DICTIONARY OF NORTH AMERICAN HYMNOLOGY

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICAN HYMNALS BY DENOMINATION

STONE / CAMPBELL MOVEMENT

A CAPPELLA CHURCHES OF CHRIST

While the terms “Church” or “Churches” are sometimes used in the material to refer to a cappella churches of the movement, most often a cappella churches prefer that they be referred to as “church of Christ’, with the lower case designation for the word “church.”

Certain publishers cited below have, at times been more interdenominational than specifically related to or fairly exclusively serving churches of Christ. This circumstance depended primarily on the change of ownership of the company. The circumstance related to the particular constituency of a company. While Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians would often use the same materials, churches of Christ were doctrinally distinctive from these groups. Hence, they pursued different musical texts in their worship.

Consequently, care has been given to the particular era in which a hymnal of these companies was published, and who served on that book’s editorial committee at the time. This is a difficult matter to sift through. Consequently, some worthy books may have been eliminated from the bibliography, and others may have been inappropriately listed. The following list has served as a guideline.

While 1906 is the official date of a separate listing of the churches of Christ in the United States Census of Churches, nevertheless some publications from earlier years are listed below since they clearly had church of Christ ties. The listing in 1906 simply made official in information from the U. S, government what had already been the case. Conversely, some publications from publishers and editors that later became exclusively affiliated with churches of Christ are listed in the document “Early”.

Central Music Company / Hartford Music Company

Both Central Music Company and Hartford Music Company were, in their earlier years, interdenominational music publishers. In 1926, Albert Brumley, of the churches of Christ, began work with Hartford Music Company. He also sang in an interdenominational quartet sponsored by the company.

In 1931 Central Music Company merged with Hartford, and Albert Brumley became a part of that enterprise. In 1943, Albert Brumley organized his own publishing firm, and in 1948 he purchased Hartford Music Company. Consequently, Hartford Music Company publications more specifically served the churches of Christ from 1948 onward.

Publications of Hartford Music Company from 1946 are listed in this bibliography. A few Hartford publications with earlier dates are listed if their editorial groups seemed to be exclusively or primarily people affiliated with churches of Christ. Numerous Hartford song books with earlier publication dates can be seen in the collection at Lincoln Christian University.

A. J. Showalter Company

More difficult to distinguish is the use by churches of Christ of hymnals published by the A. J. Showalter Company. A. J. Showalter was Presbyterian, and the editorial committees of hymnals published by the company had several denominational affiliations. Within their group, however, were editors related to the churches of Christ. ??

Great Songs of the Church

The hymnal Great Songs of the Church ranks as perhaps the most frequently and widely used hymnal of the Stone-Campbell Movement. I cite it here, because, while it has been used in congregations of all three sectors of the movement, it has most extensively been used in a cappella churches of Christ, in independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ (instrumental), and in some Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations.

It was published at various stages by E. O. Excell—an interdenominational music publisher, Word and Work Press, Christian Leader, Great Songs Press, Standard Publishing Company, and ACU (Abilene Christian University) Press. In most editions for use in a cappella churches of Christ, it was published in a shape note edition.

When it was published for churches in the other two sectors of the movement, it was published in round note editions. Two publications are the exception to this: a round note edition published by Great Songs Press, and a round note edition published in 1986 by ACU (Abilene Christian University) Press.

The hymnal is distinguished by being one of the few hymnals in the United States that is arranged alphabetically. It also distinguishes itself by being one of the few hymnals to include Hallelujah from Handel’s Messiah.

The ACU Press publication of this hymnal, edited by Forrest M. McCann & Jack Boyd, includes a more extensive selection of hymns than its predecessors. A William Rees Bryant dissertation on churches of Christ hymnody says, "There are Lutheran chorale tunes, traditional English hymn tunes, and plainsong tunes from the Sarum rite. There are tunes by Tallis, Palestrina, Weber, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven.  There are traditional hymns by Wesley, Watts, and Cowper. And there are gospel songs by Havergal, Gabriel, Bliss, Bradbury, and Stebbins.  There are even a few well-established contemporary songs by Gaither and Kaiser."  (William Rees Bryant. "The Contribution of Churches of Christ to Evangelical Hymnody,"  M.A. thesis, California State University, Northridge, 1992, p. 72-73)

In the view of this writer, the hymnal is one of the most noteworthy hymnological projects in the history of American hymnody.

The “church of Christ anthem”

One group of churches of Christ is non-institutional; they do not support para-church organizations (schools, orphans homes, nursing homes) from the church treasury. Abiding Hymns (1959) is a publication of this group.

Florida College in Tampa, FL, is related to non-institutional churches. A. W. Dicus, former Academic Dean at Florida College, wrote what has become known in some circles as the church of Christ anthem: "Our God, He is Alive." The hymn is known to many folks in churches of Christ as 728b—its number in Songs of the Church, published by Howard Publishing Company.

I am indebted to Don Meredith, Librarian at Harding University Graduate School of Theology, Memphis, TN, for sharing with me his knowledge of church of Christ hymn books, hymn writers, and composers of tunes. The entries that follow are made much more accurate because of his kind assistance.

In this movement, as in some other U. S. church groups, the term “protracted meeting” was used at one time to refer to a series of nightly meetings, evangelistic or revivalistic in nature, that seemed to have gathered additional momentum night by night, so that the series was extended, or “protracted” beyond the usual one or two week series of meetings. The “Protracted Meeting Song Book”, published in the a cappella church of Christ movement in 1934, bears the unique title that refers to such meetings.

Smaller groups from within the a cappella churches of Christ The a cappella churches of Christ entry for 1986, “Blessed Assurance,” and the 1994 publication “Holy Manna” are publications of the “one cup” brethren from among the larger group of a cappella churches of Christ. This group of churches distinguishes themselves by using only one cup for the entire congregation at communion. I believe they do not fellowship with other churches of Christ. Other ‘one-cup” publications also appear in the bibliography. In most cases they are so noted, and are publications of M. Lynwood Smith. Publications of Homer L. King, of this group, also are listed in the bibliography.

Another group within the churches of Christ is the non-institutional group. This group has produced several hymnals, including Abiding Hymns. The non-Institutional group does not support para-church organizations (e.g., schools, orphans homes, nursing homes) from the church treasury, although it has some ties with Florida College in Tampa, Florida. A. W. Dicus, former Academic Dean there, wrote what is known in some circles as the church of Christ Anthem: "Our God, He is Alive," known to many folks in churches of Christ as 728b. This is its number in Howard's Songs of the Church. I am indebted to Don E. Meredith, ibrarian at Harding University Graduate School of Theology for this information.

* No date is given on my copy. Enos Dowling, in his Hymn and Gospel Song Books of the Restoration Movement: A Preliminary Biography, (privately published) Lincoln, Illinois, 1975, acknowledges that the copy at Lincoln Christian University has no date, but indicates that the publication is from 1974. (jcw)

** Dowling’s Hymn and Gospel Song Books of the Restoration Movement: A Preliminary Bibliography lists this book, but does not show the location of a copy.

*** I am uncertain about the group to which this book belongs. I have placed it in the a cappella church of Christ group because it is a personal publication, and not a publication of Standard Publishing Company [independent Christian Churches / Churches of Christ, Christian Board of Publication / Bethany Press (Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)]. Its origins are more likely to be among a cappella churches of Christ because, while Gospel Advocate Company and a few other commercial publishers publish materials of the a cappella churches of Christ, more books are published privately within this group than within the other two groups. With privately published items, the location of the publication is sometimes a clue to its group also.
