As I said in my previous letter, it is not reasonable for us, at primary school level, to expect the children to be working for 6 hours of the day, as they would do in school. Please remember in school, lessons generally last 45 minutes to an hour, with the majority of it being where the children are taught something new by the teacher. At present, this part of the lesson is not being carried out. However, the teachers have all been working hard to set the children tasks that they feel are appropriate for them. This was a decision taken by the school, as we know that many of you – like I am – are trying to juggle your own work, keeping the children busy and setting them up with their work. The last thing we felt that you would need, would be to also teach the children any new skills they may need to complete the tasks given. Therefore, if the children have finished their daily tasks, please avoid getting them to do any more of the set work. Use this time for the children to: Relax, watch a film, read a book – and maybe complete a book report for it tooSet them on a treasure hunt in the housePlay board gamesTeach them new card games – solitaire/patience or as I mentioned before learn some life skills – make their bed, use the washing machine load and empty it too (this has gone down a treat in my house). Tidy their room – have a tidy room competition if you want to. Please remember, the children may also start feeling stressed, their routines have been put all out of sync, not just without school and not seeing their familiar faces there, but think about the people they may usually see during the week – extended family members, friends, sports/club coaches – they will start to miss these too. For any changes in our children’s attitudes we need to be supportive of them and also make sure they know that they are safe and feel loved. When it comes to the work the children have been set, I have been very impressed with the amount of work that I have seen completed on Studyladder. The children are obviously working hard at it. We will also be introducing Google Classroom from April 20th 2020. This will be our main online platform for assigning work for the children to carry out. As you know, this will be the first time that we have attempted this and the teachers are not experts (just yet) – and yes we are predicting some teething problems, so we are asking you to please be patient during this time. For now, we would like the children to try and log into their Google Classrooms, using their regular school USO and the ending @staugustinesrc.lbhf.sch.uk, and see if they can gain access into their correct classroom. We have uploaded work for the children to attempt over the Easter Break. It would be great for us if you could give this a try and also upload it back to the class teacher – this will then prepare us for the work we send out after Easter holidays. As a backup to this, you will also receive a parent mail from Miss Morris – setting the same work. Please note that Monday 6th April to Friday 17th April is officially the school Easter holidays. During this time, I will not be expecting the teachers to be providing daily work for the pupils in the school. Even though we are not in school at this moment, I know that the staff are still working exceptionally hard and they deserve the two week break that they would usually receive, if we were not in the current situation. Some teachers may add things to their google classroom, but this will be different for different classes. If you have any issues with your child not knowing either their username or their password, can you please contact the school on: info@staugustinesrc.lbhf.sch.uk. Please do not send Google Classroom queries to the usual school office address.Once again, I thank you for your ongoing support in this very difficult time.Kind regards,Mr. M.
