TOSU-HT Board Meeting

August 13, 2015

The third meeting of the board for 2015 was held on August 13 at 6:30 at Paul’s Deli’s New Town location. In attendance were President Mike Chema, Past Presidents Jim Zinn and Rick Lodwick, Vice-President & Community Service Chair John Harris, Membership Chair Larry Tingley, Student Recruitment Chair Lisa Schmidt, invited members Gary Balogh of What’sUpWilliamsburg/Richmond magazine and Lynn Miller, Edward Sutelan, winner of the club’s 2015 scholarship, and Secretary Jim Wallace.

President Mike Chema called the meeting to order and the minutes of the past meeting were approved. Mike distributed new business cards for the club, which are available in vertical and horizontal designs to members on request.

Lisa Schmidt presented the Treasurer’s report on behalf of Treasurer Mike Schmidt, who was out of town. Lisa distributed a spreadsheet showing the current financial condition of the organization (scan attached), and several items were discussed. Current funds balance is $9,325.81. Lisa noted that we may need to determine the best way to utilize the fund’s balance, which exceeds our current budget for the year by $2,360.98. Alternatives such as increasing scholarship funding or starting to set aside funds for an endowed scholarship, were discussed. No decision was made.

On behalf of Fundraising and Sponsorship Chair Jim Zinn, Mike Chema called on Steve Sirles for a brief presentation on Innovative Screen Solutions, which is a $250/yearly Buckeye Leaf Sponsor and is located at 8105 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg, VA 23185. Steve described the company’s products and distributed an information packet.

Gary Balogh then discussed an offer from well-known local golf fundraiser Darrell Mitchell to put on a fundraising golf tournament for the club in the time frame of May 2016 at Stonehouse. Several points were discussed, including any investment required by the club (there is none), and the group generally agreed to proceed.

Gary also noted that he had discovered a local gymnastics academy, World Class Gymnastics, that has sent four recent scholarship athletes to OSU’s Women’s Gymnastics Team. Gary indicated that he and Mike had toured their facility off Jefferson Ave. in NN, which he described as outstanding, and met with the owner, Tami Elliot Harrison, a former Miss Virginia 1989, who recommends Ohio State to her athletes for consideration. Especially since Tami’s daughter, Taylor, is a class of 2014 Sophomore on the OSU’s Women’s Gymnastics team. Gary and Mike suggested linking up with her and possibly OSU Coach Carey Fagan for an event in the future. Several issues were discussed including compliance issues, but it was agreed that if everything can be worked out, that Tami Harrison should be considered for future club programming activities, possibly including Charter Day, depending on the results of Mike’s meetings in Columbus described below. The group expressed a preference that Charter Day focus on one presenter and theme.

Mike noted that Gary had agreed to include the OSU fact card insert, O H I O, for potential students in the Summer 2015 issue of What’sUp. Edward Sutelan noted that this insert, which lists web links for viewing virtual tours and personalizing students’ majors, was a significant influence on his decision to attend OSU.

The final fundraising item was an offer to Mike Chema from New Life Art to donate 25% of the receipts from member purchases of artist Daniel A. Moore’s new lithograph commemorating the 2015 National Championship football game. Information is available at . Mike has asked that information be sent to club members via e-mail.

In the absence of a permanent Programs and Development Chair, Jim Wallace and Mike Chema continue to work together on this area. Jim led a discussion of our 2015 Charter Day held on May 4 at Governor’s Land featuring world-renowned OSU neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Rezai, Director and CEO of the Neurological Institute at the University’s Wexner Medical Center. Comments were universally positive, noting such factors as first-rate venue and food, that is was a good idea to have a new topic other than sports to present the full range of excellence at OSU, and the outstanding presentation and new information provided by the speaker, Dr. Rezai. Mike has scheduled 2 appointments on September 23 when he attends the club leadership conference on campus to discuss a possible Charter Day speaker and other programming for next year. He is scheduled to meet with Anil K. Makhija, Dean and John W. Berry Chair in Business at the University’s Fisher College of Business, and OSU Women’s Gymnastics Coach Carey Fagan, 2012 National Coach of the Year.

Membership Chair Larry Tingley reported on membership status. There are currently 117 paid members for 2015, including 2 who have also paid for 2016. Members who have not done so should mail their annual dues to Larry Tingley at 4615 Beacon Hill Dr, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

Student Recruitment / Scholarship Chair Lisa Schmidt introduced this year’s scholarship winner Edward Sutelan, and we discussed his college and career plans and how he decided to attend Ohio State. Lisa noted that she will need volunteers to staff 2 career fairs, the Hampton College Fair on Wednesday, October 28, and a local fair for Williamsburg / JCC schools either the Tuesday before or Thursday after. The unfortunate timing of our local fairs was discussed, in view of the University’s November 1 deadline for applications for early admission and financial aid, meaning our efforts are primarily focused on students other than seniors. Anyone interested in College Fair recruitment should contact Lisa Schmidt. To represent the university, members must be certified through a short and informative online training course.

Community Service Chair John Harris reported no new activity this month. Past President Rick Lodwick noted that there are always service opportunities available in the community generally. He noted that the local Kiwanis Club’s Annual Shrimp Feast will be held September 12 this year and volunteers are needed. Any interested members should contact Rick directly.

Dick and Deb Shepherd were out of town and could not give a Communications report, but asked that members check our updated website osu-, especially coverage of BuckeyeBuzz in the July-August issue of the Ohio State Alumni’s national magazine and the recognition of Tom and Cindy Gillman.

Mike noted that he will receive the club’s allotted 30 tickets for the OSU-Virginia Tech game soon and said he will schedule a time for those who have purchased them to pick them up possibly at the Brickhouse Tavern or at Gary’s & Mike’s work location: The Benschoten & Carter Insurance Agency, 645 Penniman Rd. Williamsburg.

Members Julie Borders and her husband Steve made brief comments about the variety of National Championship and other OSU commemorative cups sold through her business, Tervis, 447 Prince George Street, Shop D, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

Several high quality samples were distributed.

The final order of business was a discussion and handout by Lynn Miller of the service at Arlington National Cemetery on September 11, 2015 at 1:00 for CDR, US Navy, Edward M. Miller, a former club member. Members were invited to attend. The family has made arrangements for a reception at the Fort Myers Officers’ Club, and group rates for guests at the Residence Inn (Marriott) in Arlington. To RSVP or for questions, contact Lynn at lrmiller4@, son Bryan at socker356@, or Daughter Laura at Laura.miller418@.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
