The individual in this position will serve as a member of a dynamic and talented team of entomologists, pathologists, foresters, and biologists that report to the Field Office Representative in Pineville. The team in Pineville has well over 200 years of combined experience serving the forest health needs of state, private and federal customers and we welcome the additional expertise created by this position. The Forest Health Protection Field Office serves customers in a support capacity, similar to Extension, with emphasis on teamwork and customer service. This position will focus on forest pathology in the western Gulf-states, including the following duties:Coordinates and implements all aspects of a complex major forest pathogen detection, evaluation, prevention, and control program. Exercises scientific judgment to conceive and conduct special evaluations to gain additional specific knowledge concerning disease biology. Provides site-specific, technical assistance concerning forest diseases to land managers. Organizes, plans, and conducts forest pathology-related outreach and training programs, presentations, and seminars.Works with research and other partners to develop treatment and outreach programs for novel forest pathogens or those in novel environments.The Alexandria Field Office is one of two Field Offices in Region 8 (Southern Region) Forest Heath Protection (State and Private Forestry). The office is co-located with the Kisatchie National Forest and the Southern Research Station; a unique arrangement that promotes interaction among the three branches of the Forest Service. The Field Office delivers both forest health and forest management programs to the six states in the western half of the Southern Region. The Forest Health staff also provides technical assistance to National Forests, as well as other federal lands managed by the National Park Service, Department of Defense, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Tribal Nations in the region.The large and diverse geographic area adds to the challenge and the excitement of working in a productive and highly regarded State and Private Forestry unit. Forests within the Field Office area vary from coastal plain to Piedmont to southern hardwoods. Early detection and response to fluctuating populations of native and non-native insects and diseases, cooperative pest detection surveys, and urban forest health are all part of Field Office responsibilities.
