Peer Committee Dress Code StatementThe Corporation of the City of Cambridge expects a standard of dress, grooming and personal hygiene from employees that is professional, respectful and appropriate in our various work locations.Employees are in daily contact with fellow employees, clients, the general public, the business community and the citizens of our community. Maintaining a respectful workplace and good public opinion is vital to the success of the Corporation to manage the City of Cambridge effectively. In an effort to maintain and enhance a respectful workplace and good public opinion, employees in all locations should dress in good taste. The outward appearance of employees should cast a professional impression. It would be at the discretion of the Department Heads or their designates, therefore, to determine an appropriate and consistent dress code, so long as these determinations do not infringe on the personal rights of any employee. The following chart provides examples of appropriate and inappropriate clothing (this is not an exhaustive list):Appropriate dress code for men:Blazers, suits or jacketsDress or tailored pantsDress shirts with buttons and collars, golf shirtsTiesSweaters, cardigans, polo necksDress shoes–boots/shoes that are neat and clean, no opened-toed footwearCorporate wearAppropriate dress code for women:Blazers, suits or jacketsBlouses or shirts, scarvesDresses and skirts reasonable length (2-4 inches above the knee)Dress or tailored pantsSweaters, cardigans, and polo necksDress shoes–boots/shoes that are neat and cleanCorporate wearInappropriate dressJeans, T-shirts, sweat shirts, sweat pantsBeach wear, Hawaiian or loud shirtsClothing that is worn, torn, frayed, with patches, holes or inappropriate wordingEvening wearRevealing, see-through/transparent clothing or visible undergarmentsStretch or tight pants/slacks/ trousersFlip flops, sport shoes, Uggs-type footwear, Croc-type footwearYoga wear or exercise wearSummer Dress Code Dress shorts may be worn on regular dress days between May 1 and Thanksgiving. In both cases this is not an opportunity to wear inappropriate clothing as the commitment to a professional working environment still exists. Signage indicating Dress-Down Days/Casual Fridays will be displayed at each Customer Service Counter.Application of Dress CodeThis Dress Code Statement does not apply to fire department staff, those employees who are supplied clothing (uniforms) in accordance with their positions, or where appropriate dress is addressed in their collective agreement, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code. The Corporation recognizes that non-unionized outside workers (e.g. Public Works, CSD) may have flexibility given their work environment. The Corporation reserves the right to prescribe a specific uniform where it is deemed appropriate to assist employee identification and/or to contribute to a positive corporate image.Non ComplianceEmployees are responsible for exercising sound judgment and common sense for their attire and appearance, at all times.
