Dear Oceanside Families and Community Members,

I am excited, as always, to welcome you and your children to a new school year! The 2017-18 year promises many new opportunities for students in literacy, number sense, computer technology, coding, business and career studies, STEM, history, community service, and citizenship to name a few of our upcoming initiatives. I hope you will take a look at the Goals and Objectives we have established for the coming year to learn more. They can be found on our website, .

We are rolling out a newly redesigned website to

enhance our communication with you and strengthen

the partnership between home and school. Our goal is

to provide a more current, user-friendly site for our school

This statement reminds us that every effort is meaningful when it is made with sincere desire for the best outcome. Whether it is our students striving to reach their fullest potential, our staff working hard to help every child succeed, our families supporting their children's personal and intellectual growth, or our entire community, banding together to give back in ways that strengthen ties and help our neighbors, every single drop adds up to a powerful and beautiful ocean.

In keeping with that ideal, we hope that you will use this calendar to stay involved with our schools by participating in the some of the many events and activities featured within. There are numerous ways to revel in your child's accomplishments, enjoy bonding time with your child and other families, and become informed and active via our Board of Education meetings, PTA, PASS seminars, DAWC events and much more.

Please join me in looking forward to a wonderful, fulfilling school year. Together we can be a mighty ocean, full of depth, strength and immeasurable beauty.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

The BOARD OF EDUCATION is a policy-making body which governs the school district in all educational matters. It has complete and final control over local school matters subject only to pertinent state law, regulations and decisions of the State Commissioner of Education, decisions of the courts, and the will of local residents as expressed in district elections.

The Oceanside Board is comprised of seven district residents who are elected at the annual school election, which is the third Tuesday in May. Two or three members are elected each year to serve three year terms which begin on July 1. Board members receive no salary or financial compensation of any kind for their services. They pay school taxes at the regular rate.

A candidate for the Board must be a qualified voter of the District and must file a nominating petition with the District Clerk not later than 30 days preceding the school election. Each petition must be signed by at least twenty-five qualified voters of the district OR two percent of the voters who voted in the previous election, whichever is greater.

The BOARD appoints the SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS to serve as its executive officer in administering its policies in the operation of the schools. The Superintendent is responsible for informing and advising the Board on all matters. The Superintendent's recommendations normally precede Board action on matters relating to recruitment and supervision of staff, selection of textbooks and instructional materials, development of curriculum and the operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
