She expressed her appreciation for being part of the Board and the school district leadership team. Mrs. Heineman welcomed Nanine McLaughlin as our Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development. Mrs. McLaughlin has been principal at the high school for the past 11 years and.Mrs. Heineman reported that this year’s graduation ceremony was beautiful. She thanked Ms. McLaughlin, Dave Perrotta, Kevin Steingruebner, facilities and maintenance, and everyone who worked so hard to put it together. It was a great community event and celebration.SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORTDr. Sinha welcomes Ms. McLaughlin and stated she is looking forward to having her at Central Office.The Class of 2019 held its Commencement on Saturday, June 29th. Two hundred seventy five students graduated; many with Advanced Regents Diplomas and Advanced Regents Diplomas with Honors. This was her first graduation and it was just beautiful. She thanked our high school administrators, custodial and clerical staff for tending to every detail in making the graduation ceremony so special for our students, families and our larger school community. There was a very smooth closing to the school year.Four of our schools have been designated as Recognition Schools: Garden City High School, Homestead School, Hemlock School and Locust School. These schools are among those in New York State that have high academic achievement, growth and graduation rates and have made progress during the 2017/2018 school year. A total of 562 school were recognized throughout the state. Both the Senate and Assembly released their respective houses' Bullet Aid allocations for school districts. Garden City will receive:$25,000 – from the Senate$13,000 –from the AssemblySummer Enrichment - this year our summer enrichment program will be through SCOPE. Currently, we have 668 students registered from K-9th grade for this summer. We have many course offerings both in two weeks, and one week options making it convenient for families busy summer schedules. STEAM based?course offerings such as Coding and Computers, Engineering with STEAM, Crazy Scientists and Woodworking are popular offerings this year. We also have many cooking classes, Arts and Crafts, fitness and sports programs for every grade level. We?have enriching?academic based courses such as Literacy Scavenger Hunt and?Fun with Math.? We offer music and arts programs such as?Spotlight on Theater, Summer Strings, and Lights, Camera, Action.?Dan Seid is overseeing the program.Camp Invention ended today. A hands-on program that encourages children entering kindergarten through sixth grade to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum inspired by some of the world's greatest inventors. We had 173 students this year. In addition, we had 7 Counselors in training and over 15 Leadership Interns. All the students and counselors are from Garden City. Changes in Non-Medical Exemptions for Vaccinations - On June 13, 2019, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation removing non-medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements for children. This means that all schoolchildren must now be vaccinated as required by the Public Health Law, even if their parents have religious objections to the vaccinations. The new legislation is effective immediately. Class Size – the second grade level enrollment is creeping up. We are working on it and will communicate to the Board. The CHOOSI app is ready to be launched in September for parents to use to order deli selections for their child in advance for lunch. High School Principal, Nan McLaughlin, (now our Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Leadership Development) was honored with the Administrator of the Year Award by the Nassau Counselors Association this week at a reception held at the Bethpage Heritage House.On the Agenda is a donation of $2,950 from the Friends of Trojans Soccer to cover the cost of transportation for the boys soccer team to travel to Indian Head Camp in August.Also on the Agenda is an agreement with an interim director of guidance.
