Trees

Trees are the largest plants on earth. In Ireland the largest tree is the oak. It is also the oldest. The tallest tree in the world is the sequoia which is found on the west coast of America. The sequoia is also the oldest living plant.

There are two types of tree:

A. Deciduous: These lose their leaves in autumn.

B. Evergreen (Deciduous): These trees are always covered with leaves.

Parts of a Tree

1. Roots: They hold the tree in the ground. They take in and store water from the soil and supply the tree with food.

2. Trunk: It supports the tree and carries food and water to the branches and leaves.

3. Bark: This is the outer part of the trunk. It protects the tree and keeps it dry.

4. Branches: They carry food and water to the leaves.

5. Leaves: They produce food which the branches and trunk carry back to the roots where it is stored.
