Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus Mrs. Hawkins

Classroom Policies & Procedures jhawkins@ sumpeoplegetit.

Welcome to Trig/Pre-Calc!

Materials:

• Paper, pencil, calculator, and a folder or binder for notes/assignments

• We do not have a class textbook we use regularly

Content:

• Basic trig functions, inverse trig functions, solving and graphing trig functions, angular motion, laws of sines and cosines, functions, quadratics, polynomials, rationals, logarithms, conic sections, matrices, vectors, limits

Grading:

This is considered an honors course and will be graded accordingly. Grades will be assigned according to the total amount of points earned. Students and parents should either check RenWeb for grade information or contact me. Grades will be updated weekly.

• Bell Work: a short task will be assigned at the beginning of each class period. The task is intended to introduce, review, or master material. 0, 1 or 2 points are awarded daily. You must complete this task during the first five minutes of class to receive points. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up this task without interrupting class time and show me.

• Practice: assignments will be given throughout each unit. It is your responsibility to work on these as they are assigned. Some will be in-class activities due by the end of the hour, and some will be homework assignments from the unit packet or worksheets. Progress checks (0, 1, or 2 points per check) will take place periodically throughout the unit, as well. In general, the homework questions are worth approximately 30-40 points per unit. Homework packets are officially due on the last day of the unit. Late work will result in a deduction of points for procrastination. Solutions (and sometimes “how to” hints) will be posted online to use as a resource. Practice questions can be corrected up until the due date for full credit.

• Gateways (Trig): Throughout trigonometry, students will be required to pass 4 different gateway quizzes with a 90% or above in order to pass the class. There are unlimited retakes of these quizzes.

• Mini Quizzes (Pre-Calc): Typically, 2-4 short quizzes per unit will be given during the bell work time. Each quiz is worth 8 or so points, and students are challenged to score at least 7/8. Quiz retakes are required at the conclusion of each unit if a 7/8 has not been achieved. The higher of either score will be recorded.

• Exams: one exam is given at the end of each unit. Each exam will be worth more than the practice questions. Late exams are given only if: A) you have an excused absence on a scheduled exam day, or B) at the teacher’s discretion. Late exams are not given if you miss a review day. There are often two review days, as well as online solutions to the review questions to accommodate such absences. Make up tests will be taken upon return, either during class or study hall, after school, or over lunch. Unexcused absences on exam days will affect the exam score (half credit). I do allow supervised corrections on tests for half credit back within a week of completion of the test.

• Final Exam: a comprehensive final exam will be given at the conclusion of each semester. This exam will be similar in structure to the unit exams.

Policies/Procedures:

• Instruction: Depending on the day, instruction will consist of some or all of the following: bell work, notes, lecture, activities, group work, practice problems, question/answer, projects, or assessments.

• Dismissal: I expect you to work until the end of the period. Some days there will be closing activities that you will complete and hand to me as you exit. Stay seated until the bell rings.

• School Rules: All student handbook rules apply.

• Food/Drink: Food and drinks are allowed in the classroom as long as you clean up after yourself, do not cause distractions, and make it to class on time.

• Cell Phones/Music: Cell phones, iPods, etc. are not allowed during class time unless permission is given by me. At the beginning of class, students will put their devices in the caddy at the front of the classroom. This is how I will take attendance. Typically, I allow students to listen to music if they ask during work time, so long as it doesn’t interfere with classroom activities. Students who cannot respectfully comply with these requests will be asked to put their phone (or other device) on my desk. I reserve the right to suspend these privileges if they’re abused.

.

• Tardy Policy: All students are expected to be in the classroom when the bell rings. Warnings will be given, but once a student has 5 tardies, consequences ensue. Any tardy after this will be made up through detentions or extra duty.

• Attendance: If you know in advance that you will be absent, you should ask for the assignments prior to your absence (or use your student schedule or the website). Also read the exam absence policy.

• Late Work: Work turned in AFTER the conclusion of the unit will be worth less. The later it is, the less it will be worth.

• Extra Credit: At times extra points can be earned, either as part of a special task or as part of an exam.

• Additional Help: Please see me if you need to schedule a time to come in for extra help. I am available before or after school, during plan time, or over lunch.

Tips for SUCCESS in this Class:

• Take Notes: A note packet is given each unit. This always contains the essential material and would make a good study aide for the unit quizzes/exams—and FANTASTIC study aides for the semester finals. Save!

• Retake: If there is an opportunity to retake or redo anything, do so. Consider it an opportunity to work on areas of weakness. Addressing such areas will help you prepare for the exams, as well as earn points back.

• Stay Caught Up: Even when the homework is not “due until exam day,” do what is recommended on the schedule. This will ensure that you are prepared for class and not letting things pile up.

• Ask: EVERYONE will have questions at some point. ASK!! Come in for help any time. You’d be surprised how much we can clear up in five minutes!

• Be a Team Player: Expect to work with everyone in the class at some point. Contribute as much as you can as often as you can.

• Stay Busy: Work from bell to bell, utilizing the time with peers and teacher resources.

• Be Your Best: Challenge yourself when opportunities arise.

• Growth: Adopt a growth-based mindset!
