT ALLIANCE SUMMITTOn Monday, January 27th, students from UNHS' Sexuality and Gender Alliance club attended the Department of Education's annual conference bringing together LGBTQ students and their allies from all five boroughs. Participants attended educational workshops on how to continue to make our school culture supportive and inclusive of LGBTQ students. Along with two other high schools, University Neighborhood High School was?tied for the highest ranked high school in the entire borough.? We received an "excellent" rating in all but one area which is equivalent to a 96.4%.?Ratings like this do not happen with a few talented people making decisions from an office, rather they happen when many teachers?take on leadership roles and take ownership over their work whether it is big or small each and every day.? It succeeds when there is a staff in place that cares about student’s well-being both inside and outside of the classroom.? It succeeds when parents are involved in their child's education and join us at events, conferences and stay in communication with us via phone, jupiter, letters, instagram, the website, remind app, etc.? Students may use their cell phones in the hallway, library, lobby, and cafeteria. When the teacher allows, students may use cell phones within the classroom for instructional purposes. If a student is caught using a cell phone or electronic devise during instruction without the teacher’s permission the following steps will be followed:1. Teacher warning to put device away.2. Teacher will call home to contact the parent.3. The dean will be called to speak with the student.4. The dean will confiscate the device until the end of the day and contact the parents.5. The parent will be called in for a conference and will take the device.6. I believe the addition will go a long way toward our goal of being a fully inclusive school environment while remaining true to being a college and career prepatory high school!
