Congratulations on completing your licensure program! It is now time to apply for your license. Please follow the directions below and use the links below to ensure you are applying for your license correctly.

Steps to Applying for your Ohio License

A few tips before you get started:

? Please apply within 1-2 weeks of graduation. License application cannot be approved until after graduation.

? Your session will time out after one-hour. Be sure you have everything you need with you! ? Be sure you provide accurate and complete information. The system will not allow you to

submit your application without all required information. ? Your application will auto-decline after 60 days, it is essential to be thorough and complete. ? You can return to the My Applications page to check on the status of your application. ? Once your license is approved through ODE, a PDF version will be available for download. ? It can take up to 30 days for your license application to be reviewed, verified, and approved or

Applying for

an out-of-state license

Congratulations! As you approach the end of your program, you may plan to move out of Ohio to teach. Here are some steps to make the transition easier and more beneficial to you now and in your future.

Steps to Out-of-State Verification

1. Apply for your Ohio Department of Education license, first. Even if you plan on teaching out of state, obtaining your Ohio teaching license will help in transferring your license now and in the future. Failure to get your license upon completion of the program could lead to unexpected challenges.

2. Review the process for transferring your Ohio license to the state in which you are going to move. Find the state you are interested in transferring your license:

3. Most states have a Verification form to complete. After completing, send to the Office of Accreditation, Placement, and Licensure (APL), edprep@osu.edu for completion and signature.

4. Please allow at least two weeks for your request to be verified and the form to be completed by APL.

FAQs to Applying for your Teaching License

? How do I apply for my license? Apply on-line at

? What is the cost to apply for my license? The cost to apply for your license is $160

? I need a current background check, how do I know if it is current? It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure their background check is current when applying for a license. If you need to complete a background check, please visit your ODE SAFE account, click on background check.

? I've submitted my license application to Ohio State, what is the process for approval? Upon completion of internal processes, graduation, and notification of license application, your records will be reviewed. If you meet all requirements and the application is accurate and correct, you will be recommended for license usually within 30 days of submitting your application.

? I've submitted my application and my SAFE account is saying I need an Ohio State signature, what does this mean? Your license may still be in review or internal processes may not yet be completed.

? Why was my application declined? Applications can be declined for a number of reasons, such as applying for the incorrect license, incomplete information, or not meeting all licensure requirements. You will receive an email with a specific explanation as to why your application was declined.

? How do I add an endorsement to my existing license? The applicant should log on to their SAFE account, and click "RENEW" in the My Credential box. Here, you are able to advance, transition, add an area, extend an RE, or print a credential. When the My Credential page appears, select the license you wish to add the new credential to. A drop down menu will appear next to the license asking if the applicant wants to renew the license or add an area. Select "add area" and select the endorsement you wish to add.
