GM and CASIO TONES

GM and CASIO TONES

Playing midis with SMF player usually means using the General Midi voices. Is there a way I can reassign the tracks to play Casio's own voices? It seems I have to do it via a sequencer software, is that it?

I tried several different ways...and couldn't change a loaded midi file's instruments...when trying to re-save it. They revert back to the original settings. So, as far as I can tell...you need a computer based sequencer program...to change the instrument assignments. As I have mentioned before, you can 'Record' the 'Casio advanced tone' assignments...by pressing record on the Computer sequencer, then selecting the instrument (using the Casio number pad). The bank assignment is recorded in the 'event list' on the computer. Knowing the correct bank assignment...you can manually add that information to an existing midi file (loaded into the computer sequencer program)...and remove the existing assignment of the GM bank. You can really just change the number of the GM event ..to the Casio number...if the GM instrument selection is part of the event list (sometimes it is not set).

So how do I convert them, I have the software but it seems to need a midi connection, surely I can do it without connecting my keyboard to computer, I just want to convert files and put them on a smart card. Can you give me instructions on how to do it??

You can use the Casio Data Management software version 2.0 to convert them. Well I've already tried to convert .ckf to the .zoo for rhythm using this software without plug the MIDI cable from keyboard to PC.

All you have to do is put all files you have downloaded from casio music site in 'data' folder. (it came together with Casio Data Management application, after you install the software to your PC). Then you can load all that files with simply click the right arrow button to the smart card folder. The .ckf files will be automatically converted to .z0x files in your smart card or floppy disk.

The right side of the display, in the Casio software main screen...has 3 tabs.

1. The Casio...uses a midi cable (which ...if you get one, you will wonder how you ever got along without). The cable will allow 'live' adjustments to tones and effects, using the Casio software.

2. SmartMedia Card....can load the converted ckf files to the z0x format. I also saved the z0x files from the SmartMedia back to the computer (as z0x files). So, now I can load the SmartMedia card directly from the computer (and don't need to run them thru the Casio software).

3.Disk...for use with the 3500's...the same as SmartMedia.

You load any of the destinations ...using the Casio software (at a screen display level of at least 1024 x 768, so that the load arrows show up). You need to set your source (computer folder)...under the file/preference/directory. Loading directly to the Casio (using midi cables)...you push the blue circle arrows to refresh the Casio's contents, and the folder contents. I saved the various file types, on the computer, in separate folders...to look like the Casio online folder separations.
