KI BOIS Community Action Foundation, Inc. is a private, non-profit corporation organized to eliminate the causes of poverty and improve the quality of life for persons residing in Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, Pittsburg and Sequoyah counties in Southeastern Oklahoma. Several of KI BOIS Community Action programs have expanded service areas. KI BOIS Area Transit System KATS) serves Adair, Cherokee, Haskell, Hughes, Latimer, LeFlore, McIntosh, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Pittsburg, Sequoyah and Wagoner Counties. KI BOIS Community Care serves Adair, Atoka, Bryan, Cherokee, Choctaw, Coal, Haskell, Hughes, Latimer, LeFlore, Marshall, McCurtain, McIntosh, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pushmataha, Sequoyah, and Seminole Counties. For more than 40 years, countless numbers of lives have been touched through the many services offered by KI BOIS Community Action. KI BOIS Community Action is administered by a thirty member Board of Directors, an Executive Director/CEO, Associate Director/CFO, Associate Director/COO, Program Directors and Coordinators.

Covering 5,055 square miles, the total population of the five counties is 162,535 (2010 census) persons. Of this total, 32,114 are below poverty income guidelines. KI BOIS Community Action provides employment for over 950 people and has an annual payroll of over $20 million and a total budget of over $35 million dollars, making KI BOIS Community Action one of the largest employers in Southeastern Oklahoma.

The following are some of the programs and services offered by KI BOIS Community Action Foundation, Inc.

KI BOIS Community Action provides information and referrals to people interested in furthering their education. Staff provides guidance and counseling for school age children and adults. KI BOIS Community Action also assists them in obtaining scholarships and grants to use for their education. KI BOIS Community Action also has RSVP volunteers trained in Laubach to teach people how to read. If you need tutoring, call Marcia Mitchell, RSVP Director, in McAlester at (918) 423-3525 or (866) 213-4881. The Sheltered Workshop staff works with individuals, assisting them in learning to read, write and learn daily living skills through the use of computers. Head Start provides educational programs to parents and volunteers at Cluster Parent Meetings.

KI BOIS Head Start Program helps prepare pre-school children for the experience of school. The Head Start centers work to provide a variety of educational activities to help children grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically. They also receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting.

Head Start helps all children succeed. The children are involved in such activities as field trips, language development, music and science. Services are offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.

Families receive help they need to improve their quality of life. The parents play a key role in the Head Start center. They serve on Parent Committees and Policy Council and work as volunteers in the Head Start center.

To qualify for the Head Start Program, the child must be 3 or 4 years old. At least 90 % of the families must also meet Federal income guidelines. Families must provide proof of income, age, disability (if any), shot record and family size. TANF, foster or homeless children are automatically eligible. Children with significant disabilities are encouraged to apply.

FAMILY - means all persons living in the same household who are: (A) supported by the income of the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the child enrolling or participating in the program; and (B) related to the child by blood, marriage, or adoption;

GUARDIAN - means a person legally responsible for a child.

INCOME - includes total cash receipts before taxes from all sources. (Adjusted Gross Income, wages/salaries before deductions, net receipts from selfemployment after deductions for business).

KI BOIS Community Action partners with many public schools to provide pre-school programs for all 4-year-old children of the community. These partnerships allow for full-day services in most cases.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program is a federal food program that provides money for serving nutritious meals to children enrolled in licensed family day care homes.

This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered at the state level by the State Department of Education, who funds organizations like KI BOIS Community Action to administer the program at the local level.

The program benefits to enrolled homes are as follows: monthly checks to cover your food costs for feeding the children in your care, you will be reimbursed for the meals your own children eat if your income is less than 185% of the poverty level, you will receive training that will improve your skills and increase your knowledge of nutrition, food preparation, and record keeping, and each child in your home will receive nutritious, tasty meals.
