OPENING THIS WEEK (24 September 2009):

• Overall awareness of each of the titles on tracking this week are at above average levels. However, Sony’s The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 is best placed to open week, as it is generating higher levels of interest to see it.

• 38% are aware of The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3, followed by 34% familiar with WB’s Laura’s Stern & Der Drache Nian, and 29% aware of Majestic’s Wüstenblume (Desert Flower).

• In terms of spontaneous awareness, 6% mention Wüstenblume, 5% Pelham 1 2 3 and 4% Laura’s Stern.

• However, Pelham 1 2 3 leads both the “definite” interest (38%) and first choice opening/release (11%) measures. Wüstenblume follows with an above average 29% “definite” interest and 7% first choice opening/release. At a below average level, Laura’s Stern registers 11% “definite” interest and 1% first choice.

• Among the quads, Pelham 1 2 3 easily leads the other titles among males, while Wüstenblume is likely to be competitive with Pelham 1 2 3 among females. In contrast, Laura’s Stern is likely to appeal to the family audience.

OPENING NEXT WEEK (01 October 2009)

• Next week’s releases have only seen incremental gains in awareness (of 1%-2% points). German moviegoers remain most aware of Sony’s rom-com The Ugly Truth (3% unaided, 21% total aware) and Disney’s Gangs (2% unaided, 20% total aware).

• However, while awareness of Universal’s TV remake Land Of The Lost is slightly lower than these two titles (at 1% unaided, 15% total aware), it is also likely to provide some competition with a higher level of “definite” interest to see it in comparison (at 29% vs. The Ugly Truth’s 23% and below average Gangs’ 19%).

• The Ugly Truth is the only title to post a normative level of first choice (2% vs. Land Of The Lost’s 1%). However, Gangs is looking competitive among the younger female audience in terms of this measure (at 4% first choice vs. The Ugly Truth’s 3% and Land Of The Lost’s 0%).

• The other three titles on tracking have relatively low awareness levels (6%-9%).

OTHER PRE-RELEASE TITLES:

• WB’s Männerherzen remains best placed of the titles at two weeks pre-release. An above average 30% are aware of the title and 4% pick it as their first choice. Both awareness and first choice skew female, peaking among younger females.

• Looking out to five weeks pre-release, both Sony’s Michael Jackson’s This Is It and Constantin’s Die Päpstin (Pope Joan) saw increases of 4%-5% in total awareness. Die Päpstin leads in terms of both awareness (3% unaided, 41% total) and “definite” interest (35%), while it is comparable with This Is It in terms of first choice (5% each).

• Seven weeks out, Sony’s 2012 easily leads the week with an above average 21% total awareness and strong interest measures (46% “definite” interest and 6% first choice).

Horst Schlämmer - Isch kandidiere!

Cinematic adaptation of hit the Germany TV comedy featuring Horst Schlammer, the popular character created by veteran TV funny guy Hape Kerkeling. The new film; "Isch kandidiere!" (“I'm running!”) features Schlammer – a sort of a kinder, gentler and German version of Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat -- running for the post of German Chancellor. Similar to Cohen, Kerkeling's comedy features impromptu, on-the-street interviews with real politicians, celebrities and ordinary people.

JERRY COTTON

Film based on the FBI agent created in the 1950s by the publishing house Bastei Verlag through a series of detective novels. Cotton is a cult figure whose adventures have been translated into 14 languages, read in 50 countries and sold 850 million copies. The novels were so successful that the FBI even had to point out that the agent was fictional and had never actually worked at the Bureau.

Laura’s stern und der drache nian

In the follow up to Laura’s Star little Laura is this time in faraway China on exotic adventures. There she makes new, unusual friends, like the friendly dragon Nian.

LENTAJAN POIKA

A reindeer boy named Niko dreams about flying like his father, whom he has never met. Despite suffering from severe vertigo, he sneaks out of his home valley to take flying lessons from Julius, a member of a Finnish family of rare flying squirrels.

Liebe Mauer

Sascha has joined the GDR army for three years for the sole purpose of gaining a place at medical school. Franzi is a bold young West German woman who is having difficulty paying her rent. When these two protagonists fall in love and arrange secret meetings, both the Stasi and the CIA believe they are seeing the beginnings of a revolt, while the Berlin Wall starts to tremble.

MÄN SOM HATAR KVINNOR (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)

16-year old girl Harriet Vanger disappeared without a trace on September 29th 1966. Nearly forty years later a journalist by the name of Mikael Blomqvist gets an unusual assignment. He is contacted by the industrial leader Henrik Vanger, who wants him to write the history of the Vanger family. The family chronicle is just a cover for the real assignment: to find out about what really happened to Harriet.

Nanga Parbat

Drama about the tragic Nanga Parbat expedition by the two Messner brothers in 1970, on which Reinhold Messners younger brother Günther died.

PETTSON OCH FINDUS IV

Animated sequel from Sweden featuring two lovable characters, Pettersson, the kindly, bearded man and Findus the cat. Based on the popular children's books by Sven Nordqvist.

TANNÖD

Based on Andrea Maria Schenkel's novel about the gruesome murder of a whole family in a rural community.

TEUFELSKICKER

Moritz loves football. It hits him hard when his parents split up and he and his rather eccentric, "no idea about football" mother have to move in with his grumpy grandpa Rudi - far away from his home, friends and his beloved football club. Despite many obstacles he succeeds in setting up a new team and signs them up for the upcoming championship where they will face their fiercest rival and really have to prove themselves as a team.

Unter Bauern

Unter Bauern recounts how some courageous farmers in the Muensterland region gave refuge to Marga Spiegel’s husband Menne, herself and her daughter under false names in their farmhouse between 1943 and 1945. The farmers succeeded in achieving the seemingly impossible: protecting the whole family for two years and saving them from deportation to the death camps without themselves having to pay with their own lives or being punished in other ways by the German government in those days.

WICKIE & DIE STARKEN MÄNNER

Vicky is a Viking boy who lives with his parents Halvar and Ylva in the small village Flake. He is a typical viking boy, but rather fearful. He is also not very strong but smart. One day he sails with the grown up vikings out to the sea and to experience a great and funny adventure.

WÜstenblume

Based on the world best-selling book DESERT FLOWER by Waris Dirie - the autobiography of a Somalian nomad, who was circumcised at 5, sold in to marriage at 13 and later became a supermodel. She is now the UN spokeswoman against circumcision.
