CONNECTICUT PROGRAMS OF STUDY IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

This companion document to Connecticut Career Pathways in Behavioral Health provides summary information on the behavioral health programs in thirtyfour Connecticut colleges and universities. The information provided includes the academic certificates or degrees conferred, data on the number of students completing the programs during the 2007-2008 Academic Year, hyperlinks to the programs, and relevant licensure and certification information.

The college and university information in this document was obtained by:

? Identifying Connecticut two- and four-year colleges and universities offering behavioral health-related undergraduate and/or graduate programs of study; ? Creating a Microsoft Access database to track programs of study and study areas of concentration within academic majors; ? Contacting college and university offices of institutional research, academic deans, and program coordinators to verify programs of study and study areas of

concentration information; and ? Utilizing the U.S. Department of Education Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) to obtain completion data for Academic Year 2007-

2008 using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP Codes). Not all educational institutions reported CIP coding the same way, leading in some instances to apparent discrepancies between program information maintained at institutions and CIP code completion reports. Recognizing these inevitable variations, we have attempted to present information as accurately as possible. We appreciate the input and feedback from Connecticut higher education institutions as well as the Department of Higher Education.

Some additional relevant points are listed below:

? Specific information is included for each University of Connecticut campus; completion data are not included for each campus; ? In some instances, program completions are inclusive of sub-programs or areas of concentration. ? Since program and completion data are based on Academic 2007-2008, there are undoubtedly additional more recent programs that are not included in this

document and we recognize that some programs may have been inadvertently omitted; ? Minimal information is included regarding online programs; future listings will benefit from additional online program and completions data; ? Connecticut Programs of Study in Behavioral Health includes information on Master's level and above nursing programs; undergraduate nursing program

information is not included. While some Master's level nurses work in the behavioral health field, the great majority of nurses are not employed in behavioral health occupations. The information in Connecticut Programs of Study in Behavioral Health can be used by prospective students to learn about the availability of behavioral health-related educational programs at colleges and universities throughout Connecticut. Educational institutions can use the information to identify similar programs offered by other institutions to explore possible articulation agreements or other cooperative relationships. Behavioral health employers can utilize the information to explore possible sources for student interns, recruit program graduates as potential employees, and identify faculty members who could assist in agency education and training endeavors.

DEFINING BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AND ITS WORKFORCE

A basic definition for the behavioral health field includes the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery of persons with mental health and/or substance use conditions.

The behavioral health workforce is comprised of numerous occupations. Some occupations are essentially "exclusive" to the behavioral health field, while others are "non-exclusive," meaning that persons in this occupation may work in behavioral health or other health or social service fields. We recognize that other occupations not included in this report, for example speech therapy, also have some involvement in behavioral health.

The Connecticut Career Pathways in Behavioral Health Project focused on sixteen occupations as defined primarily by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook:

Occupations Exclusive to Behavioral Health

Occupations Non-Exclusive to Behavioral Health:

Drug and Alcohol Recovery Counselor Marriage and Family Therapist Mental Health Counselor Psychiatrist Psychologist Recovery Support Specialist/Peer Delivered Services School Psychologist

Art Therapist Occupational Therapist Public Health Professional Recreation Therapist Registered Nurse (including Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) Rehabilitation Counselor (including Psychiatric Rehabilitation) School Counselor Social and Human Service Assistant Social Worker
