Police Officers patrol residential, industrial and commercial districts within the city, investigating crimes and assisting other public safety departments. Officers document their activities in written reports and statements, and provide court testimony.

The Oakland Police Department has excellent promotional opportunities, and a wide variety of assignments, including Patrol, K-9, Horse Unit, Helicopter, Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement, SWAT, Vice, Foot Patrol, and Investigations.

The City of Oakland is a diverse community of approximately 400,000, and is located across the bay from San Francisco. It is host to three professional sports teams, has the historic downtown area including the Jack London Square waterfront, and offers the scenic East Bay Regional Parks.

Minimum Requirements:

*Must be a High School graduate or G.E.D.

*Must be at least 20.5 years old by the time of the written exam (21 to attend the academy)

*Must be a U.S. citizen or legally eligible to work in the U.S. and be in the citizenship application process

*Must possess a valid CA drivers license by date of hire

*Cannot have any felony convictions or convictions which would prevent carrying a gun.

Salary and Benefits:

$65,868 to $83,021 annual salary range plus shift differential, numerous overtime opportunities, advance degree/certification pay, bilingual pay, choice of medical plans, and paid vision and dental. The Oakland Police Department participates in the 3% at 50 retirement plan; the City of Oakland pays the 9% PERS contribution.
