With the start of softball season less than five months away, Allen County-Scottsville High School has named Kerry Harwood the interim softball coach for the 2013 season. The high school’s Site Base Council made the decision last Thursday.

“Anytime you have to hire a coach in mid-year it limits the options,” explained high school Principal Brian Carter. “We decided that what is best for our girls to win this year was to hire an interim coach. Coach Harwood has agreed to take over. Of course, he has the experience in coaching baseball and we think he will adjust to softball pretty easy. He will be building a staff and we believe this gives our girls the best chance to win this year.”

Harwood is no stranger to the diamond. As AC-S’s baseball coach for the past 16 years, Harwood has compiled a record of 267-200. His accomplishments include leading AC-S baseball to back-to-back region titles in 2005 and 2006. During the past several seasons, Harwood guided AC-S to consecutive district titles in 2009, 2010, and 2011 and runner-up efforts in 2008 and 2012. This past spring, the Patriots were 18-15.

Harwood, the athletic director at AC-S, emphasizes that his switch to softball is for one-year only.

“It’s late October and our softball program is getting behind as far as off-season conditioning, scheduling, ordering equipment, inventory and we needed to get something in place,” Coach Harwood said. “We posted the job several times, I talked to several assistant coaches that might be interested in moving up, and we have interviewed a couple of people. It was time that someone stepped up. I feel that in my role as the athletic director, this was part of my role so I decided to step up and fill the role. It’s not fair for the girls to be state champs two years ago and be without a coach in late October.”

Harwood points out that he will be serving in a “general manager” role at this point.

“I’m going to be working on the behind the scenes things,” Coach Harwood added. “We will start off-season conditioning and working toward getting our girls back in shape. Plus, we have a new field that will need work and care and we need to be doing that.”

Coach Rick Roberts retired in June. In July, assistant Mark Carter was hired as his replacement however he resigned in early September, leaving the tradition-rich softball program in search of someone.

“We have one of the most elite programs in the state,” Coach Harwood said. “We lost a hall-of-fame coach and three assistants. We were at a place where we needed someone to step in and get the ball rolling. I’m looking to do that. I am looking for assistant coaches that will help build this program and continue it in the right direction.”

AC-S fast pitch softball has an 18-year record of 507-176-4.The school has one state championship (2011), six regional titles (2000, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011) and 14 consecutive district titles from 1999 until 2011. AC-S went 35-5 last year and finished as region runner-up.

Tips for Injury Care

Ice or Heat: Which Should I Use?

Initial injury should always be treated with the RICE Principle.

R: Rest

Rest is necessary because continued exercise or other activity could extend the injury.

I: Ice

Ice decreases the bleeding and swelling from injured vessels because it causes them to contract. The more swelling that collects in an injured area, the longer it takes to heal.

C: Compression

Compression limits swelling which, if uncontrolled, could retard healing. Following trauma, blood and fluids from the surrounding tissues leak into the damaged area and distend the tissue, prolonging the healing process.

E: Elevate

Elevating the injured part above the heart uses the force of gravity to aid in the reduction of swelling.

If there is any doubt as to the severity of an injury, seek appropriate medical evaluation. Please remember to report any and all athletic injuries to the athletic trainer. If you seek treatment from a physician or at the hospital, please be sure to obtain written instructions of medical findings and give them to the sports medicine staff. This will allow us to provide the best possible follow-up care for our student-athletes and also allow us to know when the athlete is allowed to return to practices and competition.

Heat, if applied at the wrong time, could make conditions worse. Please consult your physician, physical therapist or athletic trainer before beginning any heat-related treatments.

Do not apply ice for longer than 20 minutes and do not fall asleep while icing. Skin irritation and tissue damage may result from improper or excessive use.

Please do not use chemical ice packs. Chemical ice packs may be colder than 32 degrees and can cause frostbite. Instead, use only frozen water as your source of cold in the treatment of injuries. Ice may be applied in the form of an ice bag (15 to 20 minutes), a frozen chunk of ice (ice cup) rubbed over the injured area (five to 10 minutes), or immersion in a bucket of ice water (10 to 20 minutes).
