(name of student)

1. Be prompt and dependable. If possible, please call at least one day in advance to let your Service Mentor know you will not be there at your scheduled time.

2. Bring a smile and your willingness to work.

3. Be honest in your approach and attitude.

4. Be patient when working with those you are serving. They may be having difficulties of which you are not aware. Your patience will work wonders.

5. Be respectful of diversity of culture, religion, and background. Practice correct pronunciation of the names if they are unfamiliar. Show interest in the cultures of those you are serving and learn more about those cultures.

6. Be flexible in responding to the needs of those you are serving.

7. Be confidential. Discuss issues with your Service Mentor, not with other volunteers, or in the community.

8. Be a positive role model in attitude, behavior, language, and dress. Let your conversations demonstrate respect for others, and avoid language that may be perceived as discriminatory, sexist, or offensive. Do not use your cell phone for calls or messaging unless it is an emergency or a situation of extreme urgency.

9. Take a self-directed, “leave a small footprint” approach to your participation. Help us build a positive relationship with our community through the Service Learning Project. The best kind of service to provide is low-maintenance help that will allow your mentor to maximize their focus on their work and the needs they are serving. Be willing to set aside your own needs and philosophies in order to provide service that makes a difference, but is not delivered on your own terms.

10. Apply the following strategies when working with the people you are serving:

|Listen to them |Call them by their first names |

|Be interested in what they say |Compliment them |

|Use kind words |Speak in a calm voice |

|Encourage their efforts |Support the work of your Service Mentor |

|Show them you like them |Start where they are successful and proceed into what they need to |

| |learn |

|Be patient | |

11. Ensure positive closure. If you plan on ending your service volunteer involvement before the end of your agreed upon term, please notify your mentor, and your instructor. At the time of departure, whether early or on schedule, it is very important that you have a time of closure with the people you have been working with to communicate that you have enjoyed working with them.

12. If your service involves working with children: Do not ask for a child's address or phone number. Do not share your address or phone number with the children. Do not make arrangements to meet with children off site or outside the parameters of your service assignment. Always work with children in public places under the supervision of teachers, staff or administrators. Do not work alone with a child behind closed doors, or enter children’s restrooms without another adult. Follow “safe touch” suggestions: volunteers do not initiate touching a child (hand-holding, hugs, lap-sitting), but may respond to child’s initiation of appropriate touch. Don’t bring gifts or food treats for individual children. Notify a staff member if a child confides about an abusive situation.
