Player Notes: Mickelson started at the age of one and a half, playing left-handed as a mirror-image of his father's swing. When he got serious about the game his father built a complete practice area in the backyard of their home in San Diego. Had a sterling amateur career, winning the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Championships and the 1990 U.S. Amateur, and was the consensus 1990 College Player of the Year; he was also the low amateur (T29) at '90 U.S. Open and a four-time All-American. Mickelson won the 1991 Northern Telecom Open as an amateur, becoming the fifth youngest winner of a PGA Tour event ever. . .Turned professional at the 1992 U.S. Open, and became the third golfer (Jack Nicklaus and Jerry Pate are the others) to win five events before age 25. Though he plays golf left-handed, is right-handed in everything else. . .One of only four players (with Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore) to win the NCAA and the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Has finished second on the money list five times but never won the money title ... Was beaten out by Tom Lehman in the final week in 1996 when Lehman won the Tour Championship. His four wins were the most won on the PGA Tour in 1996, matched that mark with four wins in 2000. In the generation of golfers in the last two decades, is the second best player behind Tiger Woods but just like never leading the money title in a year, Mickelson has never been higher than 2nd in the Official World Rankings.

Member of 1995, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 Ryder Cup Teams. Member of 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005 , 2007, 2009 and 2011 Presidents Cup Team. Member of 1989 and 1991 Walker Cup Team.

Won the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 2012 while paired with Tiger Woods in the final round. Lost to Bill Haas in a three-man playoff at the Northern Trust Open.

After that slid back to 130th in 1997.

Over the next couple of years his game had its ups and downs, the highs were a runner-up at the 1998 PGA Championship and a win at the 2001 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
