Part 1: Determining where you are open to applying based on: location, school community, and certification

Based on our experience, the three criteria that candidates most commonly evaluate when targeting their job search are location, school community, and content area/ grade level. This section is devoted to exploring resources that can help inform your job search parameters based on the three aforementioned criteria.

Location One component of a prospective candidate's job search is determining the location or distance you are able to travel to get to work each day. This distance will be different for every candidate; however, we have found it is important that candidates consider all modes of transit as well as availability of parking. Additionally, teacher candidates must consider their commitments outside of work that might contribute/inform to their commute. For example, you might not be commuting from your home to your school, but rather from your child's school or daycare. All of these variables are critical to determining the radius within which you should be searching for an NYC DOE school.

In the New Teacher Finder, you have had the opportunity to specify both the top three boroughs you'd prefer to work in, as well as regions throughout the boroughs that you are open to working in. You can go back to this preference section at any time. On the next several pages you will find other tools that will help you determine where schools are located as well as the distance you are willing to travel to get to school each day. Please see below for articles that will help you understand the location of the various geographic districts in the NYC DOE.

School Community A second component that candidates evaluate during their job search is the school community. While you cannot get a full picture of the school community through online research, the NYC DOE has many available tools that can help you gain a preliminary understanding of the school's values and academic goals. The next several pages will walk you through how to access a school's quality snapshot and quality guide as well as explain what information can be found in each location. These NYC DOE tools in addition to a school's website can help create a fuller picture of a school community.

Certification/ Grade Level A final critical component that candidates will reference in their job search is their desired certification and grade level. We encourage teacher candidates to consider what their preferred content, grade level and setting is, and what content areas, grade levels and settings you would be willing to teach in. It is important to prioritize what you would be willing to teach within your certification and what you would not. While many job postings might not have the exact setting you would be teaching in, the school quality guide coupled with some additional research may bring to light the types of positions that might be available at a school.

Researching Individual Schools by School Location

The "Find a School" tool on the NYCDOE website is a resource you can use to look for schools by name, grade level, or district and view each school's address and phone number. You can also access their progress reports, learning environment surveys, and quality reviews, which are explained in detail below:

In addition to searching by name, grade, and borough, you can use the navigation on the left-hand side to filter by grade level and school type. As you can see in the image above, we were able to filter by neighborhood, and then were able to check off the grade levels we wanted to further explore. Each orange dot represents a school. Once you click on an orange dot you can see the name of the school, address, neighborhood, district, phone number and grade levels offered. You can also click into the school profile. While you are researching schools by location, it is worth using tools like Google Maps to determine how long it might take you to get to a school in the morning as well as commute home in the evening. It is important to be mindful of other commitments that you might have. For example, do you have commitments regarding dropping your child off at school or picking them up in the evening? All these factors are important to consider when you think about the radius you should be searching in from your home.
