Please know that we are here to support you and your child, especially in these unprecedented times. While the school is closed until further notice, instruction and learning will continue from home. Thank everyone in advance for your support, patience, flexibility, and understanding during this time, especially as we begin this new journey of virtual learning. This letter is designed to provide important information, but if there are additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to administration for additional answers or for clarification. What does virtual learning look like for my child?Schoology is the online platform being used in order to deliver instruction and classroom assignments for students. Teachers will be posting assignments to Schoology on a weekly basis and students/parents can communicate with their teachers through this platform, as well. Many teachers will utilize the Schoology Conference feature or Microsoft Teams to provide opportunities for LIVE interaction during the week. Some lessons may be pre-recorded using Zoom. Should your child have any questions about assigned work, his/her first point of contact should be the teacher. While Schoology does allow for two-way communication, many teachers utilize Class Dojo, Remind, or Bloomz as a tool. Email is always another available option. How will my child turn in his/her work?Assignments will be turned in through Schoology. Teachers have three virtual learning conferences each week on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Tuesday and Friday are dedicated for virtual office hours. If you have any questions, use these scheduled times as opportunities to ask for clarification. Make sure to submit assignments in a timely manner. What if my child is having technical difficulties or has trouble logging in to a particular program? If there are technical difficulties with Schoology or with district issued technology, first read through the advice or instructions the classroom teacher may have provided in the Schoology site. If the problem is still not resolved, then call the ZenDesk at 915-230-2601. Make sure to describe in detail the nature of the problem. What if my child doesn’t have access to instructional technology or the internet?Last week, teachers contacted each student’s parent/guardian and asked them questions related to technology. If the provided response was there wasn’t any technology equipment in the household, a scheduled time was provided for an iPad to be picked up from the campus. At this time, the district has ceased further iPad distribution until further notice. The district is currently working on creating instructional packets that will be sent via mail to each student’s home for additional support. For homes that do not currently have internet access, Spectrum is offering two months of free service in order to support the continuation of students’ education. We will problem solve to find solutions for families who do not have internet/computer access. How do I contact the school if I have questions or need to speak with a teacher/staff member? All school staff will check and respond to e-mail Monday through Friday during the work day, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Please allow up to 24 “business day” hours for a response. Our school website has all of our staff’s e-mail addresses. Reach out to them as needed. Classroom teachers also utilize classroom communication apps as well. How will we stay informed during the closure?Utilize the wide variety of online resources and social media sites to stay informed about school and district news during this closure:Check emails regularly.Visit the Tippin Elementary Facebook page.Visit the district website on a regular basis: the Tippin Elementary school website: Norms for Successful Virtual LearningStay organized and manage your time carefully. You can easily become overwhelmed without effective organizational and time-management skills.Establish a regular, uninterrupted work time each day to complete assignments.Attend scheduled virtual learning conferences Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. It is recommended to log in to scheduled conferences approximately 5 minutes early. If unable to attend, review the recorded conferences posted by the classroom teacher.During the scheduled conferences, find a place in your home that will limit distractions, including: other siblings, pets, toys, or other electronics. While in the meeting, refrain from distracting others including: changing the virtual background during the lesson, or making faces/gestures at other classmates. While not in school physically, this is your assigned class time. Please make sure to be sitting up straight and engaged, not lying down on the sofa or in bed. Your teachers have worked hard in preparing lessons so that you can be academically successful. When in a virtual conference, use your first and last name as the screen name and not a nickname. Make sure to also enable the camera on your device so that you can be seen by your teacher. Contact your teachers from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, when you have questions regarding assignments. Stay Sharp! In order to reduce the impact of the “learning slide” from a prolonged period away from face-to-face school, don’t forget the following beyond your class work:Read (for pleasure and for class). Utilize I-station, MyOn, or other provided resources.Visit other websites provided as resources from your teacher and take advantage of the instruction they have to offer, including Norms for Successful Virtual LearningVisit with your child as it offers resources on digital safety and online etiquette. Assist your child with logging in to Schoology, or other assigned applications, if unable to do so independently. Ensure your child is in a home area that limits distractions. Please be aware the camera will be on during these conferences. There have been instances where inappropriate clothing has been unknowingly shown by adults to students participating in the conference.Allow your child to attend virtually scheduled conferences independently as if they were still in the physical classroom. Assist only when needed. If you have specific questions for the teacher, please ask these questions during scheduled virtual office hours. The virtual learning conferences are reserved for student instruction so they benefit from the instruction provided. Read all documentation sent to you by the teacher and campus. The documentation includes important information including: schedules, expectations, resources, and troubleshooting suggestions for technology/websites. A recommended daily schedule has been attached that was created by the district. Its purpose is to offer suggestions for establishing daily structure for students during the virtual learning school week. Be mindful of the time when communication is being sent to teachers. If emails/texts are being sent after 4:00 p.m., a response may not be provided until the following day as teachers will be spending time with their families and no longer on duty. Teachers will post grades within one week after the due date of an assignment. If your child’s classmate has a grade for a particular assignment earlier, please be patient and know that your child will also receive his/her grade in a timely manner.Be patient. We are embarking on virtual learning together and there will be obstacles along the way with technology. Please know teachers are working tirelessly to ensure your child receives quality instruction and the goal continues to be their educational success. We look forward to when we can return to campus with our Tippin Community. Until then, please remember we are here to support you and look forward to our partnership together in making virtual learning a success.
