Old Hickory Home Tour Returns to Its Historic Roots

By Allison Baird

Historic Old Hickory Village Makes the News

By Allison Baird

The 2007 History Old Hickory Home and Garden Tour is set for Saturday, May 19th. This year's tour features five of the original ten styles of homes built by the DuPont company in 1918, including three Arlingtons, one Bay Tree, three Haskells, one Georgia and one Cumberland. This year's only contemporary home is a brand new "seaside colonial" with breathtaking views of Old Hickory Lake. Seven of the historic homes have recently been restored and updated with modern conveniences. One has even been chosen for and upcoming episode of A&E's program "Find an Design." Another, which was under construction for last year's tour is nearing completion and returns for the public to view. Although the floorplans on these homes may have all begun the same, they have all changed and taken on new lives over the years.

The Old Hickory Art Center also returns as a new tradition to the Historic Home Tour. The Art Center is open to Old Hickory residents daily. A couple times each year the center opens its doors and offers paintings by local artists who use the center for purchase. These works include water color, oil and acrylic, large and small of innumerable subjects. Proceeds from the sale will provide for supplies and other needs for the center. Many of the pieces available were recently featured on the popular NPT program Tennessee Crossroads.

If you recently saw a News 2 truck driving around the village don't worry. They were not here doing a story about someone getting in trouble, complaining or anything else you would usually see on the news. The Village was chosen as Jennifer Moran's Community of the Week. She liked it so much, she also chose one of our homes as The Home of the Week.

Jennifer is News 2's Real Estate Video Journalist and also has her own blog about communities and homes she visits.

Our stories were originally scheduled to air the week of April 24th, but were bumped because of severe weather in News 2's viewing area. However, a little birdie told me that we should be on Thursday and Friday May 3 and 4 on the 5 o'clock news, unless of course there is breaking news or bad weather.

In the event you miss it, HOHV plans to have a link to Jennifer's blog on our website at . You can read about other communities Jennifer has profiled on her blog .

Home and Yard of the Month

In addition to the homes, you may also take peek in to many classic cars that will be parked throughout the village. Local acoustic singer songwriters will provide entertainment and if you're hungry you can stop by the Mason's Lodge for its annual Fish Fry from 11-6.

Tickets for the Historic Old Hickory Home Tour are $12 and will be on sale at the Old Hickory Library at 1010 Jones Street from 10-4. The tour runs until 5pm. Proceeds from home tour fund a large portion of Historic Old Hickory Village's budget for the year.

Congratulations to our two Home and Yard of the Month Winners for April!

Old Hickory Village and Rayon City Clean up Their Act

If you noticed less brush and trash in Rayon City and Old Hickory Village, there's a reason. During a March and April residents of both communities with the help of juveniles needing to do some community service work teamed up to clean up their neighborhoods.

A cleanup was recently held at Rachel's Walk. Although weeding was done, this area is in need of some "regulars" to help keep it looking good. If you are interested, contact Terri Torre at 847-4410.

The next organized cleanup is scheduled for Saturday May 12th at 9am to get the Home Tour route looking good. Call 207- 0977 to sign up.

Neighbors in Lakewood began the year by creating a task force to beautify the city. Now they have a website to help bring neighbors and city commissioners together.

The goal of the task force is to "improve and complement the visual appearance of Old Hickory Boulevard", according to April Consulo the group's organizer. These improvements include upgrading businesses to make them more accessible for those with disabilities and new signs on both sides of Old Hickory Boulevard as you enter Lakewood. They also recently held a clean up day.

The new website address is and is chock full of information about Lakewood, its history and people. Surf on over there for more information, photos and upcoming events.

Veterans Memorial Park Seeks Donations

Mama's Cooking

By Susan Lamb

For many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer, the end of school or an extra day off of work. Although all of those thing may be true, the real reason behind Memorial Day is to memorialize military heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

A personal note from Susan--

Many of you may know that I lost my sister Joyce to a blessedly brief struggle with cancer. In the middle of that struggle, my family and I were repeatedly blessed by this community. At a time when the world's peace is divided by issues of politics and profit (and our neighbors are often divided by local versions of these same issues) it's good to remember that neighbors are valued. Kindness is a great gift and I am so grateful that God's amazing grace gave me the kindness of neighbors here in Old Hickory. I thank each of you for your part in that gift.
