f r Elijah, the Widow &

Oil

? 2 pitchers

? Blue coloring for water

? Drinking water (enough to give water to each

camper

? Cups (1 per camper)

rr Fill one pitcher with blue water 1/4 of the way up. Fill the second pitcher with drinking water until it is full. Make sure to have a little left over just in case you need more.

ru Take a pitcher of blue colored water, only 1/4 of the way full. Ask the campers how many cups they think the pitcher of blue water will fill. Then pour what you have and it should fill less than 1 cup.

DRAG BIG This is not enough water for everyone to drink. If everyone in our group wanted water, we wouldn't have enough to give them. In our story today, the oil should have run out, but it didn't. It filled ALL of the jars the widow collected. Now take your pitcher of drinking water and begin filling their cups with it. We didn't have a miracle like God did in our story today, but we are able to fill our cups and provide for our needs with the water that God has given us. There are people around the world who don't get to have clean drinking water. We truly are blessed.

f r Oil & Water Droplet

Painting

? shallow pan (several for campers to use)

Copyright ? 2017 Camp Hope

? cooking oil ? water ? liquid watercolor (or water dyed with food

coloring) ? heavy paper (sketch paper or watercolor paper

is even better) ? drying rack ? eye droppers (several for campers to share)

ru Place a small amount of plain water in the bottom of a shallow, rectangular baking dish. Use an eye dropper to maker droplets of oil in the water. We recommend the leader doing this otherwise you might end up with a lot more oil than you want. If that happens, then the paper will only pick up oil and no watercolor.

You can choose to slightly mix the oil and water for a more marbleized effect or you can leave the oil in droplets on the water. Lay a sheet of heavy sketching or watercolor paper on top of the water and oil, then pull it out and place it on a drying rack or large baking sheet to dry.

YOU CAN STOP HERE...OR TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER To bring about even more vivid colors, you can instruct the campers to use the eye droppers to drop even more liquid watercolor on the paper. Everyone will discover that the liquid watercolor will not be absorbed where the oil is on the paper.

DRAG BIG Our story today is all about oil. Who ran out of oil? The Widow. What did she have to do? She had to trust what Elijah said and believe that God

would provide for her and her son. The widow accepted what Elijah said. Our theme for today is Agents accept. Now your artwork will remind you of the trust the Widow had in God and Elijah.

Another suggested experiment: We found another experiment that looked cool, but didn't know if it would work or how to really explain it well. You can go to: images/ stories/TeachingMinistry/BibleClassResources/ The_Widows_Jar.pdf to see it and see if your group can do it.

best, like parchment paper)

message started, with the tip of a lighter. The message will ignite and burn in smoldering fire until it is completely revealed. If you were careful to only light the edge of the message, the rest of the paper will remain intact.

DRAG BIG What did our message say? Could you see it before we lit it on fire? How is this like our story today? God lit Elijah's altar on fire even with it being drenched with water.

rr Make sure to have water and/or a fire extinguisher handy. Practice, practice, practice this before campers come. Make sure your Director is okay with this experiment. Maybe go outside to do it. Make sure to do steps 1-3 ahead of time.

f r Scratch Art Day 1

? 8.5X11 card stock (1 per camper)

? Crayons

? Black tempura paint (enough to cover

everyone's paper)

? Dish soap (to clean the brushes)

? Paint brushes (1 per camper if possible)

? Smocks (1 per camper for them to wear to

protect their clothes)

ru 1. Mix potassium nitrate into a very small amount

of warm water to make a saturated potassium nitrate solution. It is fine if there is undissolved potassium nitrate. 2. Dip a paintbrush, cotton swab, toothpick, fingernail, etc. into the solution and use it to write a message. You want to start the message or design at the edge of the paper. The lines of the message must be continuous since the fire will travel from the edge of the paper along the writing. You may wish to re-trace the message to make sure there is potassium nitrate on all parts of it. 3. Allow the paper to dry completely. Your message will be invisible. It's important you remember where you started your message. 4. Touch the edge of the paper, where the invisible

rr Pour black paint into a bowl and add a few drops of dish soap to the paint. This makes the paint adhere to the crayons. Place crayons around table for the campers to use.

ru Give each camper a piece of card stock. Make sure their name is on the back of the card stock. Have them color their paper (on the side without their name) completely full of bright colors. DO NOT LEAVE ANY WHITE SPACE.

Make sure they press hard to cover the paper. If they think they are done, make them continue to color the piece of paper. You cannot have too much color.

When there is about 7 minutes left, have them paint their papers. Give them a brush and have them cover their drawing with black paint. The paintings will need to dry over night. The campers will finish their project tomorrow.

DRAG BIG What was the first thing we did with our painting? You had to cover it with colors. Then what did you have to do? You had to paint it all black. In our story today, Elijah took his offering and placed it on the altar. Then he covered it with water several times. What we did in our craft reminds us of what Elijah did with his offering to God. We will finish our project tomorrow.

options, but they must be metal)

protect it, you can write the camper's names above the project before they arrive. This way you tell them where you want them to sit.

ru Have them use either a wood nail or a toothpick to draw. As they draw the colors will show up. Have the campers draw things that they love to listen to like music or birds, or whatever they enjoy. Campers will be excited to see the results of their art work.

ru 1. Tear off a piece of plastic wrap to cover the top

of the large bowl 2. Secure the plastic wrap over bowl. Make sure it

is very tight 3. Pour 1 teaspoon of uncooked rice on the top of

the plastic wrap 4. Hold the metal pan in the air and position it next

to the bowl 5. Take the metal spoon and bang on the metal

pan like a drum and watch what happens to the rice

DRAG BIG What did you think was going to happen to the rice? We could see sound. In our story today, God comes to Elijah in a whisper or silence. Elijah had to really listen to know when it was God.

DRAG BIG In our story today, what is Elijah doing? He has gone to talk to God. He is afraid and he wants God's help. But before he could talk to God he had to listen for God.
