EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – REFRESHER – Spring 2019

CLASS DAYS/TIMES: 6:30-9:30 PM, Mondays/Thursdays; based upon challenge results

Special Note for those wishing to RECERTIFY:

Students have the option of challenging the practical exam and didactic portions of the course. This will be explained the first night.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Tuition $335: The course’s tuition will be paid by the state for those meeting the eligibility requirements (Paid professional ambulance technicians and/or volunteer fire and ambulance personnel - those actively working with a fire department or other DOH certified EMS agency in Chautauqua/Cattaraugus County have priority over other applicants and the tuition will be paid by the state).

ALL TUITION PAYMENTS ARE REQUIRED WITH THIS APPLICATION (Unless your tuition is being paid by the state due to your eligibility.)

Books/Supplies: REQUIRED: Emergency Care 13th Edition (ISBN 978-013-4024554) – APPROXIMATE COST – $136

Workbook – (ISBN 978-013-4010731) – APPROXIMATE COST– $76

A CPR course must be taken outside of class during the same semester as the class.

Who is Eligible to take the Refresher Course: Any current or former NYS EMT (not MET) is eligible to take the refresher course regardless of how many years it’s been since your NYS EMT certification expired. Previous EMT’s may not enroll in an original course.

*First Week of Classes:

• The first class session (Thursday, January 3rd) will encompass registration as well as a review of the significant changes over the past three years.

• The second class session (Monday, January 7th) will be the challenge written exam – can start at 5:30PM

• The third class session (Wednesday, January 9th) will be an optional practice night

• The fourth class session (Thursday, January 10th) will be the challenge practical exam

• A schedule individual to the student will then be handed out.

Attendance: Attendance at course sessions is based on challenge written test and challenge practical skill stations for those students selecting this option. All students who are active in EMS are encouraged to try and challenge. There will be a mandatory class for all students including those that challenge. 100% attendance is required for all students for any class session assigned.

Eligibility for State Certifying Exam: Students must pass all aspects of the course to be eligible to sit for the state certifying Exam. In addition, any unpaid balances owed to Jamestown Community College must be paid in full prior to any test date (Practical Skills Exam or State Exam).

Physical Condition: Some EMT training is strenuous. Applicants should consult their physician if conditions exist that may prevent them from full participation.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants MUST BE:

• Any current NYS EMT that is in the last 18 months of their certification period

• Any expired NYS EMT (not MET), regardless of when they expired.

• Physically able to function as an NYS EMT, meeting ADA requirements

• Able to read at least at the 11th high school grade level

• Those with criminal convictions of any type may not be allowed to be recertified, pending investigation by the DOH

• Not monetarily indebted to the college

The State Department of Health covers the tuition only for those applicants who are actively working with a New York State EMS Squad. All other New York State residents will be charged $335 and payment MUST be included with this application.

Note:

• Students can assume they are accepted into the class and should show up the first night. If there was an issue with their registration it will be handled the first night.

• The college reserves the right to exclude students who have previously been declared academically ineligible, or those who are indebted to the college. When there are more than 35 applications, enrollment may be assigned on a priority basis per guidelines established by the Chautauqua County EMS Council.

• Refunds - JCC refunds 100% up to three (3) business days prior to the start of the class or before the advertised deadline. Your refund will be issued in check form approximately two weeks after you drop the course(s). JCC does not refund via cash and does not credit a credit card transaction.
