Schoology Access Code - Oakland Catholic High School

AP BIOLOGY 2020-2021Mrs. KavanshanskyMost contact for us over the summer will work best via the Schoology group. This way you have a space to talk to me and other classmates. However, if you need a question addressed quickly please directly e-mail me as I receive notifications unlike on SchoologySchoology Access CodeG9NC-4QF8-T7GZ9Please join our group ASAP. Since we will not be meeting over the summer, I need a way to communicate with all of you. You can certainly contact me as needed. If you need assistance please call the high school main office.Mine is:mkavanshansky@Please note the following deadlines:Prior to the end of the week = join our Schoology group Due DatesS1= Tuesday June 30thS2= Tuesday, July 28thYou will not be able to receive a copy of the AP Biology text book prior to the fall. So we will need to use the text copy I downloaded to our group page. You will also need 6 zip grade sheets or you can print them from a link I will provide.I still need to ensure that the units listed in the assignment align with the original assignment. So, while I have attached an example… The assignments are not finalized. You will not receive a final copy of the assignment until the end of the 4th quarter. I will post it on Schoology.Welcome to AP Biology!!We have a lot to accomplish this year so of course you will need to get started by completing the summer assignments below. Just to warn you I do not accept late assignments! So please have them in on time. As you are an AP student, I expect this will not be a problem Moving on…A great deal of this course is based on you doing your job so that I can do mine! In other words, you must do the assigned student work (readings and questions) prior to class. We cannot discuss that which you have no opinion of or questions about, because you have no idea what we are discussing. I will expect you to have covered the information assigned independently and I will answer questions concerning the material. Then we will apply the concept you were to have covered by completing a lab. Absence of a lab will result in a deduction of 5 points from the total this is out of a need for your presence to complete the lab properly and the fact that many labs are not reproducible. I do not intend to cover the assigned material in class. Be aware, you will need to put in approximately 3 hours of personal time for every hour of class time. We will occasionally meet after school and/or over the breaks as needed. Most likely, this will be for time sensitive labs or possibly review sessions. If you do not have this kind of time, or do not intend on doing the work needed you may want to reconsider your selection. This course is intended to provide you with as much information as possible to prepare you for further studies in Biology. I also hope to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to do well on the AP exam you are required to take at the end of the year. This is a cost you have previously agreed to cover when signing up for the course. Biology is the study of life and life requires many systems to work simultaneously. As such, we will be covering different topics simultaneously and the ability to understand the workings of complex systems will require you to consider how each system affects the other. Basically, just because we end a chapter does not mean we are done with that material. You might see questions pertaining to something from a summer assignment on a test in the winter. Do not compartmentalize your understanding of the topics.I would like your parents to also read this and be aware of the commitment I am asking you to make. For many of you as seniors or juniors grades will play an important role for you when applying to colleges. This will not be an easy course so please do not expect an easy A. Your grade will be determined by homework, independent study assignments, lab reports, analysis assignments (essays), exams, weekly reading quizzes and a few projects. There is no extra credit for this course.I am excited to begin our year together next fall and I hope the summer assignments help you to prepare for our upcoming year! As always, if you have questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m most easily accessed through e-mail. I intend to check my e-mail once a week at the least over the summer. : mkavanshansky@Hope you have a great summer! See you soon! Sincerely, Mrs. Kavanshansky Please complete this bottom portion and turn it in to me via e-mail by the end of June(a picture is fine)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Please sign and date the bottom portion of this paper to indicate that you and your parent/ guardian have read the above information and agree to participate in the OCHS AP Biology course given the terms and conditions above. I also need your e-mail, grade level and status concerning anatomy (you will need to e-mail me this as well).Student name:signature: _____________________________/ ________________________________ date: ___/___/___Parent/guardian name:signature: _____________________________/ ________________________________ date: ___/___/___e-mail: _________________________________________________________ (you must check it or there’s no point to me having it!) Grade level for 2019/2020 school year : ___________Have you had anatomy? ________ / if not are you taking it next year? _______ This is only an introduction to the framework, but pretty informative on how the course will flow. Below are the four “big ideas” under which all of the topics we will cover will fit. Some topics will easily fit under more than one of the sections below. I feel it is important for you to know that the course was recently modified and has a much more increased emphasis on the application of biological concepts. So how does this translate for you?.... More real world applications and most certainly… more labs! This is a lab based course and yes we have a lab day once every 6 days but rarely will that be the only “labing” we will do! In order to learn from a lab it makes sense that you would have to actually complete it. For this reason, absence of a lab (whatever day of the cycle) will result in a deduction of 5 points from the total (typically 30 to 40 points) this is out of a need for your presence to complete the lab properly and the fact that many labs are not reproducible for a variety of reasons. This deduction will occur regardless of the reason for your absence. It is not a tremendous amount of points but will add up if you miss multiple labs. I think we can all agree, it is in no manner fair for someone who has not done the lab to receive the same credit as their peers who forged through the activity received.AP Biology Big Ideas BIG IDEA 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.BIG IDEA 2: Biological systems utilize energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce, and to maintain homeostasis.BIG IDEA 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes.BIG IDEA 4: Biological systems interact, and these interactions possess complex properties. Before you close this for the day… please put the due date for the summer assignments in your planner and determine times and a date that you will be bringing (or mailing) your completed work to the main office at OC. As for zipgrade answer sheets you will need 6 (100 question) sheets. They are the answer sheets for your assignments. You must use a number two pencil when completing them. They are what you will be mailing to/ dropping off at the main office prior to the set due dates for each assignment. Each assignment paper must have your name clearly written on it and should be in a large envelope or folder. If you google zipgrade and 100 the first link is the answer sheet. are directions for the assignments. You will need to access a site maintained by Mr. Krotec the AP bio teacher at central. On this site you will find a link to the questions you will need to answer and turn in after completing the assigned reading. The address is below. Be sure to use the username and password provided. After opening the website, open the folder titled ‘APbiologysite’. Proceed to the appropriate folders to access hw’s, ppts, notes, videos, etc. The web address is = biology Click on = User name is ‘student’ password is ‘biosphere’AP BIOLOGYSummer AssignmentS1: Summer assignment 1 = Tuesday June 30th (as of now by e-mailing pictures of all work in 1 e-mail submission)*Chapters 1-5, with special emphasis on chapter 5. An exam on this focus on biochemistry will be given around the first week of September. This knowledge, most of which is a review of chemistry and biology I, is necessary for the understanding of almost every topic in the AP curriculum. An independent study of this topic will facilitate the comprehension and performance of students throughout the intensive course. biology chapter 1-5 biochem.PDFComplete the multiple choice questions found on the web page provided above, they cover material found in each of the 5 chapters assigned. This is to be done on a zipgrade sheet. You should have picked these up in the main office of OCHS before the due date. The zipgrade sheet numbers do not correspond with the questions on the web page. Once you go to the web address provided you will click on “chapter 1-5 biochem.PDF” You will complete ALL multiple choice questions on this page for your first assignment. The first set of multiple choice questions has 9 questions so this will take up numbers 1 to 9 on your scantron answer sheet.
