Anna Kindel (born , died of pancreatic cancer) married ...

Anna Theresa Kindel Brown

Anna (Annie when she was younger) Kindel was born October 1866 and died in 1924 of pancreatic cancer. On October 30, 1892 (in Denver?) she married Alexander Brown who was born May 2, 1862 and died February 28, 1929 of cancer. For most of their married lives they lived at 433 Franklin Street in Denver, Colorado.

Alex was born in Kilmaurs near Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and came to Colorado as a young man in 1882. Census data indicates that early on he had jobs as a painter in 1900 and a contractor in 1910 & 1920. In 1892 he and Mr. Schrepferman built shacks for miners in Cripple Creek, Colorado. When they returned to Denver from Cripple Creek, they bid on and won the contract to build Lake Junior High School. In 1899 he and his friend Conrad Schrepferman created a partnership, Brown-Schrepferman & Co., General Contractors, and contributed to the building and development of Colorado. Among the buildings they constructed were the Guggenheim Law Building at the University of Colorado, similar Guggenheim Buildings at Colorado State University, University of Northern Colorado and Colorado School of Mines, and Macky Auditorium at the University of Colorado. For many years, the firm was located at 240 Washington Street in Denver.

Anna’s son George remembered that she worked very hard keeping house for the family, cooking for 10 on a regular basis and raising the seven children listed below. According to census data, during the years at 433 Franklin, one or another Kindel sibling lived with the family, including Cecelia (Kindel) Scholl (widowed) in 1910 and Aunt Rose Kindel who lived with them for most of her adult life (1900, 1920, 1930). In 1910, Anna’s brother George J. Kindel and his family lived just up the street at 556 Franklin. Alex, Anna, and Rose are buried next to each other at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver in the Brown family area.

Children:

I) Charles (Chuck) Matthew Brown

Chuck was born June 13, 1894 in Denver and died August 13, 1973 in Denver. He was named after his mother’s younger brother Charles, whom she was very close to, and Matthew, Alex’s father. He was baptized a Catholic, but raised in the Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Manual High School in Denver and from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1918 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. Chuck also spent some time in the Army. Like his father and brothers, Chuck was an avid golfer. According to an article in The Rocky Mountain News, Chuck and his brother Jim learned to play in part while caddying at the Denver Country Club under the celebrated Tom O’Hara. Chuck became the favorite caddy of Gil Nichols, the club’s first professional. As a member of City Park Golf Club and the Wellshire Country Club, he played in many golf tournaments, winning the Solace flight of the Colorado amateur Championship in the 1920’S. As the eldest son, he went into the Brown-Schrepferman firm. On November 29, 1922 he married Jean H. Wilson (born November 19, 1897 in Denver, died November 11, 1985 in Denver) and they had one child. Chuck and Jean are buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, along with Jean’s parents John A. Wilson and Margaret F. Wilson. Jean’s parents came to Denver from Alton, Illinois.

Children:

Margaret (Peggy) A. Brown was born February 7, 1927. She graduated from East high School in 1944 and the University of Colorado in 1948 with a BA in History. While at college she was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. On June 15, 1948, the day after graduating, she married John Robert Wilson in the Episcopal Church. They lived together in married student housing which consisted of Quonset huts near campus at the corner of Folsom and Arapahoe in Boulder. For the first year of their marriage while John was completing his senior year, Peggy worked at the CU library. John graduated in 1949 from the University of Colorado with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a Sigma NU fraternity member. He had been in the Army and was at the Battle of the Bulge and spent some months with the Army of occupation. John became a partner along with Jim Brown, Jr. in the Brown-Schrepferman firm and took on many construction projects including the Music Building at CU. A sports fan from an early age with her father, Peggy had season tickets to the Broncos, Rockies and most importantly the Colorado Buffaloes for many years. She still attends the Colorado Buffalo games and is an expert at knowing everything about the players and the game. Her great memory of sports trivia and many other non-sports things comes from practice. As an only child, her father used to take her to games with him at a very young age. He’d give her the program and tell her that she needed to memorize the players and their numbers and positions so that she would know them for the next game. She did! He would enjoy showing off her skill to all his friends. He even called her “Son“.

Children:

• John (Butch) Roderick Wilson, born November 13, 1950 in Denver, married Carol Smith and had one child. They live in Louisville, Colorado. The Academy was founded as a school in 1892 by the Sisters of Charity and in 1969 was purchased by CU as a location for its Department of Theater and Dance and Continuing Education. In 1991 the University extended a long term lease to the Academy. In 1999 after much renovation, the Academy became a senior citizen living facility intended to support healing and learning. Butch continued the family tradition of construction at CU by spearheading the restoration of the building and subsequently became Executive Director of the Academy. After spending a number of years at the Academy, Butch is managing Concordia on the Lake, a senior living community in Littleton, Colorado.

II) James (Jim) Schuyler Brown

Jim was born September 26, 1896 in Denver and died July 23, 1957 in Denver of a heart attack. He was named after his paternal grandfather James, although it is unclear whether or not the name Schuyler came from his uncle’s family where Alex’s older brother James Brown married Jessie Schuyler. After graduating from Manual High School in Denver, Jim served in the Navy during WWI as a Seaman 2nd class and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas. Later he went to college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado and was very active in sports. He played on the CU football, basketball, baseball and golf teams where he was Captain of the Golf Team his senior year and led them to their first conference win during the first year that there was golf competition among colleges in the region. As a member of the football team all four years, he player all positions at one time or another. He was also All Conference Guard of the Basketball team, winning the state title all 4 years and Captain in his senior year. He joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and graduated in 1921. As the second son, he also joined his father and brother Chuck in the Brown-Schrepferman firm. Each founding partner of Brown-Schrepferman had agreed to take in their first two sons. Conrad Schrepferman brought in Alvin (Al) and Chester (Chet). From the 30’s – 50’s, Brown-Schrepferman built a number of buildings at CU and CSU, as well as schools, churches and other buildings in Denver, and roads and bridges throughout Colorado.

On June 1, 1923, Jim married his college sweetheart, Kathryn “Helen” Reading, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Helen, as she was called, was born April 5, 1899 in Galveston, Texas and died May 18, 1979 of a stroke ? in Denver. She was most likely named Helen after her father’s mother Hellena. The name Kathryn, which was not used, was likely after her mother’s sister Kathryn (Kate). Helen lost her parents by the time she was ten and moved to El Paso Texas where she was raised by her aunt, Kathryn (Kate) Waters Neill, along with her older brother Ernest. At some point in early adulthood, Kate, or “Auntie” as she was called by the family, contracted tuberculosis. At that time mountain air was thought to be beneficial to TB patients and they summered in the mountains at Crisman, Colorado with “Aunt Mag”. Later Helen attended the University of Colorado and studied home economics in 1922. She joined the Delta Delta Delta sorority and met Jim while at CU.

Jim and Helen had two sons, Robert Reading Brown (born March 21, 1926 at Mothers Receiving Hospital, part of Presbyterian Hospital) and James Schuyler Brown Jr. (Born June 19, 1930). From very early on, Auntie lived with Jim, Helen and the boys in Denver and was active in raising the boys, taking them on hikes and summering in the mountains. Jim Sr. was known for his outgoing personality and sense of humor. He was an avid golfer, learning the game as a caddy at the Denver Country Club, leading the CU golf team to the conference title, and later becoming a member of the City Park Golf Club, Wellshire Country Club and Cherry Hills Country Club. In 1926 he won the Colorado state amateur championship, defeating Pat Ingersoll of the Broadmoor Club in Colorado Springs. He also loved hunting with his brothers at the duck lake near Hudson, Colorado and trout fishing in the mountains. Helen taught 7th and 8th grade home economics for a while and was very active in the DAR (prior to the days of internet research). She was the Regent of the Colorado Charter of the NSDAR from 1947 to 1949.

They lived in a number of houses in Denver, eventually settling at 2055 Ash Street, near the Museum of Natural History and City Park. The boys enjoyed walking to the park and museum. After the boys were grown and Jim had died, Helen and Auntie lived in the Cherry Creek South apartments. After Auntie died, Helen lived at the Aspen Siesta Nursing Home on Yale in Denver. Helen and Jim are buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver in the Brown family area with Jim’s parents. Auntie, who born August 10, 1870 in Humboldt (near Independence), Kansas and died on April 26, 28 or 29, 1971 (I have things with 3 different dates on them) at age 100 in Denver, is also buried nearby at Fairmount Cemetery.

Children:

Robert (Bob) Reading Brown

Bob graduated from East High School in Denver, after attending for 3 and a half years. At that time, children who were born in the early part of the year started their school year in January or February rather than in the Fall. Thus in the Spring of their senior year, they had not completed a full senior year. They were permitted to leave high school and attend college without completing the Fall semester. If they did well during the first semester at college, they were awarded their high school diplomas without completing the last semester of their fourth high school year.

Following high school, Bob attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, graduating with a BS in Aeronautical Engineering in 1946. He was part of the Naval Reserves (V5 program & V12A flight program) and attended school year round, graduating from college in 3 years. He was too young to actively participate in WWII, but was stationed briefly at Glenview Naval Air Station north of Chicago before serving in Ottumwa Iowa as a preflight instructor in the Navy. After completing his military service in the Navy, Bob went back to CU and obtained an MS in Management in 1948. He remained in the reserves from 1947 – 1950, doing reserve duty at NAS Buckley in Denver and then at NAS Floyd Bennet in NY.

After getting his masters degree, Bob took a job at American Gas Accumulator in Elizabeth, NJ, working with Lester Simpson. Lester was a family friend whose mother had rented a room to Bob’s mother while she was in college in Boulder in the 1920s. Bob originally thought he would return to Denver and join his father’s contracting firm, but enjoyed what he was doing at AGA and stayed on. Eventually the company merged with Elastic Stop Nut Corporation and then Amerace Corporation, where he became President of Elastimold Division, Electrical Group VP and later the Group VP of Technology. While at AGA and Elastimold, he obtained a number of patents in the area of insulated connectors for underground airport and residential lighting, and for insulated connectors for use by utility companies in high voltage underground power distribution. As President of Elastimold, Bob was also responsible for establishing a joint venture, Fujimold, in Japan, and a manufacturing plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On September 9, 1949, Bob married Suzanne Alice Schumacher in Wilmette, Illinois at St. Augustine’s Church. They had their wedding reception at Michigan Shores Club. Sue was born September 25, 1927 at the Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois and grew up in Rogers Park, Evanston, Hyde Park and Wilmette. She graduated from New Trier High School in Evanston in 1945 and attended the University of Colorado, graduating in 1949 with a BA in Education. While at CU, she was a founding member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority on the Boulder campus. Bob and Sue had 3 children, all born in Summit, NJ at Overlook Hospital. Early on they lived at 234 Oak Tree Road in Mountainside, NJ and later at 201 Round Top Road, Bernardsville, NJ.

Like his father, Bob is an avid golfer and played every Saturday and Sunday at the Mendham Golf & Tennis Club for many years, as well as in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Sue taught kindergarten in Westfield NJ before her children were born. In addition to raising her children, Sue has been involved with AAUW and Camp Brett Endeavor, a fund raising group for an underprivileged youth summer camp.
