Special News from the Athletic Department

We look forward to the start of spring athletic season. Track and field, baseball, lacrosse, softball and boys’ tennis all compete during the spring months!

Our winter athletic season was filled with championship and outstanding performances. Wyoming captured Cincinnati Hills League (CHL) Championships in boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, and boys swimming. Wyoming currently leads in the CHL All Sport Trophy standings.

In swimming, our boys’ team finished 3rd in the state finals lead by senior Jonathon Rutter’s 2 state championship swims (100 breast stroke and 200 IM). Jonathan was named CHL Swimmer of the Year and Dave Elliott was named CHL Coach of the Year. Jonathan will graduate from Wyoming as a four time school record holder.

In girls’ basketball, Wyoming finished the season 22-2 and CHL Champions. Sophomore Ashli O’Neal was named CHL Player of the Year and Head coach Gerry Lackey, who captured his 400th career victory during the season, was named CHL and AP Division II State Coach of the Year.

Jeremy Smucker, a junior bowler, qualified for the District finals leading Wyoming to an 11-5 season.

Our boys’ basketball team finished the season with an impressive record of 22-4. Senior CHL Player of the Year and SW District Player of the Year, Ahmad Frost lead the Cowboys to a CHL Championship, Sectional Championship and District Runner Up finish. Head Coach Matt Rooks was named CHL Coach of the Year and SW Division II Coach of the Year.

Ike Palmer was crowned CHL Champion in wrestling and qualified as an alternate for the OHSAA state finals.

We welcome Tom Crawford as our new girls’ lacrosse coach for the spring season.

Special thanks to the Wyoming Boosters who do so much behind the scenes to ensure our student athletes have the resources needed to reach our full potential.

On Wyoming!

2013-2014 Mock Trial Team

The WHS Mock Trial Team had another good season this year. We had a fairly young and inexperienced group starting out in October, but by January we had three seasoned teams of attorneys, witnesses and bailiffs. The growth and improvement of our team members was fun to watch as we made great strides throughout the year. Our team members put in an impressive amount of work, giving up their Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons for four months to learn the case and write their arguments. The case this year was a temporary restraining order hearing pitting a school’s administration against its students over the right to protest a new corporate sponsorship of the football stadium.

We had some impressive performances down at the Hamilton County Courthouse for our scrimmage and then at our district competition. Unfortunately, we had some really bad luck in who we were matched up against. All of our teams faced extremely tough competition at the district competition. Our less experienced teams fell to very experienced teams and our experienced team narrowly missed advancing to the regional competition. David Moody delivered an excellent performance and came away from the competition with an Outstanding Attorney Award. We are proud of all of our members and look forward to another great season next year.

Wyoming Latin Club Goes to State

On March 7th, a total of forty-one Latin students from the high school and middle school, accompanied by Latin teachers Todd Wegenhart and Samantha Frodge, went to Columbus to join over 800 other students, sponsors and chaperones from around Ohio for a weekend of contests, competitions, games, spirit, and fellowship at the 63rd Ohio Junior Classical League Convention.

The combined effort of all of our students enabled Wyoming to do very well in the rankings of the annual contest,

this year finishing in 6th place out of over 30 schools competing! In the decades of competing in the OJCL Convention, this is Wyoming’s best ever performance!! Highlights of our weekend included:

• Club Skit, written by our middle school students and performed by a team from both the middle school and high school, was judged 3rd in the state;

• Club Music Video, with original music written by Zach Lower, received a Good ranking;

• Club Commercial, produced by several of our seniors, received a Good ranking;

• Club Publication, edited by Anna Guan, received a Superior ranking;

• First place individual awards were given to Jeffery Bonner, Matthew Bonner, Grace Crawford, Gwyneth Fletcher, Megan Levy, and Julia Stumbo for their excellent projects;

• Best in Show awards were presented to Matthew Bonner for 2D Art, Julia Stumbo for Crafts, and two Best in Show awards went to Vera Bostwick for her Jewelry and Sculpture entries.

• Wyoming graduate Maddie Briner was elected to serve a second term as Ohio Senior Classical League Editor

Our accomplishments overall would not have been possible without the hard work and energy of all the students that participated and gave up hours of their time in planning and making projects. Participating this year from the high school were seniors Colin Burke, Kelly Cholvat, Grace Crawford, Andy Donnelly, Maggie Ebling, Anna Guan, Marie Lippert, Zach Lower, Daria Oberholzer, Michael Smith, Matthew Viens; juniors Vera Bostwick, Asa Pranikoff, Julia Stumbo, Laura Warner; and sophomores Matthew Bonner, Audrey Eyman, Thomas Harmon, Maddie Henke, Michael Gibson, and Megan Levy.

Also participating from the middle school were Jeffery Bonner, Grace Brack, Campbell Burke, Daphne Constantinides, Alex Easton, Gwyneth Fletcher, Shelby Fritz, Jodi Gibson, Olivia Grady, Sam Hunter, Anna Ives-Michener, Isabelle Jones, Lauren Longman, Haley Mailender, Dagny McCullumsmith, Sam McCullumsmith, Anna Oestrich, Sophie Walton, Walker Weekley, and Cierra Wingert.

Special thanks go to Daria Oberholzer and Julia Stumbo, our club presidents, who led us not only at convention, but also in planning and preparing for it as well. We also want to thank Mr. Constantinides and Wyoming graduate Luci Simon who joined us for the weekend and were indispensable as chaperones.

The theme and dates for next year’s convention have already been announced!! Latin parents, mark your calendars for the 2015 convention from March 6-8. We’re also looking forward to having several students attend the National Junior Classical League Convention, hosted this year at Emory University in Atlanta from July 28 to August 2!

Icarus, a High School Publication

As the school year begins to wind down, the staff of Icarus is starting work on a quality publication featuring student literature and art. Icarus was founded by students 26 years ago and continues to be student-designed and produced. It is distributed free of charge to every Wyoming High School student before the end of the school year.

In order to keep providing every student with a complimentary Icarus, we need the support of both advertisers and patrons who believe it is worthwhile to provide this yearly showcase for writers and artists. We would appreciate your support for this year's Icarus: any level of support is welcome. Please mail your check (made payable to Wyoming School Fund) to Wyoming High School Attn: Icarus 106 Pendery Avenue, Wyoming, OH 45215. To show our gratitude, we would like to include your name on our Patrons page. (Please print your name as you would like it printed in Icarus.)
