Old Covenant vs. New Covenant ….Grace

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries

Session Outline: Hebrews Chapters 1-3 tell us that Jesus is superior to the angels…greater than Moses.

In the Old testament, God made covenants with Moses, Noah, Abraham, David. What was the condition attached to almost all these covenants? The Israelites had to obey or be cursed. The covenants required obeying the works of the law.

What is the condition or requirement of the New Covenant that God made with Jesus?

That all that believe in Him are under grace. Keeping the law cannot save us. Jesus wants us to be set free to a greater degree from the works of the law and enjoy the blessings of a grace-filled life.

Heb 8:6-13 But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.

7For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8But God found fault with the people and said£: “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

9It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. 10This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

11No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”£ 13By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

Eph 2:8-10 NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- {9} not by works, so that no one can boast. {10} For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jesus…”Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Mat 5:17

It is not by our power, but by His Spirit

(Heb 4:15-16 NIV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. {16} Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

How do works of the law differ from grace-filled power? Will the law cause fear, doubts, stress and manipulation of the circumstances? Would grace differ in that they would believe it is up to the power of the gospel to change the circumstances?

How would you define grace?

GRACE… Undeserved acceptance and love received from another, especially the characteristic attitude of God in providing salvation for sinners.

Grace: God’s gift of the ability to do what He has asked us to do.

Webster…a. the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.

b. the influence or spirit of God operating in humans to regenerate or strengthen them.

c. a virtue or excellence of divine origin.

d. Also called state of grace. …the condition of being in God's favor

Paul in Eph 3:7-8, I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power. {8} Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

Gal 5:16-23…So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, faction21and envy; drunkenness,

orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self–control. Against such things there is no law.

Gal 6:7-10 7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature£ will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

(1 Cor 12) Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. …. {11} All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. {12} The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. {13} For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

For Meditation: What are the differences in the old and new covenants. Would you define grace differently than what is outlined above?
