Appointments through Zoom and phone calls are set up by request any time after 5:30 pm. Please note that students who withdraw from lecture or lab will be withdrawn from the appropriate co-requisite course unless discussed and approved by the department chair or dean.REQUIRED MATERIALS:Below are attire and behaviors that are expected in our laboratory classes:Biology 1 Laboratory Manual (Provided online – Listed by week)Read thoroughly the activity BEFORE coming to classCheck your supply list prior to your lab date.Please be aware you will need to purchase the other materials needed for lab activitiesComposition or spiral notebook to serve as your lab notebook Lab coat for every classClosed toe shoes for every classLong hair must be tiedNo eating or drinking in the lab (no food or drinks should be in your work space at home)Webcam or Laptop with a cameraGRADING:60% lab exams15% pre-lab quizzes15% lab reports10% lab etiquette (See 3 -7 above)Grading scale:A= 90-100%???????? ? F= <59.5%LAB EXAMS: There will be three lab exams on Honorlock, which require some form of webcam, during the semester covering the materials and skills we have been working with in the lab.?Do not miss these exams. Make up of these exams will ONLY be given to students with valid, documented excuses with written approval ahead of the exam date and time by me. The make-up of the exam may be in an essay or test format. NOTE: Exam dates BEFORE booking plane tickets.Honorlock requirements: A quiet room at a desk or table (flexible), no outside participants, minimal pictures on the wall, 360° scan of the room including the floor, no outside webpages or technology maybe used except a calculator, and you are allowed to have blank paper and a pencil on your desk. A required practice quiz will be sent out on week 3 for each student to test Honorlock on their computers at home. QUIZZES: There will be a short weekly quiz given before each lab. Each quiz will consist of approximately 10-15 questions in varying formats.?Approximately 80% of the questions will relate to the PREVIOUS lab: vocabulary, chemicals to know (where applicable), and activities. The other 20% of the questions will be based on the INTRODUCTION section of the lab you will be in that day. Each quiz will take about the first 15 minutes of lab and there are NO MAKEUPS!?The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.?If you miss the quiz, your grade for that quiz will be zero. The lowest grade of your quizzes will be dropped before I calculate your final grade.LAB REPORTS: For several labs, some form of hand-in assignment will be required.?These will be graded for content, format, neatness, and correct spelling.?Unless otherwise noted, lab reports are due the week after it is assigned. If you miss a lab or do not submit a lab report your lab grade for that class or report will be a zero. LAB ETIQUETTE: This part of your grade assesses your ability to consistently demonstrate proper laboratory behavior. You will be graded based on attendance, promptness, teamwork, preparation (lab notebook), appropriate dressing, video etiquette (when to have your camera or mic on and off), and how you safely follow procedures. You should be on camera during your Breakout Groups. At some point during the Live Lab Session you will be asked to join a Zoom Breakout Room to show or send a picture of your lab notebook to the professor to prove you read the chapter and are ready to work. This activity will be graded weekly, through either the Gradebook, Dropbox, or a Live Breakout Session. You can earn up to 4 points each class: 1 point for attendance, 1 point for the notebook, 1 point for being appropriately dressed for lab (closed shoes, lab coat and long hair tied), and 1 point for appropriate behavior throughout the class. If you miss a class, you can get up to 1 point if you email me (via MyCourses) beforehand letting me know. A full point will only be given for appropriately written emails.?This grade will be posted at the end of month.All Live Online Lab Sessions for BSC2010L -770 with be recorded on Zoom so you can play them back if you need to review a section, are running late, or were absent that day (See attendance policy below). ATTENDANCE POLICY:Attendance is required to complete the laboratory assignments and therefore mandatory. Expect to be on line for the entire class time. If you miss a class, you are responsible for making up the material.?Your attendance will be used to determine active participation in the course, so it is very important to attend class even in the Live Online format!?I’ll be checking off attendance in Zoom and Zoom Reports. To qualify as an excused absence, you must have a valid, written document that can be verified. If you do not contact your instructor within 48 hours of your absence, then the absence will be considered UNEXCUSED.?Two late entries are counted as one absence.Students who have 3 unexcused absences OR less than 70% of completed assignments by the voluntary withdrawal deadline, will be recorded as non-participating and will be administratively withdrawn by the college and receive a WF. If this is your third attempt (or greater) in this course and you violate the attendance policy at any time you will be assigned an “F.”EXPECTATIONS:What I expect from YOU:Be on time for class and do not leave until you are done with all activities.Turn off all electronic devices (cell phones, iPads, wireless/bluetooth earbuds – except for class use, etc.) BEFORE class starts. I don’t expect you to mute your mic, but please be aware sound carries.Prepare for each class by reading the chapter and transferring important information to your lab notebook BEFORE coming to class.Read ALL procedures again before starting any activity.Appropriate behavior that will be conducive to a healthy learning environment.Do your best to succeed in this course!What you can expect from ME:Be on e well prepared to teach each class.Check MyCourses at least once per day and my email throughout the day.Grade fairly.Be available to you so I can help you succeed in this course! You can come to see me after class or we can set up a time via email to meet at another time.
