The license holder’s required background checks are up to date and on file at the Ohio Department of Education. (Find out more and how to stay up to date here.)Alternative resident educator license holders have successfully completed the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Assessment of Professional Knowledge licensure exam and the required additional professional education and reading coursework outlined for their license.Holders of either resident educator license who took the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA) but did not pass the assessment and/or did not complete focused mentoring, may only obtain a one-year license extension in order to retake the assessment or focused mentoring.Alternative resident educator license holders may not use extensions to provide additional time for meeting coursework and the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge testing requirements for professional licensure. They must complete these requirements during the license’s initial four-year duration. Please note: Holders of resident educator licenses or alternative resident educator licenses who already have obtained a total of two years of extensions to their licenses, and who have completed less than two years of the Resident Educator Program at the conclusion of that license extension, must renew the license and shall meet the renewal requirements instead of applying for additional license extensions. No more than a total of four years of extensions to a resident educator license or alternative resident educator license will be allowed. After a total of four years of extensions to a resident educator license or alternative resident educator license, applicants must either renew or advance the license. A license cannot be renewed until the year of expiration. These licenses may be renewed, according to state law for resident educator and alternative resident educator licenses when:The license holder has completed less than two years of the Ohio Resident Educator Program; orThe license holder has completed more than two years of the Resident Educator Program, but:The license has lapsed to the point that a one-year extension would not bring the license current; orThe license holder does not anticipate being able to complete the remainder of the Resident Educator Program within an amount of time that could be accommodated by a one-year extension. COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL OF A RESIDENT EDUCATOR LICENSENo pre-approval of coursework: Applicants do not need to seek pre-approval of coursework from the Ohio Department of Education. The department DOES NOT pre-approve coursework. Applicants should select coursework related to classroom teaching and/or area of licensure. Accreditation: Coursework must be completed at an accredited college or university. To verify accreditation, check with the college or university directly or check here. Click here to find accredited institutions approved to offer Educator Preparation programs in the state of Ohio.Dates of coursework: Applicants who wish to renew their licenses must have completed coursework after the issue date of the license they wish to renew.Course requirements for currently expiring licenses: Complete three semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching and/or area of licensure from an accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education. Coursework needs to be completed prior to September 1 of the year of expiration of the license to be renewed, or the renewal requirement increases to six semester hours.Course requirements for licenses that have lapsed for up to five years or longer: Complete six semester hours of coursework related to classroom teaching and/or area of licensure from an accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education.PLEASE NOTEAlternative resident educator license holders: These individuals may not use a renewal to provide more time to meet additional coursework and the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge testing requirements for professional licensure because they must complete these requirements during the alternative resident educator license’s initial four-year duration. License holders with reading or phonics limitations: Educators requesting an Early Childhood, Middle Childhood or Intervention Specialist licensure must successfully complete at least 12 semester hours of coursework in the teaching of reading. This coursework must include at least one separate course of at least three semester hours in the teaching of phonics in the context of reading, writing and spelling. Educators must complete coursework requirements through an accredited college or university. Educators who completed their educator preparation program out-of-state will not have met this requirement, so the Department will issue a license to the educator with the limitation placed upon it to complete the reading coursework requirement prior to the expiration date of the license.Ohio law requires that you complete all required coursework in the teaching of reading before renewing and/or advancing your teaching license. The limitation will be removed from your license when you provide a transcript from an accredited college or university that provides evidence that you successfully completed the requirements.
