e6 3 SAINT PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL

Saint Patrick's Close, off Patrick St, D8 t. (+353)(0)1 453 9472 stpatrickscathedral.ie.

Over 800 years old, Ireland's largest church and the island's National Cathedral for the Church of Ireland was founded beside a sacred well where Saint Patrick is said to have converted pagans to Christianity. A small wooden church was built to commemorate this visit and a cathedral erected between 1200 and 1270 - a feat begun by the first Anglo-Norman bishop, John Comyn. Through years of decay and neglect, the building fell into disrepair but was restored by the Guinness family between 1860 and 1900. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels, was Dean from 1713-1745 and is buried near the entrance. A selection of Swift artefacts is on display including his epitaph, death mask, writings and parchment awarding him the Freedom of the City of Dublin. One of the Cathedral's most significant events was in 1742 when a combined choir with neighbouring Christ Church Cathedral gave the first public performance of Handel's Messiah. This strong singing tradition continues today with two sung services daily (except Sat) during school term - the only Cathedral to do so in Britain and Ireland. Perhaps more than any other building in Ireland, Saint Patrick's embodies the history and heritage of Irish people of all backgrounds from the earliest times to the present day. Which is why each year over 300,000 visitors and pilgrims visit the Cathedral and its Living Stones exhibition celebrating its place in the life of the city, its history and role in the future. Open March to Oct Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 9am-10.30am, 12.30pm-2.30pm, 4.30pm-6pm. Nov to Feb Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 9am-10.30am, 12.30pm-2.30pm. Adult 5.50, Conc. 4.50, Family (2+2) 15. Group rates also available.

E5 5 Christ Church Cathedral

Christchurch Pl, D8 Christ Church Cathedral is Dublin's oldest building, a leading visitor attraction and place of pilgrimage for over 1000 years. Renowned for its breath-taking beauty, magnificent architectural features and stunning floor tiles, it is also popular as a venue and plays host to a range of concerts and events throughout the year. Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims with our medieval tours of the Cathedral. Hosted by our experienced tour guides, don't miss this fascinating insight into the history of this magnificent cathedral, before climbing up to the bell tower to ring the famous bells! Guided tours incorporate the belfry and take place Monday-Friday at 11am and 2pm. Special fun trails for families are also available and themed drop-in craft activities take place at special times throughout the year. Winter Opening: Mon-Sat 9am-5pm Sun 12.30-2.30pm. Summer Opening: Mon-Sat 9am-7pm Sun 12.30-2.30 & 14.30 ? 7pm

G3 6 JAMES JOYCE CENTRE

35 North Great George's St, D1 t. (+353) (0)1 878 8547 jamesjoyce.ie

Dublin is world-renowned for its literary heritage and, in 2010, was designated a UNESCO City of Literature. Among its writing greats, James Joyce singularly captures the essence of the city in seminal works such as Ulysses, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Built in 1784 for the Earl of Kenmare, this fine Georgian building is dedicated to the life and work of Dublin's much-loved scribe. The Centre was founded by Senator David Norris and members of the Monaghan family, descendants of Joyce's sister May. Today its permanent exhibition comprises touch screens, video documentaries and room reconstructions, as well as original materials such as a copy of Joyce's death mask and the front door of No 7 Eccles Street, home to Ulysses protagonist Leopold Bloom. From May 2014 the Centre will also offer a free audio guide in English and a number of other languages. Themed Walking Tours (10/8) run Tues, Thur and Sat (April-Sept) and Sat (Oct- March) at 11am. The Centre also hosts an annual programme of events including a lecture series and June's Bloomsday Festival when Ulysses' aficionados relive the Dublin-based novel's events of 16 June 1904. Open April to Sept Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Oct to March Tue-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun (year round) 12pm-5pm. Last admission 4.30pm. Adults 5, Conc. 4.

Church St, D7 t. (+353)(0)1 872 4154, Luas Smithfield/Four Courts Built in 1685, on the site of - by some 600 years - the oldest church on Dublin's North Side, this Church of Ireland parish houses what must be the city's most extraordinary attraction. Due to an unusual combination of magnesium salts in limestone, the crypts beneath the church are without any moisture, resulting in the perfect preservation of those buried within. Four damaged coffins reveal their inhabitants, and the dungeonlike setting makes it quite a spine-tingling sight. The adjacent crypt contains the ornate coffins of The Earl of Leitrim's family as well as artefacts and coffins from the 1798 Rising and death mask of Irish revolutionary Wolfe Tone. The Book's name comes from the Abbey of Kells in Co. Meath where it was reputed to

have been (at least partly) written, though its exact origins remain unclear. In the 1650s,

the Book was moved to Dublin for safekeeping and presented to Trinity College Dublin's

t. (+353) (0)1 816 9538 malahidecastleandgardens.ie, DART Malahide

This magnificent 12th century castle is set in 260 acres of land and is one of the oldest castles in Ireland. It has been home to the Talbot family for nearly 800 years from 1174, when Richard Talbot, a knight of Henry ll, accompanied the king to Ireland and was given the"lands and harbour of Malahide"for his "war-like" services in the Anglo-Norman conquest. Eleven years' later the Castle was built as the family seat, and remained so until 1975, save for ten years when it fell into Cromwell's clutches. Today friendly guides and a brand new interactive exhibition help you explore its rich history and interior. Visit the Oak Room, Small and Great Drawing Rooms and the Great Hall before heading to the Walled Garden, home to some of the world's rarest plants. The interactive garden exhibition tells the story of Lord Milo Talbot ? the visionary behind this fascinating collection and the last Lord of Malahide who died in 1973. The Demesne has marked pathways, a children's playground, picnic sites, and sports facilities including 9-hole golf course. Back at the Castle, a gift shop and Avoca foodhall, caf? and retail store complete this enchanting daytrip. Find it 19kms north of Dublin on the DART line. Open daily 9.30am-5pm. Last guided tour of Castle 3.30pm (Nov-Mar). Adult 12, Child 6, Student 8, Senior 7.50, Family (2+2) 26 (2+6) 30.
