Manhattan Public Housing Recycling Outreach Coordinator

Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC), a non-profit in the Mayor's Office with an over thirty-year history of improving the environment in New York City, is interviewing qualified candidates for a new Manhattan Public Housing Recycling Outreach Coordinator position in the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education (OROE).

In order to meet the ambitious recycling goals outlined in the Mayor's Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan, the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education (OROE) has been formed within CENYC. The office focuses on waste prevention, composting and recycling outreach and education. Working closely with the Department of Sanitation, OROE's mission includes, but is not limited to:

? Promoting waste prevention outreach and education ? Promoting electronics waste recycling ? Assisting in developing and implementing additional waste prevention programs,

such as composting and building reuse programs ? Promoting household hazardous waste reduction ? Promoting recycling at public schools, housing authority projects, and other

locations ? Developing new and innovative programs to reduce waste and increase recycling ? Generally working to increase diversion rates and waste prevention throughout

New York City

Position Summary

This is a full time position funded for one year. There is a potential of longer term employment if funding is secured. The position offers the opportunity for a highly motivated individual with community outreach skills to promote recycling and waste reduction in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings in Manhattan. Under the supervision of OROE's Director, the Manhattan Public Housing Recycling Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategy to increase recycling diversion at public housing in Manhattan. The Manhattan Public Housing Recycling Outreach Coordinator will develop this strategy by working with NYCHA's Waste Management Coordinator and OROE's five borough specific Recycling Outreach Coordinators. Some of the duties and responsibilities shall include:

? Working with NYCHA staff, target buildings to conduct recycling outreach and education

? Working with NYCHA staff, identify impediments and obstacles to increased recycling at public housing in Manhattan

? Working with the Director to create and implement recycling plans for targeted buildings

? Conducting waste audits in NYCHA buildings

? Meeting with NYCHA tenants and building service personnel to promote recycling and waste prevention

? Recruiting and training volunteers in NYCHA buildings to promote recycling and waste prevention

? Attending community events and public meetings to encourage increased recycling and waste reduction in public housing in Manhattan

Candidates should be highly motivated and have community outreach experience. (Experience working in NYCHA developments is a plus.) Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be able to work well with diverse communities. We seek energetic people who have the ability to work as a team and are capable of setting and meeting goals. Additional qualifications include:

? Experience organizing and working with communities to effect change ? Strong oral and written communications skills, including public speaking,

information materials development and media outreach ? Experience in data collection, input and analysis ? Team player who works well with others as well as independently ? Second language skills strongly encouraged ? Ability to juggle multiple issues ? Willingness to travel throughout the city to meet with individuals and attend

community meetings and events. ? Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Salary: $38,000 plus benefits
