Craig Newmark started the service in 1995 as an email distribution list to friends, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area. It became a web service in 1996 and has expanded to other ranked categories. It began expanding to other U.S. and Canadian cities in 2000, and now covers 70 countries. In March 2008, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese became the first non-English languages supported by Craigslist. [5] As of August 9, 2012, more than 700 cities and areas in 70 countries had Craigslist sites. Some Craigslist sites cover large areas instead of individual metropolitan areas -- for example, the U.S. states of Delaware and Wyoming, Colorado Western Slope, california Gold Country and the Upper Michigan Peninsula are among the places with their own Craigslist sites. [7] Craigslist sites for some major cities, such as Los Angeles, also include the ability for the user to focus on a specific area of a city (such as downtown Los Angeles). Story Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, in 2006 Having observed people helping each other in friendly, social and trusting community ways on the Internet via THE WELL, MindVox and Usenet, and feeling isolated as a newcomer related to San Francisco, Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, decided to create something similar for local events. [8] In early 1995, he started a list of email distributions to friends. Most of the first ads were submitted by Newmark and were notices of social events of interest to software and Internet developers living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Soon, word of mouth led to rapid growth. The number of subscribers and assignments has increased rapidly. There was no moderation and Newmark was surprised when people started using the mailing list for non-event ads. [10] People who were trying to get technical positions found that the list was a good way to reach people with the skills they were looking for. This led to the addition of a job class. User demand for more categories has increased the list of categories. The initial technology met some limitations, so that by June 1995, Majordomo had been and the ersslist mailing list has resumed its activities. Community members began to request a web interface. Newmark recorded and the site went live in 1996. [10] In the fall of 1998, the name List Foundation was introduced and Craigslist began the transition to the use of that name. In April 1999, when Newmark learned that they were other organizations called the List Foundation, the use of the name was discontinued. Craigslist was incorporated as a private for-profit corporation in 1999. [8] At the time of these events, Newmark realized that the site was growing so fast that it could stop working as a software engineer and devote all its attention to Craigslist management. In April 2000, nine employees worked in Newmark's San Francisco apartment. [11] In January 2000, current CEO Jim Buckmaster joined the company as senior programmer and technical director. Buckmaster has contributed to the site's multi-city architecture, search engine, discussion forums, signage system, self-display process, homepage design, personal categories, and best-of-Craigslist feature. He was promoted to CEO in November 2000. [12] The website expanded to nine other U.S. cities in 2000, four in 2001 and 2002 each, and 14 in 2003. On August 1, 2004, Craigslist began charging $25 to post job offers on the New York and Los Angeles pages. On the same day, a new section called Gigs was added, where low-cost, unpaid jobs can be posted free of charge. [26] On June 19, 2015, eBay Inc. announced that it would sell its interest to Craigslist for an undisclosed amount and settle its dispute with the company. The move came shortly before eBay's planned spin-off of PayPal, and an effort to divest other units to focus on its core business. The service stated that the U.S. Congress has just adopted HR 1865, FOSTA, seeking to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) abuse online personnel illegally. However, the impeachment was applauded by many state attorneys general and other groups fighting sex crimes. Craigslist said there is some indication that those who have posted ads in the adult services section are displayed elsewhere. The sexual ads had initially cost $10 and were estimated to have grossed $44 million in 2010 if they had continued. [50] [51] In the four months following the closure, monthly revenues from sexual advertisements on six other sites (mainly Backpage) increased from $2.1 million to $3.1 million, partly due to higher prices. Signage can also alert craigslist staff to ad blocks that require manual monitoring or removal. [66] Under Craigslist's terms of use, the sale of pets is prohibited, although re-homing with small adoption fees is acceptable. [67] In January 2006, the San Francisco Bay Guardian published an editorial claiming that Craigslist could threaten the affairs of local alternative newspapers. [68] L. Gordon Crovitz, writing for the Wall Street Journal, criticized the company for using lawsuits to prevent anyone from doing what it did to the newspapers, contrary to the spirit of the website, which is billed in a non-commercial nature, public service mission, and non-corporate culture [69] This article was a reaction to Craigslist's lawsuits that Crovslist said were intended to prevent competition. Craigslist filed a complaint against Swedish luxury market site on July 11, 2012,[70] forcing the company to rename JamesEdition. In 2012, Craigslist sued PadMapper, a site that hoped to improve the user interface for browsing on housing ads, and 3Taps, a company that helped PadMapper get data from Craigslist, in Craigslist v. 3Taps. This led users to criticize Craigslist for trying to close a service that was useful to them. Non-profit Foundation In 2001, the company established the Craigslist Foundation,[71] a non-profit organization that offers free, low-cost events and online resources to promote community building at all levels. It accepts charitable donations, and rather than directly funding organizations, it produces in-person events and provides online resources to help grassroots organizations get started and bring real added value to the community. Since 2004, the Craigslist Foundation has organized eight annual conferences called Boot Camp, a face-to-face event that emphasizes the skills needed to connect, motivate and inspire greater community participation and impact. The Craigslist Foundation is also the Our Good Works, the organization that manages , an app that distributes volunteer opportunities on the web and helps people get involved in their communities. The Craigslist Killer (January 3, 2011),[73] a lifetime television film starring the story of Philip Markoff, who was accused of stealing and/or murdering several prostitutes he met through Craigslist's Adult Services section. Craigslist Joe (August 2012), a documentary about a 29-year-old man living for 31 days solely from food donations, shelter, and transportation across the United States, found via Craigslist[74] Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016), a comedy based on a real Craiglist ad placed by two brothers who wanted dates for their cousin's wedding that went viral in February 2013, which they then turned into a book, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates: And a Thousand Cocktails. Television The American comedy series Bored to Death revolves around a fictional Jonathan Ames (played by Jason Schwartzman) who publishes an ad on Craigslist himself as an unlicensed private investigator. The premise of the new girl sitcom focuses on a girl (Zooey Deschanel) who watches Craigslist to find new roommates. She misunderstands one of the lists and ends up moving in with three men, even though she was planning to find female roommates. The American television comedy sitcom Modern Family in the 10th episode of the third season Express Christmas mentions Craigslist when Phil Dunphy played by Ty Burrell buys a card signed Joe Dimaggio for his stepfather Jay played by Ed ONeill. Theatre In November 2007, Ryan J. Davis directed Jeffery Self's solo show My Life on the Craigslist at the New World Stages off-Broadway. The show focuses on a young man's sexual experiences on Craigslist and was so successful that she returned to New York at popular demand in February 2008. [78] Video Games 2008 Grand Theft Auto IV features a Craigslist parody called raplist, which can be viewed by the player through the internet functionality of the game in the game. (June 2008) 24 Hours on Craigslist tells the story of 121 people[3] who used Craigslist on August 4, 2003. Production Michael Ferris Gibson, an independent filmmaker, was inspired one evening in early 2003 to surf all categories of Craigslist San Francisco. Three hours later, he was inspired for 24 Hours on Craigslist. After spending another five hours writing a treatment, he contacted Craig Newmark about the idea. Two days later, Michael met with Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist, and Craig Newmark to discuss the concept of the film: creating a documentary entirely from Craigslist; the team, distribution and music would come from the site. Newmark chose the day from a hat from which to generate user messages that were used in the film. [4] The production filmed individuals and followed their stories and interactions with other users over the next three months. Film Festivals Several different versions of 24 Hours on Craigslist screened in different film festivals around the world.
