Alexander Oil Colours Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Permanent Red, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Burnt Umber Ultramarine Blue (Monte Mart)

Materials Alexander 2 1/2" Blending Brush, Alexander 1" Foliage Brush, Alexander Script Liner Brush, Alexander Large Fan Brush, Alexander Original Palette Knife, Ordourless Paint Thinner, 20" x 24" Canvas, Disposable Palette, Easel

Step 1 Outine

Using a small filbert brush take some Burnt Sienna mixed with thinner until liquid consistency like ink. Map out rough outline of painting. Step 2 Sky

Use 2 1/2" Blending Brush and dip into thinner and then mix into Titanium White until reasonably liquid. Paint into the sky area. (Also paint into the water area) Now take Palette Knife and Ultramarine and mix with Titanium White. Sky should be graduated in colour from top towards horizons. Start in two top corner and use a criss cross action working in from corners to centre and down towards horizon. Allow colour to mix with white already on canvas. Clean the brush with paper towell. Then gently blend in sky colours to give even sky effect. Next get a little more Ultramarine Blue and darken corners to lead the eye into the picture. Step 3 Clouds Use Fan Brush and take some of the sky mixture and place in clouds using a swirling motion of the fan brush. Step 4 Water

Use 2 ? " Brush and using Ultramarine Blue start at the bottom of the water and work up towards the horizon allowing colour to mix with white already on canvas. Use horizontal strokes in water keeping it parallel with the bottom of the canvas. Cover the area where reflections will be to allow for reflections to be pulled down. Blend in using horizontal strokes

Step 5 Distant Mountains

Use 1" Brush take Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White with a tiny touch of Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sieanna mixing a light value. Paint in distant mountain range. Make the shapes and outlines of mountains as interesting as possible. Avoid predictable shapes. Step 6 Distant Island & Embankements

Using same mix as distant mountains darken it with more Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sienna. Paint in the island using 1" brush.

For the river embankement on left hand side darken the mix with more blue to give a blueish hue. Go darker again for the right hand side as it is closer to us. Paint in the overall shape. Paint the reflection in under the river embankement on the right hand side. Make it just a little bit lighter in value. Paint in also the left hand side reflection again slightly lighter in value.

Mix Ultramarine and Yellow Ochre and mix on palette with 1" brush. Add a tiny bit of Burnt Umber if it needs to be darkened. Dab in tree shapes on right hand side embankement. Repeat in the reflections area. Take same mixture and lighten it in value by adding Titanium White and follow same process on left hand side river embankement

Add a touch more blue and repeat process on the island
