Let’s get Social

Unit 18: Personal and Social Relationships

LO 1. Know why relationships are important

LO 2. Understand how relationships can be developed

LO 3. Be able to use social skills in relationships

Task 1

Assessment Criteria

1.1 describe relationships with different people

1.2 outline the importance of relationships

As an introduction to the video, do a piece to camera that describes what is meant by relationships. Your speech should cover:

• What is a relationship?

• Give examples of different types of relationship?

• Who might Young people be involved in relationships with?

• What might get in the way of an effective one?

• How do good relationships help people in everyday life?

Make some notes to go along with your script that support your statements and hand those to your tutor.

Task 2

Assessment criteria

2.1 explain skills used to develop relationships

2.2 discuss different behaviours in Relationships

2.3 describe positive relationship skills and behaviours

a. Move on in your clip to explain the different ways you can develop a relationship, from meeting to keeping it going. Your explanation must include:

• A variety of skills, such as introductions, questioning, listening, showing feelings

b. Then with a partner, film four scenes that show the impact of different behaviours. Choose a topic for discussion but film it with two positive and two negative behaviours, (examples would be being friendly / unfriendly; being inclusive / exclusive; working together / being unco-operative). After the four scenes, discuss the impact of each behaviour, in particular describing the positive skills used.

Task 3

Assessment Criteria

3.1 use social skills to build and maintain positive relationships

3.2 show how negotiation can be used in relationships

With a partner now film an example of a positive relationship, make sure that your scene shows:

• Respect

• Varying viewpoints, attitudes and values

• How the pair work around those issues

Following the scene, again do a piece to camera that highlights the key elements of how this situation demonstrates effective negotiation. An example may be two friends talking about which film they should go and see at the cinema when one wants to see an action film whilst the other wants to see a comedy.

Tutor Information

This project can only be effectively carried out following delivery of all of the unit content. The more imaginative the approaches to delivery based upon the guidance within the unit specification the richer the quality of the materials that the students will produce.

Preparation for the assignment

Ideally build some use of video and role-play into the delivery activities to familiarise learners with the use of the media. A guest speaker to explain basic video editing software, Windows movie maker etc may be useful although many young people will have experience of using and manipulating video through their mobile technologies.
