2020 Ohio Major Employers

The Major Employers Report is a ranked list of the 100 largest corporations and organizations in Ohio. The ranking is based on a reported or estimated total headcount located within Ohio. The report also includes where the company is headquartered as well as the sector of its principal activities. There are two additional tables focusing on the largest manufacturers and financial institutions. It is important to recognize that business structures are dynamic and in constant flux. Each listing is a result of either information obtained from the company, estimation based on publicly available information, or figures from various public sources.

Summary of Ohio Operations Ranked by Employment

The Cleveland Clinic (1), a national and international healthcare destination, has the largest employment headcount (52,800) of Ohio's private sector employers.

Wal-Mart (2), with 171 retail operations and seven distribution/ fulfillment centers, has the second largest employment headcount (50,400) of Ohio's private sector employers.

Other national retailers employing significant numbers of Ohioans include Kroger (3) at 35,950, (9) at 23,500, and Giant Eagle (11) at 20,450 workers.

Through mergers and acquisitions, many other hospital groups have been propelled onto the largest employers list. Mercy Health (aka Bon Secours Mercy Health) (5) at 32,300, University Hospitals (7) at 30,650, and OhioHealth (8) at 30,000 are all examples of growing hospital/health networks.

Honda Motor Co (16) employs 13,200 Ohio workers and is recognized as Ohio's largest manufacturing employer (employment totals include administrative, R&D, and distribution workers). Proctor & Gamble (30) is second with 10,000 employees, and conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway (32) ranks third. Honda Motor is the largest motor vehicle employer followed by Ford Motor (49) at 6,850, Ford Fiat Chrysler (50) at 6,800, and General Motors (78) at 4,150.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (6) near Dayton employs 31,300 workers. Approximately two-thirds of this total are civilian workers. At 8,145 acres, the Air Base is considered the largest employer at a single site in the state.

As a major financial center, Ohio has significant operations of JPMorgan Chase (10) employing 21,000, Nationwide Mutual Insurance (14) with 14,000, Progressive (18) employing 12,650, Huntington (26) at 10,500, and Fifth Third (41) with 8,050 workers.
